Does anyone use a tv screen as a monitor?
I have 2 fairly old 27” screens and I’d like to move to a single screen. I was looking at various ultrawides, including the 49” Samsungs as that’d basically just replicate what I have now without the middle border, and the OLED model looks nice, but the gf has a 32” and I really like the height of it. Everytime I see it it makes the 27” format look really skinny.
The Samsung 57” is ridiculously priced, so I’m contemplating just going for a 42 or 48” LG OLED.Would be excellent for gaming, but perhaps it’s too tall for productivity stuff?

I’m using my 55” I just upgraded from. It’s nice, but yeah, can feel a bit tall for general use. I imagine it should be fine if you can raise your desk chair a bit. Mine’s lever was faulty when I built it so it’s at the lowest setting. But yeah, 48, 49” might be a better use case.

If you've got the room, 4K at 48" is the same pixel density as a 24" 1080p monitor so it should be fine at 100% if you can get the space to work. 42" is closer to a 27 inch 1440p monitor so that should be fine too.
It might be worth looking at a 38 inch ultrawide too if it's just for productivity; it's basically 4K width but cut down to 1600 height. The only problem is that the variety of panels isn't fantastic; LG do some decent IPS screens but they're not OLED, obviously.
And yeah, I just got a 32" Alienware OLED to go with my 34" ultrawide and I'm honestly thinking of just going with two 32s as it's such a nice size.

Brother's been using an LG 48" CX OLED as a monitor for about 2 years now, no complaints.
He's wall mounted it behind a very deep desk to buy himself as much room as possible mind you. Bit overwhelming sat on it's stand on a standard size desk if you ask me.

I too got the 48” CX a while back, for games I wouldn’t want anything else, although I haven’t checked out the new OLED monitors that have come out. Back when I got it the gaming monitors were just super expensive, had much worse HDR but reached higher refresh rates. But realistically, at 4K, 120fps has been more than fine. In terms of doing something productive on it, I end up using only part of the screen for that, but honestly anything longer gets typed on the macbook. I’d probably go for the 42” model now, it wasn’t available when I got this one.

Yeah, it's definitely between the 42" or an ultrawide.
I really like the idea of just using a TV for the gaming side but I do need to work from home and I can't shake that the ultrawide would just be a better all-rounder.
It'll be a couple of months before I pony up so I've got some time to think.

If I was you I’d find a shop that has the 42” and ask if I can hook up my laptop. Screens are expensive and last a long time, it’s worth finding something you really like.

Can't comment on using a TV, but I've been pleasantly surprised at how good ultrawide is for productivity. They sell them on games and immersion, but I use one for work most days and it is really good. I certainly prefer my ultrawide 1440p to two 1080p screens (although two 16:9 1440p might be better).

Movies too. You’d think it shouldn’t matter if you see black bars or a bezel, but it does look better on an ultrawide.

I love my ultrawide, but hate how hit and miss games have been with it. Really thought things would improve with time, instead it feels like they got worse. UE4 games in particular often deal with ultrawide resolutions by simply cutting the top and bottom of the picture, which kinda defeats the whole point.

I'll be staying with ultrawide for my next monitor, definitely move up to 1440p but might consider an OLED if the price fits.
Main use is Flight Sim and it does feel so much better with a little extra width.

Why is installing a CPU cooler such a pain in the arse?
Think maybe in the future, we could have a CPU card? Kind of like a graphics card, where it comes integrated with a cooler and you just have to slot it in?
I'm getting there, just have a few steps more to go, but everything was going so well until the CPU cooler step came up.

Well the air cooler, ram and m.2 drives are much easier to install when the motherboard isn’t in the system yet. This is probably very useful information at this stage of the build process.

Even though admittedly it would be kind of cool.

Early Pentium 3s had slot versions too. It let Intel make sure they had good CPU and cache because they had a lot of problems with the Pentium Pro yields where a single problem with either meant they had to sling the whole thing.

It would look cool, but you’d need a 1700 pin connector these days.

Incidentally, that frankenstein design also meant the cache was connected to the CPU at half speed, so a similarly clocked (usually overclocked) Celeron with on-die cache would likely be faster despite being a lot cheaper.
Mind, the Celeron was still on a slot, because compatibility.

I had such an issue and a screwdriver slipped and hit something when installing cpu. Didnt break anything so thats good. I hate those little case cables the most though

Yeah I went with credit. So I went with a Intel I7 12700k (12th gen), which was about £150 cheaper than a 7800X3d and outperforms it in real world scenarios. The motherboard gone for is decent, and it supports 14th gen Intel as well meaning that there is an upgrade path there. Went with 32gb DDR5 6000mhz Ram. All in spend was around £520. CPU is coming from the US so won't arrive until March 7th, but it was a saving of £70. I think I have everything for a new build, I'll let you know how it goes. So everything's together. Haven't had a chance to try anything out yet, but everything is stable, cpu temps are hovering around 30 at idle, so quite pleased. It almost killed me. Looking forward to trying it out properly.

I recently mentioned Portal RTX, seems like it just got an update:
Release Notes: Added NVIDIA DLSS 3.5 with Ray Reconstruction Added NVIDIA RTX IO support Update dxvk-remix to 0.4 Added POM materials Fixed content issues Optimized CPU perf New “secret” cubes Numerous bug fixes and overall improvements to stability
Going to try it later today.

I played it just a couple of days ago. I was a bit surprised to see so many Steam reviews complaining about it being a buggy mess and/or running terribly, because I had no issues at all. 60fps without turning DLSS on and no bugs or glitches that I noticed. Maybe the patch fixed a lot of things. I was tidying up the Cupboard of Crap I Can't Be Bothered to Throw Away the other day and realised I have enough stuff to put together a second PC, I'd just have to buy a PSU. I'd be a pretty crappy PC (for new games at least) and I have no idea what I'd actually use it for, but I'm still tempted for some reason. Might ask friends/relatives if anyone needs a free computer. edit: Hello new page, added quote.

Yeah, all I need is a case and a fan and I've got the makings of another machine.
I'm quite tempted to go for a SFF case with a new motherboard to upgrade my current machine, then get rid of the old stuff in one go. Although I guess I'd still have an extra motherboard then...
