I wrote a blog post once about how ludicrously unforgiving EQ was by modern standards. No in-game map, just artists’ impressions of the main towns. I rolled a Ranger and started in Surefall Glade, which wasn’t mentioned at all. No bank there, either. Where’s Qeynos, I asked people? It’s on the other side of Qeynos Hills. Which is a level 4-8 zone. Just keep going South. Except you don’t know which way South is. There is no compass. Sense Heading needs to be trained like any other skill, and your cap at 1st level is 25… You've just brought back loads of memories. I remember having to setup the hot keys and sense heading was the first one I had to start levelling up so I could work out where the fuck I was going. I rolled a high elf cleric to start with, called vinylblair. In the end I think I got him to about level 38. High elves start in felwithe. Which is a forest with the village shops high up in the trees. Crushbone was the first area with a boss - commander djinn. He was a right bastard  then in the other direction was mistmoore Castle where I stumbled onto at level 3 or so. Yeah, that didn't last long. But yeah, it was so unforgiving but at the time, apart from meridian 59, that's all that was out there. And can you remember desperately trying to get your body back after a death? Because if you lost it, you lost everything on it. Permanently. Total bastard! Wow, sense heading. That's really taken me back Believe it or I still try and learn the piano to kelethin theme, which is the starting location for elves. Still haven't nailed it. Lovely music though. Today is going to be a nostalgia day! Sorry to whoever it was, but I’m in a nostalgia groove now. The best thing about EQ was that it was so harsh, there was a real sense of exploration when you went into a new zone. No map (I downloaded loads from EQ Atlas). Real danger - you had no idea what you might run into, and then have to retrieve your corpse somehow. No other game has ever felt quite the same. |

Struggling to give a fuck about this anymore. I'm in the Duke's Archives and it's just so tedious. Go up the stairs, bash this guy, kill that archer, bash the wizard, repeat 10 times, die to an arrow in the head from an archer I forgot about.
If anything playing this has probably taken the sheen off Elden Ring a bit. There's a really surprising amount of crossover in the environments. That first time you get air lifted into Anor Londo is basically like the first time you walk out and look across the golden city in ER. Duke's is basically Lucaria Academy. Etc. Granted, ER is far superior and improves on a lot of things, but playing this makes me understand the iterative nature.
It's also given a new level of respect for Sekiro. They really did try something different there. Think I'd kill for Sekiro sequel tbh. Even though it made me absolutely rage.

It's a commonly held belief that the game falls off after Anor Londo Oh It's mostly gradual and not too bad until you get to a specific later area where it kind of falls off a cliff The area in question being the Demon Ruins/Lost Izalith. Big empty spaces with recycled enemies, lava and/or the Bounding Demons that look like the bottom half of some other enemy somewhere, very few NPCs or side things to check, Bed of Chaos... |

One of the issues is that the little crystal men are damage sponges so you can’t just overpower the area However once you reach the bonfire inside the archives it does become enjoyable again Try and find out what they are weak to so you can kill then in one hit |

Ooooooh. So. Futurepress are floating the idea of reprinting one (or more) of their previously printed and now out-of-print books. Dark Souls Trilogy Compendium has been floated as a very serious contender. I'm really fucking hoping that's the one they choose (although it's up against Control (need) Sekiro (got) and both Bloodborne books (have)). Considering it's a nightmare to get hold of now (EBay and shit has it for nearly a grand, which is just fucking stupid), and it's the one I most kick myself for missing (was going to put an order in and had to spend that £35 on something else that week so thought I'd wait, d'oh).
So yeah. That would be fucking super duper. I would even forgive them for having THE WRONG SHIELD DATA in their Elden Ring book. Almost.
Of course, if they choose Bloodborne and Old Hunters it will devalue my own copies but it's not like I'd ever sell them.

I'd seriously vouch for the Trilogy Compendium, as I'm still kicking myself about it.
Had two preorders placed, one on Amazon.com and one on Amazon UK. Come release date I checked the exchange rates for both USD and GBP and saw that it was a bit (and I cannot emphasise the "bit" part enough) cheaper to get it from the US, so I cancelled the UK preorder. Amazon.com sends the order via UPS instead of regular mail, who in their infinite wisdom decides to ask me about 100€ (or maybe more, I'm not sure) extra to deal with the customs clearance - that's only on UPS, there was no extra charge from customs itself. I refused the extra charge and told them to return it, but by that time Amazon UK had no copies available (apart maybe from some German copies)...
