Given that I’ve already plowed tons of hours into this after starting again on PS5, and after 60 hours spent on PS4, I think I have to admit that it’s now entered my top 10 games of all time.
Right up there with Mario 64, Sega Rally, Resi Evil 1 (ps one), Goldeneye and Street Fighter 2 (Amiga).
Yep.

The game does a great job of making things sound much more complicated than they actually are - typical Kojima really I had the most fun when I had completed all the roads and was just driving up and down them with a full truck picking up and delivering along the way Oh and building a network of zip lines across the mountains Weird, isn’t it? Apparently what some of us want out of our gaming is to be an Amazon driver.

Apparently what some of us want out of our gaming is to be an Amazon driver. I actually had a moment where I was carrying a full delivery of materials that I really needed for a road and for a moment thought about abandoning the delivery and keeping them for the first time in the game. In the end I honoured the order but it gave me a window into the mind of a delivery driver with a PS5

I didn't even finish Chapter 2 on PS4, but bought the PS5 upgrade and have been slowly chipping away at this (whilst playing other things) and whilst I'm deep into chapter 3 I know there is a LOT more to do. I'm loving this game again, it's weird, tense, and also super relaxing.
I got a little sad yesterday when my stolen MULE truck which had been serving me well (I haven't unlocked Bridges trucks yet) finally gave up on me, timefall rain had nearly destroyed it and then I was a mere metre away from a generator and it died on me. Was a sad moment, that little truck helped me lug a shit load of materials around to complete the road network.
I hate the BT sections (though they're more bearable with the hematic grandes) but I really enjoy fucking with the MULEs. It's just generally a really great game.

I picked up the cheap upgrade when the PS5 version came out but still never put much time into it (I got to a bit where you go on a boat), enjoyed the VR training as a way to relearn how to play. Some day I'll go back and just restart but I think I'll possibly leave the networking stuff off, going into new areas and having lots of stuff already built by other players seems at odds with the whole set up.

I think the intention is the complete opposite. We are all interconnected strands, so the aim is to deliver other peoples cargo, leave them gear and leave shit all over the place for them to use.
Which does make it annoying when the doss cunts you’re grouped with don’t fix the roads.

I built and maintained all the roads myself in single player. If I'd played online, I'm not sure I'd have bothered either

But satisfying. You can get all the materials from routinely raiding the mule bases

I just made stuff as and when but found that I was doing a lot of leg work making roads and most in my server had done fuck all.

I still don't really get how it works, I played when it first came out and it felt really desolate, which was part of the appeal, but does that mean things are really built up now if you start playing today?

It kind of eases you into it as you go. Certain things don’t crop up until you reach specific story points, and no multiplayer stuff happens in an area at all until you’ve done the chiral network linking.

Ahh yeah I do vaguely recall that.

No idea what it's like now but at launch it was like an obstacle course to get into a base without hitting loads of message signs.

Also if you haven't unlocked something yet they don't appear on your map. I managed to miss trucks until right at the end by forgetting I hadn't done a particular quest. Then again I also went through over half of the game (including building all roads) without thinking of using the run button to boost vehicles....

At least you can deconstruct other peoples vehicles now. I remember near launch when you couldn't even get in to some places because there were fifty trucks piled up outside.
It's a gloriously mental game. Also has some of my best gaming moments tied up in it.

I generally run out of patience with the more batshit Kojima elements of MGS games, but this is fucking brilliant. Might have to play it again.

Yeah. There was something about it. I was addicted from beginning to end. For me it was those moments when you were alone in the wilderness, trying to navigate your way to a remote outpost. The Clifford encounters were great as well.

Yeah, I *really* loved it. My only two problems with it were:
- I appreciate what they were going for with using the soundtrack sparingly and precisely, but it was so good I wish I could have unlocked a jukebox mode, especially since the track cut off when you went near a habitat
- I know they put rocks everywhere to encourage you to walk (and make walking harder) but it just meant I spent 80% of my traversal time ramming into rocks in my van/on my motorbike

Without spoiling anything there's a particular point where you are tasked with going over the mountains and it hits all these emotional beats alongside stunning vistas and a real sense of this arduous journey. Fucking sublime.

Yeah, definitely. What's that band that features heavily on the soundtrack? Some gorgeous tracks at some epic moments, especially up in the mountains.

Yeah the soundtrack is great. I listen to both albums fairly regularly. Whilst not a massive fan of them, I really like the song Chvrches did for it as well.

When I was climbing up a hill balancing the corpse of the president on my back and the camera pulled back and that shitty song started playing I pretty much fell in love.

You mean the Low Roar song?
DON'T BE SO SERIOOOOUUUUUS
(yeah it's pretty brilliant at the start, like the world's strangest walking sim)

I love the automated delivery robots. Basically a pair of legs beneath a cargo platform, they stride off happily into the world, making a noise akin to that of a sore-throated duck trying to play a kazoo - it never failed to make me smile.

I wish I understood this game better, but I can't quite wrap my head around it, and the deliberate lack of control just leads to frustration during those cut scene boss fights. Couple that with the obfuscated story and long slow grind just annoys me. When I first played, I spent about a week rummaging for materials to build a road, the first chunk I made in the starting map and was huge, probably 600m when I clicked build, but I went back some time later and players had just let it go to ruin. On trying to rebuild it, it only went about 50m so I didn't bother playing more. My obsessiveness doesn't allow me to leave things undone and there is nothing but doing in this. It rubs me the wrong way.
I installed MSGV again instead to remember what playing a game was like.

Oddly, none of my roads ever went to ruin, either I was paired with better people or something else weird was going on. PS5 version.
