It's fancy dress too. I was going to go with 2 mates and they'd be morticia and gomez, and I was going to be lurch. But then we got the gig, but I still might dress up as lurch and just go on stage like that. Fuck it, why not.
I'll have to see if I can record it somehow.
Shit. We've only got 3 weeks to get our shit together! I've just been playing like a madman practicing already!

Ha, if lurch played an instrument, it would totally be the bass.

I wouldn't picture Herman playing anything other than a P Bass as well. Got to watch his big feet with any pedals though.

That's pretty stylish quaddy. How will you share that with the world, if you get what I mean?

I setup a soundcloud account and linked it to a FB business page we setup which is the band itself (just search for s.w.i.m and it should come up - it's a purple-ish logo called SwimTheMusic), and the synth woman doing the marketing and graphics will share it via soundcloud, facebook, spotify etc, and also we send the graphics via email to various places for promo banners and posters. That's about it really, but I'm sure the synth player will have other ideas. She'll probably put it all over instagram too. She's quite good at knowing people in the business, so it's a pretty good bonus. She's come up with some really good artwork for it all too, including single/album covers, fonts, styles, the lot really. Home grown gfx/promotor/marketing staff

Nice, hopefully you'll get a good crowd.
My fledgling band is still going - we've found a drummer (and he's Scottish too, oh the irony, sorry wunty) - but the lead guitarist is long-term sick with something (not sure what, I only hear through the singer) and doesn't know when he'll be back. So now we're just one guitar and a bass (and drums!), with a load of songs that have two guitars on. So I've bought some (more) pedals to try to fill in a bit of what's missing - an octaver, delay and reverb for some intro stuff. (It's a scary rabbit hole, this pedal thing.) All good fun though, and I'm improving loads which I guess is the main thing.

Sounds ace. It's great when you just get a few of you together and start experimenting isn't it. It just opens it all up.
Haha, I know what you mean about pedals! Dangerous indeed!

This is a fucking outrage. Give him back!!!
That's brilliant though monks, sounds like you're really settling in. Yes, the pedal rabbithole is real and terrifying.
Quad sorry I missed that promo, that's great. Handy having someone on tap to do all the graphic side of things!

I kind of already know that I'll eventually circle back around to no pedals at all, because bass just sounds better clean most of the time - but I'll have a bit of fun messing around with them in the meantime. I got most of them second hand too so I should be able to shift them on without much of a loss if I want to.

I have that electro harmonix bass clone chorus pedal too - it's quite funky.
I know what you mean about going back to clean though - 9 out of 10 songs I play it's just the compressor. I have that on 24/7 though.
There's one song where I have a bit of fuzz, and another song with fuzz, phase shifter and chorus but every thing else is normally just standard compressor.
Depends on the song and the style really I guess. An envelope filter pedal on minimal settings can give a song some additional slight funk if you get it just right. But that would probably only fit a few of our tracks. Hm, maybe a fair few, thinking about it

Actually I think the Bass Clone will probably be the first I sell. I don't need chorus much anyway, and the TC Flashback delay (which is ace) does a pretty decent chorus via the Toneprints.

Yeah, I don't use mine that much if I'm honest. If it was a funk band though, it'd be an entirely different story

I had that TC flashback, it's great.
I've since sold all my pedals but have bought a couple for the guitar since. To be honest I don't think I can be arsed with pedals much these days.

I think I've definitely got what I need to cover what I do. Can't think of anything else I'd need pedal wise.

Blimey, that's a lot of pedals, maybe I should get some pedals, what's a compressor do? I've been mixing up Bass Buzz with the sight reading course I got from Talking Bass a while ago. I managed to play a couple of the level 1 sample pieces tonight, it took me a while to work out the tempos but a bit of counting in my head and suddenly my brain just locked in with the drums of the backing track and I was away. Really satisfying

Well I'm still very much learning myself, but fundamentally a compressor lifts the quiet parts and brings down the louder parts, to make your playing more even. It's usually pretty subtle though otherwise it sounds a bit robotic. But it can do loads of other (all fairly subtle!) things like give you more sustain, soften the initial attack if you're playing with a pick, err...
I also have mine on all the time, but there's a little part of me that wonders if I actually need it.

You'll notice it immediately in the mix when you've recorded something if it's off

Maybe I should focus on getting my fingers to go where they're supposed to before I start getting distracted by buying more stuff. Stupid fingers.

I'm always wary about a compressor as I always think it takes a bit too much feeling out of the playing. I suppose recording it's a must but live I like shit to flow a bit more naturally.

Definitely. I have it on "very light". I'm a bit of a klutz sometimes when I'm playing, so it does tend to help me out more. Full compression sounds crap though, yeah. I like it just so it doesn't spike too loud when my fingers fuck up

Do you know what? It's not even drummers we can't get now. There's no fucking rehearsal rooms open or available any more.
Somebody is trying to tell me something.

Nah we were trying to arrange it but there's basically two studios. one we don't particularly want to go back to ever since we fell out with the guy who runs it years back, plus it's a shithole. The other one he only does block bookings, the ad-hoc night he offers has times that don't suit.
Sometimes it feels like I live in fucking space. I'd probably have more luck in Orkney as it happens, it's got a pretty vibrant music scene.
