The one where Gerrard Butler tries to kill Jamie Fox is probably his best one by far. One of the better family member killed so I'll turn into a pyscho and kill everyone films. Outside of that and 300 he is pap. The White House Has Fallen Down? There's also that one with the 2 bad guys and the cop in the police station. I keep wanting to say Copland, but that's a Stallone movie I think. Turns out I'm not good with movie names. Law Abiding Citizen and Copshop. The latter was a bit shit imo.

Three Thousand Years of Longing - 7/10
I only gave this 5-10 minutes before giving up last time, although that was mainly due to Prime only having a ropey looking 1080p version of this for some reason (4k + HDR is an absolute must for this) It's an absolutely gorgeous film in places with a great turn from Swinton (when you get past the dodgy wig and slightly iffy Yorkshire accent). Elba is surprisingly decent in it too, for an actor I don't usually rate. It drags on a bit towards the end, but the Djinn's tales more than make up for it.

Guardians of the Galaxy 3
First time seeing it since watching at the cinema. One of my kids had a spell of watching the other 2 movies on repeat, but was reluctant to watch 3 again because of how sad it made her. Fair enough.
A well balanced movie which stood up to a repeat viewing. Still too long though. Probably the best of the recent Marvel movies (but that’s not saying much is it?)
8/10

I rather enjoyed Greenland, wasn't quite sure there'd ever be a sequel given the nature of the film but as they've been filming it not too far away from where I live I think it's safe to say there will be one.

The Iron Claw
Not a wrestling fan but this was good film (not sure how accurate it is) I use to watch some wrestling long time ago as it was popular and remember the texas tornado and didn't know he killed himself and what happened to his brothers. Efron is great in the role (all the cast is) but he looks a bit strange not sure if it was prosthetics or bulking up changed his face)
8/10 - worth a watch once

Mad Max: Fury Road
Watched this with the boy at the weekend as thought he'd like it seeing as how Furiosa is out (I'll wait til that comes to streaming so he can watch it with me). This was my first time seeing it since I saw it at the cinema and... yeah. Not much to be said really. It's fucking phenomenal. The weak link for me is Hardy, who I don't honestly like very much in the role. Just as well he's second fiddle to Theron's magnificent Furiosa. Still can't actually work out what accent Hardy is going for either. Normally that kind of gripe would be enough to bring a score down a bit but, nah. It's still an outstanding film regardless, due in no small part to the fact that Max just seems a minor character in his own film and Hardy does at least nail the physical side of things, which is all that's required really. The boy also loved it but as he said "It's my second favourite sandy film next to both parts of Dune".

YMMV, but I didn't find myself needing subtitles all that much. Aside from Hemsworth, it's not an especially talky movie anyway. I don't want them. I'm in Stockholm, so anything that is subtitled is in Swedish, which can hinder my understanding depending on how complicated the dialogue is, or how much is subtitled. I don't mind them at home so much but it's a bit of a pain in the butt in the cinema.

Nowhere to run - 7/10
Jean Claude plays a con on the run who starts camping on a farm. The owner of the house on the farm is a widowed hot lady with two kids who are in the process of being evicted by a greedy land developer who looks like he has diplomatic immunity…
Jean Claude does some casual pervy stalking and stealing from the farm house, but he has a heart of gold and knows karate so of course he is going to save the day.
So yes it’s tonally all over the place and surprising melodramatic, but it’s saved by a cast of Jean Claude, Roseanna arquette, ted Levine, Josh Ackland and Keiran culkin. ] Never seen it before, it’s deffo worth a watch.

I think I’m going to head to see Furiosa while it’s still playing. Were there any subtitles? I’m assuming not. I'm in Budapest, so there were Hungarian subtitles. Often my eyes drift down to the subtitles as I'm curious as to how they have translated certain things. It didn't happen here since, as others have said, the movie's not particularly dialogue-heavy - in fact, I read something very recently where Miller was cited as saying dialogue holds back the forward momentum of movies. A bit of a radical take, but I guess I can see it in the case of Furiosa / Fury Road.

RE: Nowhere to Run.
I'd totally forgotten about that one. I think I saw it in the cinema and quite liked it at the time. (though that has not proven to be a mark of quality). The opening shot was a really long one of the prison bus coming into view and then the escape, right?

A bit slow but ted Levine is a great villain. Deffo top 10 jean Claude, for what that’s worth 😊 The more I look back the more I realise sudden death is his best movie, that really is brilliant.

Back from Furioso. I liked that quite a bit. Having just watched the other Max Max films ahead of it though, I think it is one of the weaker ones. I'm not sure if it really adds much to Furioso's character other than giving us some more background detail that is not hugely necessary.
Taylor-Joy, as well as the kid that plays the younger version, is excellent though and there is plenty of excellent visuals throughout. It doesn't go as relentlessly hard as Fury Road, but when it does it really goes for it. Heard Miller on Kermode's podcast the other day and he mentioned how one of his favourite parts of the cinema experience is when the seat shakes and there is certainly plenty of that.
It is a bit long and does feel the length, unlike the previous Max films, but it is also giving much more story than probably any of those previous films. Because of that, I wonder if it might reward a re-watch a little more than those.

Civil War
Great cinematography at times. Felt like it was trying to say something impactful but outside of the images not so much. But then maybe that’s the point.

Slight spoilers I guess but in real life there’s another brother who also has a tragic life and if anything, the film has dialled down the overall glory and bleakness of it all

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
I'm biased because the 1968 original is my favourite film for many reasons.
Kingdom was spectacular. Every shot composed like a work of art. Great nods to the original. I got really quite emotional when the music from the original kicked in during a certain homage heavy scene.
Loved it - plus it didn't cost me anything - a prize for winning my family's fantasy football league.

No Way Home is on BBC - I’d forgotten how much I enjoyed it. Willem Defoe powerbombing Spider-Man through the floor is a top 5 MCU moment for me.

Yeah it’s definitely the best MCU spider-man. Not Spider-verse good but up there with the better MCU titles.

I found it really, really annoying tbh. I’m not a big fan of plots running on stupidity but No Way Home really took the piss. Like he caused every single problem in the movie.

That's my issue with it tbh, there's just soooo much bullshit. Everything feels inconsequential, no weight to anything, every single scene looks green screened, everything is a quippy joke, it just keeps going on.
The best parts are all the raimi bits.

Anyway:
Excalibur - it’s so weirdly self important and pretty much takes it as read that you are familiar with the lore, so it’s just two hours of almost unrelated scenes happening in some vague order. Like it’s barely a movie, just a series of Arthurian TikTok’s. You can’t fault its commitment, though. It looks good and everything is muddy and filthy.
This is also the first time I’ve watched it where I wasn’t high as a kite so it did lose something in that respect.
5/10

Sting - Cineworld Early Screening
Are you an arachnophobe? Don't see this film.
Starting with an elderly dementia sufferer in a rundown apartment calling a pest controller, who turns up and asks if she's the woman with the fucked up parrot, she doesn't know what he's talking about and nor does the audience, anyhow he investigates the very loud noises in the wall, he probably wishes he hadn't.
Time for a "4 days earlier" cue card.
We're in space! A small meteorite travels through the atmosphere smashing through a window in a rundown apartment into a dolls house, the thing isn't a rock but a brain like egg and a spider pops out. Enter Charlotte (that's a subtle name for this movie) a young girl who has sneaked into the apartment to nick something and sees the spider and decides to take it home with her before a scary older woman catches her in the act.
What follows is a surprisingly entertaining low budget single location (the apartment block and a little bit outside) horror film that doesn't do anything too surprising but it's certainly worth a watch, assuming you're not an arachnophobe. At 92 minutes it rattles along fairly briskly but does a good job at creating some character moments.
It is pretty on the nose in very knowingly nodding hard at a couple of eighties action classics which I won't name for spoiler reasons but Alyla Browne (as Charlotte) makes a good child Ripley . She's having a good 2024 after being great as a young Furiosa too.
The third to last shot was so obvious they must have known the audience was expecting it.

Raimi’s take was angsty and brooding, whereas the comics were very quippy. I still think Dark Knight, Spooder-verse and Logan are as good as comic book films have been, but the MCU stuff is practically a genre of its own, and it’s probably the last essential entry in that series.
