Nice, always had a soft spot for Gretsch. Bigger than I’m used to though

Very nice. I'm not sure there are any rubbish Gretschs, tbh.

Love a Gretsch. If money was no object then I’d get a White Falcon.
As it is, I’m currently playing an Epiphone LP Muse.

It was the most beautiful guitar I’ve ever owned. However it played like a dog and was the biggest guitar I’ve ever held, uncomfortable is an understatement. I was gutted as I’d wanted one for years...

I really need to pick guitar back up. I've not played properly in at least five years, maybe more :-(

Mint green scratchplates are a fucking abomination. Also, I want to be able to choose a maple fretboard for every finish.

Nothing looks right apart from the correct mint green on an old strat, not all repros get the shade right though

To flip this around. I just saw a really cheap electric guitar in the second hand store down the road. Been meaning to find a new hobby.
Can you play an electric guitar without an amp? At least well enough to practice/learn?
You may all now proceed to laugh at my lack of guitar knowledge.

You certainly can and that’s how I learned as a kid, but these days you can pick up mini amps for around twenty quid that are like the equivalent of those replica mini consoles - or a headphone amp.

Most of my playing is on an unplugged electric on the sofa of an evening tbh

I do it on the bass too if I can't be arsed. Still works.

Good luck, I hope it brings you pleasure, the guitar is a thing of beauty be it classical or hard rock or blues. Maybe 2023 is the year I spend some actual time on guitar. I have been able to play for about 20 years but due to my total lack of commitment I can only play simple songs (truthfully I am probably at the same level as someone who has played and practiced every day for a year max, it breaks my heart*), no "lead" chops at all and I still can't tune without a turner! I almost can but just do not get it right. *obviously not enough to do anything about it. I do have spare time but inevitably I pick up a game pad and not my guitars.

Depends on the guitar, generally about as loud as talking

Best to get a semi acoustic like the Gretsch I posted at the top of this page, nice volume level and easy playability for the living room 👍

Semi accoustics are a lot louder than an unplugged electric if you want to play quietly. Playing unplugged is a great way of practicing. If you have it easy to hand you can pick it up and play whenever you have a chance. This really helped me develop as I now have a tinker on the guitar when I would have been mindlessly scrolling online.
When you mostly play an unplugged electric you also have the lovely experience when you hear what you’ve been learning coming through the amp for the first time if you sometimes plug her in.

Be careful of running into bad habits, unplugged will cover up bad habits so don’t be surprised when you do plug in that you’re getting a lot of strings noise from the lack of muting with fingertips etc

True, this is one of things I’ve had to try and remedy. Or I just turn up the distortion 😅

Also you can play it loud or quiet.

On the topic of playing unplugged...
There are decent headphone amps available now. I don't mean plugging into an amp and running headphones from it, I mean like a wireless dongle that goes in the jack input of your guitar and beams to headphones with amp simulation.
If you are dipping your toes in try the Fender Mustang Micro and then if you like that and have the cash you could consider the Boss Waza Airs, which are a Katana amp software built into headphones. You can stream music to them and play along, and simulate amps and effects.
99 times out of 100 I just play unplugged though, I only really drag the amp out for band practice.

I’ve got a Mustang and the Waza Air - Wazas all day long, the amp sounds great which I think is helped by them tailoring it to the headphones they provide. Not so keen on the Mustang, too many modelling options and none of them that great imo, might have been my headphones though. I’d try the cheaper Nux one before recommended the Mustang

Speaking of semis, I’m told my 355 order will be ready around March 🥰 Now I have a semi too I put a made to measure order in for one with a Bigsby with Peach last April as Gibson stock ones now all have TOMs. A few weeks ago they had some of their own M2M 355s on sale, almost the exact spec I went for except light Murphy lab aged and a bit cheaper than my order. If I’d known they were coming I’d have held on!

Anyone had any experience with a Fender Aerodyne model? There’s a Tele Aerodyne that I really like the look of and seems to review well. I’ve pretty much only ever played Epiphone guitars (not got that Gibson money), mostly Les Pauls but keep toying with the idea of a change up.
