What’s the story presentation like? The loose Pinocchio adaptation is definitely part of the appeal for me, and I’m already sold on the gameplay side.

So far, quite opaque, in typical Soulslike fashion - there's a Shrine Maiden type who gives some hints at the story, but otherwise up until now I've had to read documents etc. for backstory.
I will say she just mentioned another key figure from the traditional "P" story, who presumably I'm going to head off to look for, and that has me intrigued.
As I say, it's weird, in a good way. We'll see how it develops though.

See I beat that boss with some guarding but mostly dodge rolling - don't think I managed to pull off a single perfect parry on him, and still made short work of it. There are definitely later enemies where perfect parries are the best strategy, but so far I'm five hours in and mostly making short work of enemies with guarding and dodging (and legion arm, fable arts etc).

There is a lying mechanic which has a big impact on the ending you'll get - supposedly it's best to stick to one or the other and not mix otherwise you won't get the "right" ending. There are three endings apparently, so depends how much you want to put into the game.

mikeck Is dodge rolling only possible when not locked-on, like in the demo? Because dealing with the first boss the other night I didn't quite got it...

JonFE I don't believe so. I've been locked on and generally able to evade that boss fairly well. Though my inventory weight is currently sat at 50% which means I have the fastest dodge speed. I think you start being penalised if your weight goes over 60% of your carry capacity, until you start fat rolling. Edit - was hunting around for the article I read on it yesterday and can't find it (thought there were five levels of dodge speed) all I can find now is confirmation of three: Normal: Under 60% Slightly Heavy: 60-79% Heavy: 80-100%

That's really encouraging to be honest, as perfect parries are not my forte - and I find a need to rely on them to be the big weakness of some similar games. I'm happier to dodge. Will need to check my weight and make sure my dodges are optimal.

Anyone playing a strength build, take the handle off the police baton and put it on the greatsword to start and then better weapon later. The ability on it is really good.

I've got a lovely fire axe that I've now combined with the handle from another greatsword I stumbled upon.
Loving this, 7 hours in, few bosses down and enjoying the atmosphere and random NPCs I keep encountering.

That factory area absolutely rocked me. Kept dying to some of the mini boss type encounters like the Stalker, the one with dual shields and the one with the shovel that puts you on fire. But in the process of dying again and again I realise that I'm trying to perfect parry every time when I'm not particularly great at it and by whiffing a parry it'll take close to a third of my life away. And allowed me to realise that its fine to dodge or even just guard attacks and fight back to reclaim that grey health. Got past the main boss there after quite a few attempts and felt pretty cathartic in the way that defeating a Souls boss should.
As much as I struggle with it sometimes, it is aomewhat assuring to see that the general consensus is that this is a hard game even for Souls game diehards. But the setting and encounters all drive my interest in it.

I'm loving the factory area - it's probably where the game really started to feel like a very good soulslike which incorporates the best elements of the genre while putting its own stamp on things. There's just so much interesting stuff going on there in terms of encounters and challenges. I guess the real frustration is yet to come but I've been surprised at how the game hasn't been as hard as some say - the double shield guy I beat first time, and through dodging not perfect parrying. It does feel like you have quite a few options, some more optimal than others in the given situation.
Oh, and I'm all dressed up as a Mad Donkey rocking a fire axe with a booster glave handle. And chucking the odd cog and electric bomb. The game is delightfully nuts.

I'm a little bit ahead of that, I found the boss at the end of the factory quite tricky. I was thinking it was quite decent at the start but I'm liking it more than that now. I think there will probably be a boss that makes me drop it but we will have to see.

Yes - I stand by the boss difficulty slider idea as I can't help but think (based on reviews) there will be a boss that is a total brick wall for me.
(Actually, do we have a boss fights that made you quit the game thread? I imagine we must have, if not it would be an pretty good one to add)

Yup that factory boss is the wall for me right now, tried a fair few times yesterday and couldn't get further down than 2/3 of its health.
Also need to go back and try to beat that Stalker again, totally whooped me first time round.

I was enjoying the weapon, but seemed a waste of a fable art slot so swapped to a different handle.

Any suggestions? I don't think I've used a handle fable art yet, it's an area I need to explore I guess.

Also need to go back and try to beat that Stalker again, totally whooped me first time round. The matey you summon gets annihilated by him as well which doesn't help. When I eventually killed him it was by throwing the sink at him as soon as phase 2 started and then getting him stunned to do a finisher.

Yeh Fuoco was a pain. There's stuff to his moveset though that you just wouldn't be able to know without a few attempts at him tho. The ring of flame resistance you get in that factory helps. I find with bosses as well when their bar is white, you can do a full heavy charge to break them and have enough time to do another heavy charge as they're down, riposte and then another heavy charge attack

One of the mini bosses in the cathedral took me far more attempts than I was happy with. Wanted to stuff his shielded arm right where the sun doesn't shine.

Having a bit of trouble with the archbishop now as well. Not too good at bosses that are bigger than the screen as I constantly miss what's going on. Might try equipping the flame arm and cheesing him by running around while he burns.
Only at the chapter 4 and I'm finding it a fair bit harder than souls games, running round the world is easy enough but a couple of the bosses have been right buggers.

Very satisfying morning's play clearing up the Factory. From this thread I had an awareness that the final boss would be tough, so I decided to do everything I could - fully exploring, taking on the two optional bosses - obviously having drained the gunk before going for Puppet of the Future. To be honest the mob by the lever or crank to drain it caused more trouble than the Puppet of the Future - a pure patience game and he was down second or third time. In exploring I stumbled upon Survivor and honestly thought I didn't stand a chance - because, yet again, I was trying to parry when I should have been dodging. It took a good few goes but got him. I've got to say I really enjoyed Fuoco - I know exactly how many goes it took, 8, as I summoned each time and watched my supplies dwindle. There was never an issue getting him to the second phase and I think this is why the summon is worth it - the pure aggro allows you to whittle down the boss's health bar much more quickly. Just don't expect the summon to survive the fire AOE attack during the transitional phase as he is an absolute dumb-arse and keeps wailing on the boss rather than legging it. Then it's largely a patience game complicated by the fact that unless you attack the boss his health creeps back up to a certain point. Somehow, on the time I got him, I actually managed a couple of fatal attacks when he was stunned and it made all the difference.
This is easily the best Soulslike I've played in the last year or two - it's mechanically much more solid than Steelrising and the setting is even weirder.
