Finished Sekiro last night - took just over 50 hours! Had one of those runs where everything just 'clicks' against the final boss, and ended up not using a single resurrection (although the healing gourd was nearly empty!). Got the Immortal Severance ending. Started NG+ and I'm absolutely racing through the early game. Beat Genichiro (when you're supposed to lose and get you arm chopped off), beat the guy on the horse, and the blazing bull already. I definitely feel overpowered now, but also a lot better at the game than when I first started. I want to see the other endings especially the boss fights I've missed in the second memory I think overall I enjoyed the combat more than DS or Bloodborne, but preferred those fantasy worlds to feudal Japan

How long did it take you to defeat the last boss? Yeah I noticed that when you head back in you make progress remarkably quickly. I guess it helps if you've seen all the locations already too, as I'm terrible for just taking in the environments when I first play these games and pootle about checking every nook and cranny 🙂.

I played for a couple of hours on Saturday learning attack patterns and making progress (by the end of that session was pretty much always getting to 2nd phase, sometimes to 3rd). Then on Sunday played for about 45 mins (5-6 goes, almost always making it to the final phase), so definitely a long one! It can be quite soul destroying when you practice an early phase enough to make it through only to get absolutely wrecked by the next phase with different attack patterns Yeah I'm the same with exploring - like to try and find everything in one playthough! Got all the gourd seeds and 38/40 prayer beads on my first playthrough (the two I'm missing are apparently in the second memory which I missed ), but feel like I saw most of the game

Managed to beat Genichiro for the first time earlier today. It wasn't a clean or elegant fight, but now I can finally move on with the rest of the game - at least until Elden Ring is released Kept my cool during his first deathblow, trying to read his moves and respond accordingly. During the second deathblow, I did panic (as always) when I used my resurrection, but thankfully a couple of double ichimonji's did the trick. During the third phase, the only thing I timed correctly was that initial mikiri counter; everything else was badly timed / wrongly executed, almost lost it when I used my final resurrection and I beat him when I managed to corner him with another couple of double ichimonji's and some firecrackers. I'm none the wiser about how to play the game, get constantly in a panic shape and have no confidence whatsoever that I'll manage to actually finish it, but at least I can reach a bit further

I think confidence is really important in Sekiro. The worst that can happen is you die and retry. Just go all in

Funny how overcoming a stumbling block such as Genichiro can affect your progress in this game. After failing on Genichiro for months and months on end, in just two weeks time I've managed to beat the Folding Screen Monkeys, two Snake Eyes dudes, O'rin and the Corrupted Monk, upgraded a bunch of prosthetics / learned a bunch of arts (this game does have grinding spots after all) and I'm about to face the Guardian Ape - which does look scary, I have to admit, but doable

Have fun with the ape. Pack plenty of emblems for firecrackers and take oil for your flame vent. He'll go down like a sack of shit.

Defeating Genichiro is honestly the biggest 'A-Ha!' moment in any FROM game for me.
After that, everything just clicked into place after hours of struggling.

Although with this new gauntlet thing, my son informs me that if you can't kill Inner Genichiro then you've got no right to call yourself proficient at the game.
Needless to say he can kill him, but I can't.

alcachofa Did not get a chance to try the guardian ape yet, however there are a lot of valid tactics against him... Apart from wunty's advice above, you may check FightinCowboy's Git Gud guide below (he sure helped me with Genichiro):

The Guardian Ape is finally down \o/ Took my sweet time with him as he was constantly wrecking me and I had to farm for spirit emblems at some point, since I burned through all my stored ones on him. Finally, I had to trust my gut instinct and spent the 2nd phase deflecting his sword attacks and mortal draw his red arse every chance I got, because mortal draw was the only tactic that could reliably get me through his 1st phase and would work without emblems...
Dread to think I must face him again along with his girlfriend soon, but c'est la vie...

Aye the second encounter is actually not too bad. Just keep moving and don't get caught by GA whilst you take out his mrs. She's got a small health pool in comparison so will go down fast.

After completing elden ring and then getting about half way through it again with another character I dropped it haven't had any urge to go back. However I'm way more tempted to start my god knows what play through of this. Eighth maybe? No idea but I'm thinking time for another play through! Slightly tempted to do some stupid no death run. I think my last completion was sub ten deaths.

I started my first! A few (what? Eight??? Xbox timer must be bugged) hours and I’m about as far in as the blindfolded guy after 10min. Also a lot more than 10 deaths! At drunk guy and general tenzen - I think I know how to do both now, just need to execute.

Thanks! Tenzen is dead, it felt pretty easy when I finally killed him, where it felt really daunting before. I loved that little snake and how it spazzed out. I got one pip off horse guy second try - I think he might be doable!
