I said to myself many a time when playing this, "what the hell is this game". Confused whether I enjoyed it or not but it kept me hooked so it was definitely doing something right.
An extremely polished game, can't remember seeing any kind of bug. So glad it exists as it is just lovely to explore the world and it is completely bonkers as well. Barring the over finicky interaction when completing a delivery, it's an excellent game imo.

It's more of a job than a game.

It's seems to be one of those games, you're either riveted by it and totally enamoured with it or you can't seem to see the point.
Like Wunty, I was totally into it from start to finish, loved the atmosphere, the visuals, the soundtrack and the bleakness of it.
Ive only played it once, and at the first Ps4 launch too, so all this talk about it is making me want to do another play though, especially with the ps5 upgrade.

It’s on my replay list. Same as you I played it through at launch but now I have the PS5 Director’s Cut. Will get to it at some point.

The complete lack of any danger takes the shine off it a bit. The first time you go through a bit section is really tense and then when you realise they aren't any threat it kind of ruins the magic.

I love the automated delivery robots. Basically a pair of legs beneath a cargo platform, they stride off happily into the world, making a noise akin to that of a sore-throated duck trying to play a kazoo - it never failed to make me smile. Is it possible for them to get a good rank? Even with the roads built they still seem to get poor ratings. I needed an S for every mission so didn't bother with them

Not as far as I know!
From a functional standpoint, they're pretty useless - they destroy cargo as though it's going out of fashion, for starters - but they amused me no end, and it was a passive way of getting likes and materials while I was off making more important deliveries.
Maybe there was some sort of efficiency upgrade that I missed?

They were useful for material deliveries to locations where the rank was less important. But yeah, even with a complete network they aren't great. Still used them though...

Copied from the other thread…. I still can’t quite figure out if I like it. I like the premise, but there is something about it that’s putting me off. The cuff link and mission screens are really busy and the writing is so small it’s really hard to follow what is going on. All the encounters I’ve had with Mules and BTs have been more annoying than enjoyable. I’m relatively early on (just unlocked the Grenades and taken on the long delivery to port knot city . Seems to be almost universally liked here so I’ll stick with it for a while longer and hope it clicks.

It is a very odd game, one where I was constantly wondering what I was playing. The BTs and mules can be a bit annoying but they can mainly be avoided. The BTs will go away so long as you get far enough away from the zone they are in. There are certain areas where you will have to fight them though. Mules as well are easily avoided unless there is a particular bit of cargo you are needing from their area. Also fairly easily dispatched once you have a few weapon upgrades.
I really enjoyed it though, the scenery and general ambiance got me sucked in. Maybe my pizza delivery and white van man employment when I was younger made me enjoy the fetching and delivering which is the main part of the game.
I played it on PS4 and I am quite certain I will play through it again with the upgraded PS5 version.

Maybe now I've got the weapons to deal with them they'll be less of an annoyance. As you can't see them (I know you can scan so they show up briefly) I feel I am lucking my way through the encounters rather than having any kind of skill. I feel the map interface could be better, and everything is so small. I'm also not sure if I should be picking up metals, resins etc. and what effect they have. There is a lot to get your head around and I'm not sure I understand it all which is a bit annoying. I'm going to stick with it though, as its something different and I generally give up on games far too easily

I’ve just made it to Lake Knot City , after defeating the boss. That was definitely more luck than judgement (panicked throwing of grenades was the ‘tactic’). Those blood grenades definitely make the BT sections less of a chore. Can just clear a path through. Still not sure what is going on, but there is something about it that’s keeping me gripped. That bit after the BT section prior to Port Knot City when you are safe, it opens out to show the city and the music kicks in was very nice.

Absolutely loving this so far. Just got to the central part of the "country" and thought I'd wind down and stop playing at 9, but eventually dragged myself away from it after midnight.
Fucking up mule camps and nicking their stuff using their own trucks is just so immensely satisfying.

The trucks you get are loads better though Are you playing it online?

Sarted this yesterday, played for an hour or so (which is like saying that I played for five minutes and the rest was cutscenes). It is certainly very Kojima, but I can't yet say whether that's a good thing or not. Will play a little longer and see where it goes, assuming it goes anywhere other than up Kojima's own arse.
On the plus side, it runs pretty well on my laptop with medium settings at 720p60 or 1080p30. Though it feels like a slow-paced game, I still prefer 60fps even at the price of visual fidelity.

@aa - yeah, playing online which is pretty cool. Started building a few roads and someone else came along and finished them while I was doing other stuff. I must've only unlocked the decent Bridge truck very recently as it wasn't showing up when I fabbed bikes earlier today. Just took it for a test run and it's a massive improvement over the Mule one (practically bottomless storage in comparison!) Spent 22 hours with it so far and I'm still on chapter 3.

I foolishly missed unlocking my own trucks until I had almost finished the game by missing the key mission. Despite playing online only one road segment ever got built for me. I did build all of the rest myself though.
I enjoyed the game, my wife didn't think it was much of a game to be only watching though.
Edit - I also missed that you could boost vehicles for over 50 hours too somehow...

Just moved the story forward in chapter 3... Glad that I'm playing with the curtains drawn! lingering shots of Fragile in wet undies... I didn't realise you could boost vehicles until 20 hours in, and have only just realised you can pop wheelies on bikes. Using the floating carriers as skateboards is another one they don't explain (or maybe they do and it's hidden away in the countless pages of hints)

Claimed Death Stranding the other day, while it was free on EGS, and it's listed under my transactions, however when I view the Director's Cut listing, it doesn't state "in library". I guess that means the free version was not the DC one; is there a point in upgrading it?

Sounds like they gave away the directors cut at 4pm then swiftly changed it to the basic version. I can't really compare the two, but some of the stuff they've added to the DC is far from essential (race track and shooting range)
I'd say give the vanilla release a go and if you fall in love it you can always buy it and transfer your save over.

Shooting and racing would not be what I turned Death Stranding on to do
Just had a look and it sounds like they did add quite a bit. Nothing to drastically change the game, but a few quality of life improvements, customisation options, more roads and stuff
Shame it's exclusive or I'd be tempted to play it again

Played another couple hours tonight. The story is interesting enough, but I still can't gel with the gameplay. Delivering stuff seems to be just, you know, walking and running. The BT encounter didn't do it for me either, once they discover you it takes forever to shake them off. And then I just failed, and shit happened? I still made it back safely, but no idea if things will get any better. And everything is still so damn slow.
The game could never connect to the server for some reason, so I had to play offline. I suppose you see more help and leave likes around in online mode, not sure how much of a difference it would make though. Those ladders were quite useful.
Regarding the graphics, as soon as the rain started, a stable 60fps was out of my league, even at 720p and minimum details. Must be the CPU. I switched to 30fps and now I'm running at 1080p and default settings, which looks nice enough I guess. And judging from GPU usage, I have a lot of leeway to avoid any framerate drops. Good enough for me. Not sure how much longer I'll play it, anyway.

Played another three hours tonight. What a weird game. It's gripping in a way, but I can't actually say I'm having fun while playing. Reminds me of Euro Truck Simulator 2, which I didn't play for too long either. The story has a number of great ideas held together by an agonizingly bad script. I dread reading new interviews when they come up. Maybe the online component would make it more engaging? Servers are still being hammered, so I can't say. I'm starting to reach my limit. I'll take on the big delivery to Port Knot City next, and when I get there, I'll see whether I feel like continuing.

The game opens up a lot more after that point, but yeah, the core of the game doesn't change massively, you just get some more interesting tools to play with in the sandbox. I'm nearly at 40 hours played and only started it a week ago, so it's clearly ticking all of the right boxes for me at least. Not fully invested in the story, but there are some moments of greatness in there the Mama chapter was a bit of a gut punch, and the Fragile one was quite moving too (wet panties aside) Some of the memory chip unlocks are almost painful to read. They're just Kojima fawning over his famous mates. There's one for the Bronson soundtrack IIRC (yes really) that was just plain embarrassing.

I've just got to the second location where I've got to tie the knots or something. Avoided some fellas out on the moors and then had to slow to a crawl while the wierd BT thing was happening.
This location has a bike so I'm hope that's it now for all the trudging around and I can m0t0rb1k3z everywhere. Faceplanting off a mountainside cos I've got mallowlegs and restarting the whole trek is not for me
Still don't really know what's going on and at the moment so hopefully things start opening up a bit. I'm already uninterested in wandering off the beaten path to get lost cargo. That shits for the termites now.
