At least we can all agree now he’s just doing his regular Chris Pratt voice with some squeaky noises when Easter Eggs demand it.

Bit confused as to why the plot seems to be "Mario literally has to play some Mario games" but what the hell, my kids will love it, and I bet Jack Black and Seth Rogen will be amusing enough to keep me entertained.

Maybe just me, but this seems like a Mario skin stuck over the top of Lego Movie. Even has loads of the same voice actors doing the same voices.
Not a complaint. I loved the two Lego Movies.

I've never seen a SNL skit that has raised more than a smirk.

Reviews aside, this looks like it will do well for itself. First day domestic is 31 millions, that's pretty good for a kids movie (and especially for a videogame adaptation). Usually, a kids movie needs to be already a big IP to gross that much on the first day. Of course, Mario is technically already a big IP, so there's that.
Unless the lukewarm reviews really hurt it, or unless the rest of the world doesn't care (does China like Mario?), I don't see how it doesn't end up as the highest grossing videogame movie ever.

Just got back from seeing this with the kids, we all loved it and I even got a bit reflective watching a Mario film evoking childhood memories sat there with my own sprogs. As a gamer I was also considering the fact that a Mario game in ten years may actually have that level of visual fidelity. Very impressive CGI. Lots of geeky visual gamer references too such as the "Jump Man" poster in Mario's house.

Loved it here in the Gamma household as well. My daughter who is 7 had a blast. It looked great, was fun and the princess got a much needed update.

Just got back with the kids. Hands down best cinema experience of I’ve had with them and the level of fan service for older gamers was awesome.
Anyone catch the blink and you miss it name of the Parisian restaurant near the start?

Find it borderline hilarious how much online gamer discourse I've read about the lack of any deep plot in this. Classic midlife gamers not appreciating they're far removed from the target audience. The plot was fine for the film it served.

Has any Mario game had a plot that took more than 3 lines?

The plot was fine for the film it served. I'm aware that just because it's a kids film doesn't mean it should be absolved of criticism but there is barely any plot in a Mario game unless we're talking about Mario RPG. I see Pixar being held up as a role model but Pixar films are pretty much made for adults these days, I mean I would love to know what young child would get out of Soul for example. Hilariously a lot of the complaining reviews have started going proper hipster by talking about the creativity and originality of the OG Mario movie which was yes quite original but fucking terrible.

I enjoyed the film but my beef was poor quality writing (I know, it’s Mario). I was expecting it to be more like the Lego movies, so that’s my bad. I just thought it was weird having such an array of comedy acting royalty and there not being anything for them to do. The plot was absolutely fine and I liked there was no dead time, it rattled along.

Saw this today with my boy, his first time in the cinema which made it more special. We all loved it. I don't think you could make a much better Mario movie. Animation was insane too.
