Monza (and if Spa had been dry in all probability) showed they are still nowhere near the Merc PU in pure grunt. But yeah, what the fuck Renault and Ferrari have been playing at I'll never understand. Especially Renault, at least Ferrari have the whole 'we were caught cheating and had to start again' thing as a vague way to handwave their appalling progress.

Especially Renault, at least Ferrari have the whole 'we were caught cheating and had to start again' thing as a vague way to handwave their appalling progress. Why do you say they are 'nowhere near'? I though they were now in a very similar ball park overall and possibly even ahead in certain aspects (Bahrain the Hondas weren't derating at the end of the long straights where the Merc's were, as one example). Not disputing the fact that the Merc cars were the quicker overall package at Monza (and probably would have been dry Spa), but I had read that was more due to those tracks being slightly better suited to the low rake concept than high rake. At Monza, Red Bull were apparently faster at the start/finish trap but slower at the end of straight trap, which suggests they have good basic acceleration and grunt but were carrying more drag. Gary Anderson wrote an article about it with photos of their comparative rear wing angles.

Nowhere near was probably a bit strong. But it's not a coincidence that all of Mercs strongest tracks so far this season have had fairly large straights to take advantage of. We only have to look at McLaren to see just what a beast that engine of theirs is, they've been consistently at the sharp end in low downforce trim and consistently up there on the speed traps.
It's closer but the Honda still seems to be regarded as second favourite on the power circuits. Will also be interesting to see just how reliable it is in the closing races as that's a bit of an unknown too. But the work they have done has been quite astonishing and it's a very good job the engine will stay in F1 without Honda.

Having seen the forecast, F2 times could set the grid. Surprised we haven't seen people going for a time more, just in case.

I'm possibly missing something here, but does the BBC's live sport feed on their site drive anyone else mad?
For example, right now it says "Verstappen to start at back of grid" which begs the obvious question "Why?"
So you click on the "Live" article and you're presented with a news feed and a grey summary box to the left. However there's no mention of why Verstappen's starting from the back.
You then have to dig through the pages of the news feed trying to find any associated information... I eventually found someone mention in a fucking linked Tweet that "New PU confirmed for Max Verstappen - he will start from the back of the grid". I then had to further research what PU meant (power unit).
Does anyone see anything wrong with this picture? They either need to give more detailed summaries in the grey box, or have an additional tab with a more detailed summary.

I assume it’s just based on the understanding that most of the people who read the f1 reporting are f1 fans.
So seeing Verstappen is starting from the back of the grid you will know a) he had a 3 place penalty from the last race b) he has used us alloyed 3 engines (pu’s) and c) be aware that he would need to take a 4th at some point. So you know what has happened at a glance.
I agree they could do more but, most people worn even notice.

Predictable move from RB there. Got to take your penalties all at once. Especially if it's going to be wet.
If it's another Spa they'll have played a blinder.

Will they? They'll get zero points if it's just laps under the safety car.

That thought crossed my mind as well (after reading that qualification is expected to be super-wet). I imagine (hope) RB took a very good look at the weather forecast before reaching this decision

Not that the FIA will want a repeat of that, no matter the weather.

Not that the FIA will want a repeat of that, no matter the weather. Yeah, could you imagine though. Verstappen + 5 because of the decision at spa and technically Verstappen + 12.5 if they don’t do the same in Sochi

I'd have thought half points at best and a free engine change (without even having to put miles on it) would be something they'd tear your arm off for.

I don’t what’s possessed me but I just Randomly started watching the 1995 season on YouTube. Australia and Argentina were highlight shows but the entire imola race is uploaded. YouTube is a gold mine for entire f1 races. Just typing in random races from random years and they’re there. It was the 1994/5 seasons I first Remember watching F1 (would have been 9/10) so thought I start rewatching some seasons from there. Bit of a damp race but some cars have been lapped several times by halfway. There isn’t really much of a midfield. Williams and Benetton are so far ahead of everyone though Ferrari got some pace during this race. There’s some great camera angles being used. Got a over the shoulder view and you can see how much the drivers have to work to keep it pointing forward and also a nose cam which is not sadly used these much these days. Anyway schumi bins it at the top of the circuit and I still cheered like it was a live race day 😂
Also the Williams FW17 is a great looking car.

Over two seconds quicker than Ricciardo. Different track different conditions, but he must secretly be a bit gutted about Monza.

And George P3 totally deserved. Showed some real balls going to slicks first.

That was very entertaining. Awesome from Norris and richly deserved after Spa. Like Belgium he was always a second in front of Riccardo and ended up 2 full seconds ahead.
Terrible mistake from Lewis, ironically similar to Norris yesterday but of course less forgivable.
Toto claims they still wouldn't have time for two laps. Will be interesting to see if there's actually truth in that. The maths won't lie.

Haha, I'm so glad the rain didn't kill that.
What else can you say about Russell? It's just exceptional. If he tightens up his racecraft with a bit more experience he's going to be very hard to beat.

His engine went kaput and they had to put his first engine back in the car. Not taking away from Norris though, he has really shown his skill this season. P3 for Russell too how does he keep doing this 🤣🤣

I'm sure the engine could make a few tenths difference but it's the same sizeable gap we saw at Spa except on a shorter lap. Lando is just in a different stratosphere in the wet.
