While we're at this, let's put map markers in The Outer Wilds, a hint system in The Witness, and a view end credits option in Nier Automata's main menu. Nier Automata has an easy mode. What Watch Aunt Alison DESTROY this Nanocrystaltard's argument with LOGIC!!

To devil's advocate for a moment, part of Nanocrystal 's initial point was that the developers' vision simply doesn't include an easy mode (which is fair) and also that the experience playing on such a mode would be different, not nearly as tense (also true and fair, but if someone's asking for an easy mode they probably want a different experience in the first place, so...) I guess what it boils down to for me is that asking for an easy mode, in and of itself, is not a bad thing. If FromSoft decide that their games should have one, I'll also accept that. But it's also not wrong IMO to think that a developer should not be obliged to add an easy mode to their game if they don't want to, and those clamouring for one should be prepared to accept that and either move on or decide to persevere with the game as is.

No one is arguing that it's a bad idea, just an unnecessary one.
These games carry their challenge as their badge of honour, their unique selling point. Demon and Dark Souls were pretty standard fantasy affairs storywise, in a standard fantasy setting (castles, swamps, forests), against standard fantasy enemies (ghouls, skeletons, knights, dragons and demigods). Bloodborne added the Cosmic Horror element (not deeply original), while Sekiro the Eastern setting and the purest combat. What let them all stand out was their obscurity and their difficulty / challenge and that's how they found an audience (people wanting to face the challenge and overcome it with the available tools), became popular and eventually commercial successes (see Elden Ring) to the point they introduced a whole new genre with similar specifications / settings.
Remove the USP and what are you left with? A game like every other game; it could welcome a new audience, but it could also alienate the existing one - why risk it? They're totally arguing that it shouldn't exist [ fair do's]. You don't argue this long over something you don't care about [ pot, kettle, black springs to mind ]
The badge of honour part says it all [the badge of honour part is clearly meant for the games, not the gamers]. An easy mode would take that away from people who play it on Normal. I really think that's all it is
I don't think the difficulty is the only selling point for From's games either. There are hours long lore videos online. People discussing different builds, etc. None of that is tied to the difficulty [would lore or different builds grab people's attention initially, though, the same way their curiosity over that "impossible new game"? I'm not so sure]

Playing this now, dodge definitely feels better by default. I can't tell if maybe it's just been a while since I played the demo or maybe Im crap, but parrying feels stricter to me. Otherwise pretty much in line with the demo so far, rock solid performance and scratching that Souls like itch.

This was totally off my radar as I've generally not got on with non-From souls-like games, but the SkillUp review has fully sold me on it. God, I'm weak.

harrypalmer Same here, the only non-From Souls-like game I saw to the very end was Wo Long and this looks like another contender, along with Lords of the Fallen next month

Get well soon mikeck and play that puppet-turned-boy!!! Played the demo part on the full game last night (up to the first boss). I'm still shit at parrying (no surprises there!) and cannot fathom what changes they put in the dodge, as it still feels kind of useless to me, but I like it and will stick with it
Edit: JuniorFE pointed out my "phantom" error, thanks son!

I think it's just more i frames. I haven't used it too much, trying to get better at parrying as I heard it becomes quite dependent on it in later sections. But having got to the P-Organ stuff (never not funny to hear it called P-Organ), I can see the upgraded dodge is being able to do another one immediately after which is good. I do like the approach to side quests too, if you have an item needed to complete one, an icon of the item will be marked on the closest Stargazer to the NPC you need to give it too. I actually struggled a bit against the Watchman in the demo and so I tried the friend that can join in and help mechanic and it basically turned on Easy mode. Aggro was constantly on him, took quite a few hits too, which just allowed me to wail on him from behind to do it on first attempt.

My fatigue with soulslikes puts me off, coupled with the linearity. For me it's one to get when I REALLY feel the urge for such an experience, which isn't now. It does look lovely though, and I'm happy it exists. I will definitely get it in the future, but yeah, sale probably.

So far, this may well be the most soulslike soulslike of all, albeit with a fascinating setting (not quite sure if it will pip Steelrising but the comparisons are obvious).
I was finding it surprisingly easy until the first proper boss absolutely trounced me. Ah well. A boss difficulty slider would be nice....

I did play the demo so had prior knowledge of how to beat it, but beat the first boss on the second attempt. Feels better with the improved dodge, but mastering the parry is going to be key.
At the hotel now, really enjoying it so far.

Got past the second named enemy you meet before switching off for, turns out that dodge rolling is a very viable tactic for some enemies. I was desperately trying to make parrying work against this enemy but then when combining that and dodge rolling did so much better and beat them.
I didn't really pay much attention to the parry mechanic in the demo, but the reward for perfect timing, as well quickly attacking to get health back from a standard parry makes for very satisfying combat.
It's not a From game (as much as it wants to be) but hot damn I'm having a great time playing this.

As a general recommendation here in early game, I would recommend dumping quite a bit of ergo into Vigor. Enemies hit hard in this game, parrying being a focus, may as well give yourself some vitality to compensate. You can always increase damage from upgrading your weapon.

Had a quick go at lunch and beat that first boss second time. It wasn't that tough but it does require you to perfect parry. I did that enough to beat him but don't feel I have it down at all.
It's certainly decent so far. I do love the whole weirdness of it.
