I've been trying to give away my free copy of Half Life 2 on steam for like a decade.... Good that they are allowing this, but it does sound like they just don't want to do it themselves and are washing their hands of it. Amazingly, I don't think I have ever actually played the original Unreal or only played it briefly. I understand a lot of other developers not having the time to keep supporting ancient games, but you'd think Epic would have the resources to spare 1-2 devs for the small amount of time it'd take to support it. But if not, I guess this is the best way.
I wish more developers would do it.
I played Unreal for the first time a few years back. (In high res, with a few fixes etc..).
The basic shooting etc.. is good (in that retro style), but a lot of the levels are confusing labyrinthine messes, which was kinda annoying.
I finished it though, so it was still decent enough.
For anyone into the recent trend for retro shooters, it's probably worth playing the original.
PS/ Talking of old games, the Castlevania Collection is free on Epic this week. Plus something else they already gave away that I forget.

Half Life 2 free on steam till Monday store.steampowered.com/app/220/HalfLife_2/Must be someone that hasn't got it... I've got it and never played the pc version but waiting on the RTX update to finally play it after all these years of not having a PC that could run it properly I'd also recommend HL2 VR for anyone who wants to play it again with a twist. Not quite as good as Alyx but surprisingly effective.

I think the comparison with what Valve have just done is a good one. HL2 is a little newer than Unreal, but I think one dev releasing updated commentaries, bundling expansions, etc. all for free contrasts quite a bit with another developer saying "yeah, whatever" with a shrug to their old game being available on an archive site. Epic have always felt like they wanted to ignore their past and sometimes even dissociate themselves from it. It has been that way since they had big success with Gears of War.

Tbf I don't think many people from the old days of Epic are still there other than the most notable Tim Sweeney who went from a mute individual to a cringe, old techbro who very clearly has been trying to create the cult of image character akin to Gabe Newell which has failed repeatedly plus the whole cult of personality around Newell is also incredibly cringe.

Do it. I got a Steam Deck recently so will give it a spin on there. Hopefully I won’t get stuck in the canals.
