The G29 turned up yesterday and I think it's working fine. There was a bit of setting up with Assetto Corsa & Content Manager (creating a LUT file to import) but it seems to work well enough. It's hard to tell really without any direct comparison. I have a feeling I'll probably be tinkering with settings for some time to come.
Flat Out 2 works fine with it with the degrees of rotation reduced in G hub which is great for some knockabout fun. Not a fan of G Hub though. Sometimes it gets stuck "connecting" to the wheel it knows is there and sometimes goes full black window. Seems quite flaky. Are there any better 3rd party apps to do this job?
Next ones will be Dreamcast games in redream. Looking forward to Ferrari Challenge, Daytona and some Sega Rally 2 if it works.

So I just did an F4 race at Donnington where the 1 car started at the back (p15 I think). He was p6 by end of lap 1, p2 by end of lap 2, and leading by end of lap 3. There weren't any significant crashes or incidents that promoted him up the order. I watched his onboard replay, it was honestly like watching Senna there in 1993. Braking later, turning in more aggressively (somehow initiating controllable oversteer rather than the understeer I get if I turn in too hard) carrying more speed through the apex, mm perfect lines, patient but assertive racecraft. He was doing mid 1:26s and no one else could get below a mid 1:27. This was a top split, fixed setup race! Genius basically. I was so impressed I looked him up. Pepe Marti, 3rd in Spanish F4 last year and fast-tracked to F3 with Campos this year! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pepe_Mart%C3%AD

Yeah it's ridiculous isn't it. Going on voice chat I would have guessed he was in his 30s.
GTR was released before he was born!

Had my worst ever race just now. Knockhill in the F4. Got disqualified for too many incident points. A 4x and off track that weren't my fault (got rear ended while avoiding an accident) and then I contrived to spin at the chicane 5x! After the first two spins I thought my rear wing must be damaged so I pitted, only to come out and spin three more times. Pretty embarrassing.
Went straight back to a practice session to figure out what happened as I've honestly never been more confused by simracing. Prior to that first spin at the chicane I must have done about 40laps without more than a slight offtrack so I wasn't exactly unprepared. Even considered whether my wheel calibration had suddenly changed.
It turned out that by being more conservative through the chicane, taking less curb and going slower I was just unsettling the car more. Every spin made me more conservative and further reduced rear grip. As soon as I went back to attacking the chicane at speed and leaping over the curbs, problem solved. No idea if this is realistic or one of those iRacing things. Certainly not had this experience anywhere else before but relieved to belatedly figure it out.
Anyway -0.73 safety rating for the DQ. Ouch.

I'm losing safety rating this season as well, also irating to go with it.
Gonna switch to fixed set up f4 next season after it appeared a few weeks after the open setup championship.

So looking at getting into sim racing. However money and space is an issue.
I was looking at the G29 as a beginner wheel. For a seat I am also looking at playseat challenger.
Anything else I should be looking at?

What's it on? PC or console?
Not much else to do on a console with a G29 apart from upgrade away from it to a Thrustmaster or direct drive.
If PC then vr and triples, custom shifters and upgraded pedals on a USB of its own are all possible paths to think about.
Personally I'd not do what I did and buy the Logitech, a Thrustmaster would let you upgrade a little before ditching the wheel base completely.

It's for the PlayStation so I should use the term "sim racing" lightly haha

A Thrustmaster would let you attach new pedals with load cell and a nice shifter, costs a little more so if you think you'll be in it for the long term maybe go that option.

My logitech G920 on my pc is great but the original pedals had to be cleaned out every few weeks, I modded them to fix that problem and improve sensitivity but they can now never work on my xbox.
I eventually bought the thrustmaster load cell pedals as they have a USB for pc and they only work on consoles when plugged directly into a Thrustmaster wheelbase, also I welded them to my frame so they not moving soon.

Possibly a little beneath the fine patrons of this thread - but can anyone recommend a decent Xbox compat controller with the extra funky paddles, to use as a gear changer on racing games? I’d love a wheel/pedals setup, but until the small human grows up and strikes out on her own the playroom is hers. Have heard Elite series are nice but break too easily, someone else recommended Scuff…any thoughts?

Ah thats good to know thanks. What thrustmaster should I be looking at? The temptation of the f1 style wheel add on is there aswell. Bit of a rabbit hole..I would defo be in for the long haul but we're living in a renovation house so all the money is going to that at the moment and I would have to swap it out in the living room till I get a permanent space.

Still mulling this over haha. I am tempted by the thrustmaster. Belt driven etc however I am thinking for the price difference to go for the logitech and then just bypass the midrange and get a fanatec if I get the bug

Solved and bought! Excited!
Went for a second hand T300 GT, get the better pedal deck and picked it up for a really good price second hand. Just hope it's OK when it turns up but was worth a punt for the better wheel.
For my stand (couldn't go seat really due to space) got the GT Omega Apex. Its reduced on the site at the moment. Supposed to be much sturdier than the original one and I don't mind the extra weight. Theory being that when we get the space I have the option to add a rear frame and seat to it.
Very excited

Nice, lots of people sell as they upgrade so hopefully a perfect wheel for you.
I'll upgrade myself after I get my motorbike license sorted this summer.

New Radical coming to iRacing. That's very tempting - big fan of the old one, so hopefully, it'll be similar but with the improved tyre model, damage system and offline AI.
Haven't really enjoyed the Touring Cars as much as I expected this season and pretty much abandoned it a few weeks back. I find the comparatively poor iRacing FFB makes FWD cars hard to find the limit with. I can be competitve with practice, but it's largely through trial and error and memorising the limit rather than dedveloping a feeling for the grip. Just don't find it very satisfying, especially compared to the Raceroom FWD cars which you can push hard and race more closely with.
Really just been racing the F4s of late, and am still loving those. Have also found only racing in D class as a B class makes it very hard to maintain SC (you get more heavily penalised for incident points and a reduced reward for clean races to boot). Not that it really matters (unless the new Radical is a B) but I'll likely get relegated to C for next season unless I make the effort to do some higher-tier races soon.
Think it'll be the F4 Fixed and new Radical series for me (sensible track list permitting).

Murderous car, always one lapse of concentration away from death Hope it's a free replacement, though I doubt it. Fun to drive, a rapid thing Added Touring Cars to my Skippies this season, not exactly got to grips with TC's yet to say the least. Had a couple of F4 races and I really like the car, but the driving standards are on a par with F3, some absolute idiots driving in both series

I'm still relatively new to iRacing. What series has good driving standards? Aside from rookies I've found every series relatively similar thus far.
On a vaguely related note I was in an F4 race the other day where some Aussie guy had bad lag and was also braking hard and exceptionally early which inevitably resulted in him getting rear ended by someone. His excuse was that he was very new. I looked him up and he had indeed joined only five weeks before but had somehow run over 100 races. I've only done 80 or so in a year! So maybe I'm still a rookie myself.

Whenever I venture out of Skippies (not often), into any of the Formula cars, it shocks me how bad people are. Skippies have been cannibalised as far as participation, first it was the Vee and then F4. It does have the benefit of leaving us with a core of about 60 odd drivers in race splits for Skips that generally drive fairly and in my experience at least, less maniacal than iR04 and F3. I get what you mean with the Aussie guy, I get the feeling some eat their meals in there rigs and never leave them all day, except to pick up their dole money

Unless I'm mistaken we can't try the SR10 on the test server? Bit of a downer that, might wait to at least read some reviews before buying.
Did just try the F3 (good fun and fairly natural coming from F4), Aston GT4 (Slow and boring - just really don't understand the appeal of GT4), F 488 Evo (surprisingly fun given I don't generally like GT3 due to TC and ABS) and the Lotus 49 (brilliant fun but the series appears totally dead, plus it's still weird racing a 60s car on modern track layouts).
Bit tempted by F3 fixed and to a lesser degree Ferrari fixed now, but their reputations for being crash fests worries me a bit - I don't get time to run more than a few races a week and if I get wiped out early in them it really stings as often that's me done for the night. For those of us that don't like GT3 racing, is there a series people would recommend for being reasonably populated and that has a decent reputation? FWIW I do have the Skippy, but find the F4 more fun (and own more of those tracks).

Test server is always the previous patch.
After getting into the game during covid I find I can't spend enough time to learn a new car to any sort of level as I did with the skippy, sunk down 500 irating to 1600 this season after doing skippy and f4, 2 races a week that's all I'm putting in so learning anything else seems pointless until the colder months and I'm more willing to sit for hours a week on it again.

Did try Ferrari fixed for a season, wasn't too bad for driving standards actually, although I was way off the pace and happy to pootle around at the back, dunno how they are so fast. Though I have the old problem of earning most of my IR in Formulas/Skips then being chucked into 1st/2nd splits in totally different beasts to drive.
Don't get what people see in GT generally, after coming from Formula cars they are like driving a boat.
I will be running Skips, Touring cars, maybe new Radi, and possibly IR04, if I can stand it.
There is IR to be earned in F3/IR04 if you can somehow navigate the carnage of the first two laps
Season 2 was up and down for me, struggled early on, down to 2020 IR at the lowest, then got it back and more with Skips at Zandy/Nords/ Brands, ended up at 2460 IR, waaaaaay too high for my limited skills.

Thanks chaps, makes sense regarding the test server being the old version now I think about it!
My IR hit 2200 at one point in the F4 and I often felt a bit out of my depth. Then I had a disconnect and my Knockhill shenanigans and dropped right down to 1600 or so. Now back to something like 1900. To be honest I don't really care what my iRating is, I just want to race against others of a genuinely similar level.
For F4 at least I find split 2 more fun than top split. Split 2s generally pretty close, I'm usually on the pace and my placing is mostly dependent on pace and racecraft. A podium is possible on a good day. Top split I find I'm typically over a second a lap off the ultimate pace (4-8 guys with iratings north of 3000 tend to just disappear at the front). I sometimes pick up decent results just by not crashing when they do, which is almost annoying as it then leads to more top split racing.
Not really sure what iRacing could do to fix this, I guess it's just needs greater participation because the pace gulf between 2000ish and 3000+ is large and only a handful of really quick guys race D class series so a few average drivers like me have to make up the numbers.

Most of my love for the first AC is to do with modding on pc so I'd guess ACC, that's only GT cars but does have a good online system.
