Well I’m just glad everyone here has seen The Wire. On the other hand, I used to enjoy telling my colleagues in the DVD and Video section of HMV that I’d never seen the Godfather when it was a massive seller when it came out as a box set one Christmas. About that "everyone" bit...🥴

Yeah I've not seen The Wire either. Another one that passed me by somehow.

I've only seen the first three seasons. I will rectify this at some point

Had The Wire and Sopranos on DVD for years, never seen either of them. Started them both, never got very far! I think at this point, whilst I'd still really like to watch The Wire, I'm not really bothered about the Sopranos.

I watched the first couple of seasons when bbc2 had them on about 15 years ago. It was alright, quite a slog though. I gave up when they did the docks stuff

Fuck off, Frank Subotka is a brilliant character! No2 on my list. Really need another rewatch.

I think a big part of these shows is catching it during the zeitgeist when it’s new and everyone else is vibing off it. After a while it becomes hard to connect in the same way, like raving about the books of Dickens and insisting everyone reads them because they’re absolutely the best

Worth noting I didn’t give up because of the docks, that was just the point I burned out. BBC we’re showing an episode every night, I was taping them then suddenly had 6 hours of stuff to catch up on, i was drowning in Wire

I dunno about that. For me, the Wire is the pinnacle of the recent (20 years +) trend of high end TV shows. The plot, writing, characterisation, acting and presentation is where it's at.
Makes Line of Duty look like Playschool.

I also find TV drama series date in a different way to movies.

I can imagine The Wire would be pretty hard going now compared to modern TV. I'm glad I watched it at the time :-)

Never seen Line of Duty either. I dunno, I got to the point with Wire where I felt I was forcing myself to watch it because I should, even though I did think it was alright

I'd never watched a Harry Potter film until this year. They're not as shit as I thought they would be. Still never seen a Potter movie or read any of the books. It's the one that gets the most shock from most Millenials, they can't believe it and think I'm weird. But I'm in my early 50s now and don't have kids so Harry Potter completely passed me by at the time, no interest. It's the same level of shock I'd have I guess if they said to me they hadn't seen Star Wars.

Deep down I'm a contrarian tit. The more I'm told "I must watch this" the more I resist watching it.

You didn't watch any of the Adam Curtis docs i recommended so sod off.

To fans of The Wire and similar I recommend watching Southland.
Regina King is her usual awesome self but it has a lot of other really good performances by the likes of C. Thomas Howell, Michael Cudlitz, Ben Mackenzie and Lucy Liu
It mainly follows Regina who is a detective and Ben M who is a rookie beat cop at the same precinct

Southland's great, although it does take a shitty turn in the last season.
Sadly only available on DVD on physical media. You can buy it in HD on Prime but it's expensive for all 5 seasons.

I'm really contrary, so when everybody starts talking about the same thing as with this, I go out my way not to bother. I actually don't even know the fuck it's supposed to be, I just know I'm sick of gearing the name already. I don't watch a huge amount of TV anyway in fairness. I've got the first season of the Sopranos because an acquaintance of mine, who is usually too cool to be impressed by anything, went absolute total fanboy over it, he's flow to America to meet cast members and tour sets and all that. Still not got around to starting it though. I probably haven't seen a popular film other that Star Wars or Bond in 10 years +.

Yeah I've not seen The Wire either. Another one that passed me by somehow. Or me. I think we watched the first episode, Mrs Hermit decided it wasn't for her and we never watched it again.

I've still got my filing cabinet speshul edishun of the complete Homicide.
Oz is another great series that's bleak as fuck (if a little dated stylistically). You can pick that up for peanuts on DVD, complete.

Capturing the zeitgeist is right. Can you imagine anyone saying ‘oh, you’ve not seen game of thrones? You HAVE to watch it’ now?
I know I go on about it a lot but it does genuinely amaze me how quickly the world just erased it from its consciousness.
