Bad Religion & UK Subs at The Marble Factory in Bristol, 8/6/22
Fucking hell, that was an absolute banger of a set from BR. All classics. Wasn't expecting them to do Kerosene. Never been to the Marble Factory before either, it's a decent place with an industrial vibe. Most genuine enjoyment I've had from anything in six months.
UK Subs were in damn fine form too. Charlie has got one hell of a set of lungs on him for a man of 78.
---
Wish I'd known beforehand that the hotel I booked, literally up the road from there, had massive construction work going on right next door that started up at 8 in the fucking morning today though.
EDIT:

Alice Cooper earlier this week was absolutely fabulous! Way better than my expectations, especially considering the arena usually has pretty shit sound. First big-ish gig I've been to in years.

Not even a fan of Alice Cooper but easily one of the best gigs I've been to. Crazy fun show. How old is he now?

I saw Billie Eilish in London last night. What a wholesome young role model she is. Excellent high production value arena style gig. I won’t forget this one for a long while.

Going to deftones Monday, o2 Kentish town, London. Cant wait Ah nice, I saw that but was too late to get tickets. Saw them a few years ago at the Shepherds Bush Empire, was a brilliant gig. They smash it in smaller venues.

Back from the Killers at Old Trafford cricket ground last night. The most mainstream gig I've ever attended for sure. These are faves of my other half but I've always thought they have some very good tunes despite not being a massive fan myself.
A high stress gig for me because we took our daughter and her cousin (11 and 12) and I was perpetually thinking about keeping eyes on them instead of the gig. Still, they loved it and were making up dance routines over Caution and stuff which was lovely.
They put on a very impressive show and the perpetually smiling/power posing Brandon Flowers is very, very charismatic up front.
The sound was beyond bad. Massively overpowering drums, the kick drum in particular. This doesn't help at a venue like this which is so affected by wind and reverb. The song 'In the Car, Outside' from their new album took me two thirds of the song to recognise.
When it worked they were a big, jubilant experience and I can see why they are filling these places.
Regards his pitching as has been mentioned above, he certainly does dance around being in tune but mostly pulls it off IMO, I think it's a consequence of relying on yelping to constantly hit high high notes. I compare his singing style at times to that Bobcat character off Police Academy.

Just seen Parquet Courts. Really excellent, both the bands playing and the sound quality.
Support was an up and coming band called Fat Dog and the sound quality wasn’t great but they had an interesting sound and were hilarious with the singer walking amongst the crowd like they were big time and the keyboardist dressed as a sexy nun but looked more like something from American Horror Story.

Went to Parquet Courts last week at Brixton Academy and they were excellent. For me they are up there as one of the very best bands going at the moment, and their playing is always exceptional.
Unfortunately, the sound at BA really wasn't great. I love the venue for the stage size/height and the slopped floor making it a lot easier for smaller people to see, but the sound really doesn't do it justice.
Was right down the front for Warmduscher supporting. They were great as always (think that was 14th time seeing them in 3 years) but the sound from there was garbage. Moved back to middway for Parquet Courts set and it improved a bit, but nothing compared to how they sounded last time I saw them.

That is a shame, but I've similar feelings about Brixton Academy as you.
For the Albert Hall last night I think it is the best sounding gig I've seen and as you say, those boys really know how to play their instruments.

I think short of Squid they are the best live act going for tightness, Protomartyr come close but what they do is a lot simpler

Parquet Courts at Leeds Uni. Knackered now. My knees can't take it anymore!
Excellent set, plenty of new stuff with some of their better known stuff in the mix. Again, thought sound mix was only average but maybe down to our our position in the back corner.
Could have done with BA's sloped floor though. I was OK but my better half was struggling to see much.
As ever, some twattish crowd chit chat spoilt a couple of the slower moments. Not expecting silence from the crowd but it fucks me off when people are backs to the stage and shouting at each other like maniacs when they could be in Wetherspoons doing it.
Didn't catch much of the support (Fat Dog) but the Siouxsie-like front woman was enjoying it.

Pond - manchester academy 2 10/10 what a show from the ex tame impala guys. Nicolas allbrook is the greatest frontman around at the moment. They also played a lot of their older Psychedelic rock stuff mixed in with the newer dancier stuff. Still the best current band around and made remember why I love live music so much after that god awful smile gig a few weeks ago.

Being down in South Devon now is a massive reality check for how many bands tour down this neck of the woods. Plymouth does get on some tours but the sound at the venue is shocking, so I skipped getting Wolf Alice tickets as I want to see them play somewhere good for my first time seeing them.
I do have tickets to see Porridge Radio in Exeter in October which I'm looking forward to, but nothing else on the horizon just yet.

RHCP at Old Trafford Cricket in Manchester. Superb but short at about 1.40. I thought they were a lot better than when I saw them on the By The Way tour years and years ago. Keidis has obviously had some tuition in how to look after his voice I'd say.
They played 'Hey' off Stadium Arcadium. Epic. No Under the Bridge but we did get 'I Could Have Lied'. And Donna Summers in one of the jams!
I'm now not so convinced that the venue has inherently bad sound as there was nothing wrong with it at all, having seen the Killers recently there and it being terrible sound.
In fact for a massive arena show I'd even say it was good. We were in a different spot to last time so I do wonder if it was that. However, Chad Smith's kick drum was about half the volume of the Killers and I think that had a lot to do with it.
They're a bit ramshackle as a show, disappearing off stage and leaving big gaps and only addressing the crowd very goofily. I kinda like that though, it's refreshing to see something less polished - and unlike the last few gigs I've seen it's not just like watching people perform the CD - it's more like seeing the Stones or Zep where it's different every time and there's improv going on.
Frusciante looked really happy which was awesome and reflected in his performance.
The support was a bit useless. Thundercat actually sounds really cool but he was on at six and it took us over an hour and a half to get there from a few miles out with the rail strike fuelled traffic, so we had no chance.
Then there was a technical problem with the second support (ASAP Rocky) so RHCP were actually on before him half an hour earlier than scheduled. After all that magnificent band stuff this bloke wanders on rapping (mediocrely) over a backing track as thousands of people leave. I have to say I don't always think Hip Hop translates well live, unless you're Jay Z or Cypress Hill.
Anyway RHCP were approaching a 10/10 there. Age isn't hurting them at all.

High five drake! I was there too and yep echo the sentiments. We had a fab time and thought they sounded great and good set. Thundercat was bizarre af! Like rasta Barry Gibb on speed! He was having a great time though!! His crowd addresses were amusing, "this one's about love" lol another - "nerds of a feather!"

Local news stories are now rife with comment after comment about how people have had to listen to, I think, three new songs and how it was a disaster because they were missing Can't Stop, Under the Bridge and Scar Tissue. You'd honestly think the entire crowd hated it.

Anybody ever gone to Victorious festival? Kind of tempted to get a day ticket for one of the days (although there's only a couple of names per day I'd be interested in)

One of my friends goes quite a bit and she always has a great time.
Hella Mega Tour at the London Stadium last night. Had a fucking nightmare getting up there, a 2.25 hour journey was turned into a 4.5 hour journey and as a result missed all of Weezer and half of fallout boy, however what we saw of fallout boy was pretty spot on and managed to catch all of their biggest songs. Green Day were absolutely amazing though, I've seen them live before and whilst being one of my favourite bands, live without a doubt they are the best. They absolutely smash it every time and even if you don't love their music it's still worth going.
Absolutely amazing night only marred by the 8 hour travel time due to the mental traffic

Interesting re RHCP and no Under the Bridge. They didn't play it either when I saw them at the IW Festival, I thought because they were running late and were cut off at curfew. Not their biggest fan but they were ok.

Apparently Weezer were really great, did Africa and Enter Sandman for covers. And Fall Out Boy (the band she went to see) did one of their best shows for years, I guess they upped their game playing alongside 2 other big bands.

We saw them in Bournemouth years ago and they were really good then..
Got tickets for the Foo Fighters tribute in Wembley later in the year and I'm hoping these rail strikes are done by then as it made it brutal getting about. It didn't help the Stones were playing Hyde Park and Ed Sheeran was doing Wembley on the same day. All of that added to usual London traffic made it rough.
