This talk of JC and sandbox fighting reminds me how much I enjoyed the original Crackdown. Nothing better than standing high on a busy stretch of the freeway and sparking off an almighty battle.

I only ever played the sequel, which was just an icon collectathon.

They were all a bit shit, good idea with middling execution.

It most certainly wasn't. User score of 7.2 on metacritic would suggest it's middling

I’d argue that’s good, but not great.
I never gave the first one a chance. I just know the sequel, which reused the same city from the first, had no meat on it whatsoever ever. In terms of content and actual things to do. It was a strangely hollow experience.

I'm going to say Minit is done with, over and done with. I enjoyed it at the start but can't memorise the routes quickly enough before dying and dying and dying.

Crysis 3 (EA/PC Game Pass)
I was intending to start with the original game but it didn't want to work and I couldn't be bothered trying to fix it.
Anyway the suit allows you to camo and be stealthy but enemies seem to be able to see bodies through walls rendering it pretty pointless. All the while you have a Danny Dyer sound alike in your ear telling you how shit you are at being stealthy. This is before we question why such an advanced piece of technology has a battery life all of 20 seconds.
Still a good looking game though but I couldn't be bothered with it.

Signalis (XBS via GP)
I’m a funny old soul with horror games. I want the horror and the scares but I don’t want the dread. By that I mean if I take a horror down I want it to stay down. Especially when the combat mechanics in horror games are limited in accuracy and efficiency to ramp up the pressure.
But in my case I find this games combat mechanic more frustrating than horrifying. I want to feel like I’m fighting the enemies and environment rather than fighting the control scheme.
To be fair as an indie game I can see this is a very good game. Great atmosphere, setting, pixel graphics, sound… even the combat mechanics are good. But sadly for me it’s not great. I find as soon as there is more than 1 enemy in a room and they are relatively quick skill and accuracy in taking them down goes out the window and it’s just a run or battle to the death (often literally) outcome! Perhaps if there was a method with a targeted headshot or leg shot to slow the enemy down etc. rather than constantly resulting in a panic decision I’d like it more.
In any case 1.5hrs in and I’m dropping it. Far too much else to play and just the life to live!

Is it meant to be like the old Resi 1, where it’s easier to avoid enemies rather than down them?

Yeah, its more avoid and shooting is last resort if lots of them. iirc flares can perm. kill enemies
PC version has cheats if they helps anyone, used for the hard playthrough

Fucking loved Signalis. I think I ran past 75% of the enemies in the game...

Maybe I’m playing it in the wrong style then but running past enemies at every opportunity does not make for fun gaming imo… I can live with running past enemies with obvious opportunities but not trying to run around almost all of them! It’s not horror Sonic 😜

It’s not horror Sonic 😜 you don't have to run past all, on easy there is enough ammo to kill some of the enemies
the game is very much old school survival horror (which has been watered down after companies turned the games into all out shooters)

It’s not horror Sonic 😜 I was being a dick and exaggerating tbh. It definitely helps to get in the RE mindset though. Kill enemies on critical and well travelled paths unless you can safely get by them. Leave ones in places that aren't a threat etc.

It brings back the ammo conservation from early RE and Silent Hill that's been missing a fair bit lately.
I much prefer the RE4/Dead Space style but because there's been such a dearth of the above it felt like a breath of fresh air - you have to think which rooms/corridors to use your ammo on, usually the ones you visit often.
Wish I'd played it after they increased the inventory slots though - that bit felt a little too limited.
Edit - or what wunty said 10 minutes ago

Damn. Might be time for a new playthrough...

All the talk about Signalis reminds me that I've left it unfinished somewhere in the middle (I think) and it will be leaving GP at the end of the month, so unless I want to be left hanging I got to brace myself and finish it...

Don't think ammo conservation has ever really been a issue in Silent Hill, especially with the inclusion of melee weapons. You can find a tonne of pistol ammo if you look around the town a bit in the first game Games are still terrifying
REmake 2 on Hardcore requires some thoughtful use of munitions

I'd never thought I'd say this as botw is one of my favourites of all time but tears of the kingdom.
I just hate all the new mechanics and it's almost constant. Every shrine I just roll my eyes at the next thing I need to do. Both the wind? and fire temple just pissed me off and nothing new added is good. I just prefer everything about botw.
Think I've done 30 shrines, two temples, 20 seeds, maybe a bit under half the map towers done and have zero interest to play again.
Tried one last time yesterday on a flight and just was so bored I turned it off and watched some of the in flight entertainment.
Sad.

Ridge Racer 2 (PS5)
Loved Ridge Racer back in the day and I remember really enjoying this back on the PSP but after about half an hour I just kept on trying to internally justify continuing when I knows there's loads of other stuff to play.
Basically, I need to retire early so I can have more free time.

Remnant 2After trying yet again to embrace this genre of game I realise it is not/never meant to be. I do not enjoy the "loop" and after failing the Labyrinth boss several times even in various 3 stacks I uninstalled. Have not got the patience and/or skill and what is more I don't care! Back to games that are FUN

That's a shame - I just did the very same boss last night after 6-7 tries and had a blast.
I think the big appeal for me though is playing with two mates - it's just fairly mindless fun with a bit more substance than similar games like Outriders.

Oh man, Outlanders felt so rough. All the hallmarks of a 360 era AA game but with none of the charm.

Took me a ton of goes but I honestly enjoyed it as well. I've been dipping in and out of this game and I'm not sure why, as it's quite an improvement on the first one, which I liked. Just keep getting distracted. I'm currently on some massive artificial planet inhabited by a dead civilastion orbiting a supermassive black hole. Which is very cool.
