Really does depend on budget. I personally would not go less than about 300 quid new unless it was something I wanted to tinker with. It depends how likely you are to get past messing about for a few weeks against it being a hobby you stick with I guess. In the Squier bracket, the Classic Vibes are generally the best and will be punching towards the old Mexican standards in quality (although I think they have dropped off a bit since the heady days people talked them up as Fender killers). The below would be a banging guitar if your budget would stretch to it. Both Squier and Epiphone have moved away from rosewood fingerboards and tend to use Indian Laurel - it can be a crapshoot whether that wood looks good or not, and I’ve had a Squier CV bass with a fretboard that was basically grey. But - you can’t go wrong with varnished blonde maple! If you get the bug get a more traditional Tele for your next one. www.andertons.co.uk/brands/squier/squier-telecaster-guitars/squier-classic-vibe-70s-telecaster-thinline-maple-fingerboard-naturalI’d start with something like a Fender micro amp with headphones and then if you are ready for amps a Boss Katana 50 would sort you out for bedroom needs. That CV thinline literally makes me salivate. It looks gorgeous and plays very nicely too - I've tried one but just cannot justify buying another tele or, really, guitar of any sort. Including this beauty not that I need another guitar with WR humbuckers. RE: amps, the Katana 50 is a good shout. I'd like to put a good word in for the Catalyst 60 too. While the world is going to shit in most ways, let's take our wins where we can: we are really spoiled right now by the quality of digital modelling available at affordable prices. It wasn't that long ago that it sounded like crap. Huge range of gain options, and a beautiful base clean tone for those who want a platform for pedals. Add its two channels, functionality as an interface (plus free software), attenuation options, range of in-built Helix effects and its price point and it represents incredible, if not insane, value.

@ekz thanks! They were cheap and I measured up and just thought, fuck it, I'll just make them fit!
Though the finishing touches have to be the Knight on the left and the giraffes on the right. Those giraffes are made to measure!

Speaking of Teles…just discovered the American Ultra which replaces the Elite. I should hate it, but it’s totally got under my skin.
I’d have to sell three guitars to justify it and would likely still be financing a good chunk depending on what I got for them.
1. Epi Firebird (the good, ‘Inspired By Gibson’ one). It’s cool AF but is that big in the case I almost never get it out. Still, I always wanted one.
2. Vintera 70s Tele (with faux WRHB in the neck). A really great guitar, that has upgraded wiring and a non-standard phase split, but I’d have to shed a Tele to justify and my Baja goes nowhere.
3. Epi 56 Gold Top Standard (double P90s). Again I love this guitar - I’ve upgraded both the guts have all been upgraded as has the bridge. But I have a JJN Les Paul and a Gibson Standard.
Would I regret it? I’d still have a decent number of guitars left.

Well I don’t think anybody was bothered lol but I binned off the above idea and instead I’ve ordered a Princeton Tonemaster.
I already use a DR Tonemaster for my band, but it typically lives under the stairs in its sleeve loaded with stuff in the cab so realistically does not get used in the house.
This will live upstairs and hopefully encourage me to pick up my guitars for pleasure more often, instead of just for the band. I will report back when I’ve had a bit of use out of it after a week, although having prior experience with the DR version I already rate these amps.

Well I haven’t tried my pedalboard through it yet but so far the TM Princeton arrived today and is smashing it out of the park. On the lowest wattage (faux) attenuation, it’s much more manageable for house volume than the Deluxe Reverb version. Have run my more placid Strat and my 335 through it and it sounds like the characteristics of those guitars, perfectly. It’s got a different thing going to the Deluxe, snappier and more direct, but not ‘boxy’ like the Blues Jr I used to have was.
As a ‘naked’/straight-in amp this is one of the nicest things I’ve ever played.
I love it.

After owning a Dean Evo XM for 14 years (and not doing nearly enough with it), this year I've finally started putting in some more serious practice. To reward myself for sticking with it I bought myself a Harley Benton CST24T (Thomann.de house-brand) It's a PRS knock-off, but at less than a third of the price of a real PRS and it looks absolutely stunning (Ocean Flame, a greenish blue). It even played great right out of the box (to me at least). I've always wanted a PRS, but given my "level" of playing I could never justify to myself (or my wife ) to buy one. I'm amazed by the quality of such a "cheap" guitar. And then I also bought a Nux Mighty Plug Pro headphone practice amp, which is brilliant for "silent" practice.

Yeah, it's not rubbish, it's bloody great: And one for Quaddy, I also bought a bass a couple of months back. Which probably is rubbish, but was incredibly cheap and does the job:

I’m absolutely being hit by GAS at the mo.
Have been playing my American Special Strat all week, and have been inspired to actually woodshed and get back some of the skill and knowledge I’ve neglected for a couple of years.
I think the instrument has reached the peak point where they get to after a few years and a certain number of hours and they are worn in. It feels like putting on your comfiest old jeans.
The ma-hoo-sive CBS headstock, satin finished maple neck, I love it, and have finally come to quite like the huge fretwire on it as its own thing.
But now I want one in Olympic White which is just ridiculous. No production models appear to have the big headstock, so I’d have to Mod Shop it, which again is ridiculous.
Send my credit card thoughts and prayers or contact my loved ones to stage an intervention please.
In other news I’ve been enjoying my Mono ‘The Tick’ bag, although have found it very overpriced for what it is. My Mono double gig bag also cost a sh*t ton, but you can feel the quality there. The Tick is still a decent bit of kit but it doesn’t feel as premium as the bag it’s on. However, I’ve found this little extra boxy bag clinging to the neck portion and I’ve found it very useful at both practices and gigging. Apparently a common thing is the Velcro straps failing over time so I’m going to be careful to remove it as little as possible and hope that this prevents it.
At my recent gig it had charging leads, my tie, sandwiches, a bottle of Volvic, set list, spare plectrums, ear plugs, my sunglasses (it was bright in the car!) and other ephemera in it. There’s also a pocket with sleeves I had a vape and my nail clippers in (for some reason the nail on my middle finger always grows rapidly and gets in the way of E-form chords). Basically it was really handy having a ‘bits bag’ attached to the case really tidily without having to handball another bag in. Recommended with the caveat that it’s a bit of a rip off if you have a compatible case.

Well no intervention came so I bought a new guitar is it rubbish.
I won’t have it until Tuesday I don’t think, but it’s an American Pro II Strat in Mystic Surf Green, maple neck and SSS of course, as god intended. There’s £400 off most colours in the Guitar Guitar summer sale if anybody is gassing for one.
I’m selling my heavily modded Gold Top Epi and my Firebird, both of which I love but something has to give both financially and space wise.
I reckon everybody reaches a middle aged spread where they realise Strats are the one really, and I’m there.

I don’t really get on with Fenders and offsets have never been on my radar, but my daughter wants to learn a bit of guitar so the scale might be better for her hand size. Now I’m PUMPED at the idea of one. It’ll be good to put one on tick to work on my credit history here too, at least that’s my man math justification

It’s a great level of guitar to start with and when you think back to the rubbish we started on, it’s amazing what you can get now. They’ll never be *quite* as good as a ‘full-fat’ Fender either but you can absolutely get them to nearly there with a few incremental upgrades over time if she takes it seriously and is arsed about that stuff. Speaking of - parted company with my much upgraded Epi Les Paul 1956 Pro Les Paul yesterday, along with my Firebird and some good cases. I am already feeling a bit of remorse over the Les Paul, it was decent to start with but was upgraded within an inch of its life, with a Gotoh bridge, APBR style mounting, period correct knobs, thumb bleeders, a Tusq nut, and much better electronics: Up against my Gibson, I’d say this was 95% there on sound and playability, and maybe 70% on looks and feel. The aesthetic difference is obviously the poly finish against the nitro, the back being less attractive (Gibson uses a honey-like colour on the back of their Gold Tops so this decision is baffling) and the fact the binding on a Gibson is always more visible from a front-on view. Epis often only look bound from a side angle. The 5% on the feel is the neck. As good as this thing got, with the frets done professionally and everything, there is something about the neck feel in hand I can’t explain with my actual Gibsons that does just take them over the edge a bit. The wood is usually better as well so they always sound a bit richer unplugged. I did absolutely love this guitar though and hope I’ve not done the wrong thing. On to the next… Having spoken to Guitar Guitar yesterday they upgraded the delivery of my new Strat to Saturday delivery - and it’s gone Pete Tong. Am praying it’s not lost or damaged and is something more mundane, but it ain’t coming today and I have no info. The locking tuners and strings I’ve bought for it *are* coming though, with nowhere to go. Sigh.

I wish I still had my first guitar, Epiphone Les Paul from about ‘96. Bolt on neck, pretty sure it was a bit of a clownburst finish and the humbuckers were probably singlecoils

Bolt on neck, pretty sure it was a bit of a clownburst finish and the humbuckers were probably singlecoils They’ve come on leaps and bounds now. It’s a total myth IMO that the Korean ones from the 90s are this holy grail. I had one and it was a bit of a dead duck until I spent a lot of money on it. The pickups and wiring in particular were absolutely trash compared to later models I had. I think I’ve played the model you’re talking about! I’ve kept my 335 and my Gold Glory Epis. Both are excellent and I don’t *think* I’d ever get a Gibson 335 unless I won lottery money. I will say that getting rid of a couple, although I have of course made a bloody loss on them feels better. It’s been 2 out and 1 in if it ever arrives, and has freed up space and money to do it, so it feels less like hoarding this time!

Well it finally arrived. Definitely some sort of backlog issue with DPD, and it just turned up with no time slot text in an unmarked van - reckon they’ve had subcontractors in to help. Anyway… It’s wonderful. The shaved heel joint isn’t as big a deal as they’ve made out, but the neck is amazing to play. It’s satin on the back too. Trem is the most responsive I’ve ever tried that didn’t have Floyd written on it. Pickup tones are Uber Strat and it has options for bridge/neck as well as all three. I wasn’t expecting *quite* so much metallic flake in the paintwork but it’s very nice. Quite stunning against the mint green pick guard in the flesh. I don’t think the colours are quite right on this photo. I’ve not pulled the cellophane off yet as I’ll leave it until I replace the tuners with a set of locking ones, and get these puny 9s off the thing. However I’ll play it for a few days before that.

Went and got the Jag, gave the neck a shim, rubbed the sharp fret ends down and gave the board a drink, it’s bloody lovely. Weighs a ton though. Perfect for the littl’un

Pickups sound good, chuck some reverb on and it’s good and surfy. I’ll upgrade the pots and wiring at some point, and probably start looking at booteekie pickups because I’m a tart, but doesn’t really need it. I will be swapping the trem unit for a Fender, the stock cheese metal one is a bit clunky, but it holds tune well. Maybe the tuners will get a swap for the QoL but these ones work ok
I strung it with 9s for her little fingers to better cope with callous development, those on the 24” scale feels like a nylon string
