Well, I did not see MTG demanding everyone's ethics reports be released.
Do it.

lordofthedunce Having stuff to manage a few days on your own is just a good idea - people tend to forget the "crisis" bit and only focus on the "war". And yeah, pretty sure all new buildings here had to have shelters or a basement that could quickly be turned into one until pretty recently. We were weirdly hardcore about civil defence until the mid 90s. Seems sensible, frankly! National service was also a thing not that long ago, right? Purely anecdotal but I'd say most of my colleagues in the ambulance service around my age talk reasonably fondly of it. Maybe more fun in peace times...

Has the elongated muskrat thread been deleted? Search has nothing and I can't see it on the recently updated list.
Now I can't post that Dead Ringers on Radio 4 has Trump calling him his new wife "Elonia", which is just brilliant!

lordofthedunce It's still a thing, but it wasn't for a while. I was among the last generation to be called up (mönstring) in the late 90s, but very few actually had to do service (värnplikt) then and it stopped entirely sometime before 2010. The way things have been going slimming down the military hasn't exactly worked out, so mandatory national service was started up again in 2017. Many have civilian war postings though - I do, and I assume ambulance services do as well?

Just so I'm clear. Are we (or should be) gearing up for the cold war part 2 but with added nuclear bombs?

Not to distract from impending Fallout IRL, but to the surprise of absolutely nobody, Trump won so his hush money sentencing is basically dust (ready to be postponed, said to perhaps be as far as after his term is done, which might as well mean "never gonna happen")
Consequences? What are those, some sort of peasant joke that he's too "rich" to understand?

Linda does appear to be the only person with any remotely relevant experience of government or running anything And she’s got connections in the sector I suppose it’ll be an all out battle royal to see which kids get to be taught once Trump gets his wish to close the department.

Just so I'm clear. Are we (or should be) gearing up for the cold war part 2 but with added nuclear bombs? It doesn't take much to be reasonably prepared. The most important thing is that you can get away quick when it's necessary. If you still have to pack your shit for 10 minutes before you can go, you will be stuck in traffic with all the other people.
Also, it's better to go early, because you can always return if it's nothing. But you can only go late once, if it's real.

Yeah I think it won’t work like in the movies. Nearly all of us will be fucked, at best living in refugee type camps if the city you live in got nuked. Look how much carnage it is if there is a Black Friday sale or if just bp have a slight driver shortage or there is a bit of snow or if there is new virus. Actual nuke war its game over if you live in a nuke country.

If you live in an urban area which is close to a target you aren’t getting out in time and will just be hit in a traffic jam instead. Do all these people have second homes in the Lakes or your country’s equivalent too? Where are you supposed to go?!
If you survive the damage to supplies and infrastructure will do for you.
That said, I fully expect some bad stuff like the sabotage to pipelines we’ve already seen/are seeing and possibly some nasty assassination type stuff, but I fully expect Putin to mainly rattle his saber and wait for Trump to give him what he wants. I think this is now inevitably Ukraine’s fate sadly. If it survives as an independent nation it’s either smaller or a puppet.
Then we will need to see whether they want to roll further west but I highly suspect we’ll see a period of rest/wound licking from Russia before they even consider further attempts to grab bits of Europe. I think that last bit has been deliberate by NATO - basically it’s a bit of a proxy war where we can supply stuff to Ukraine to weaken Russia and kick the can down the road.
The theory of nuclear MAD has obviously been shown to be so much horseshit as a peacekeeping mechanism sadly.
Don’t forget also that China has no interest in seeing its trade partners turned to ash.

It's easy to get where you need to, just weave through all the piled up cars.
At high speed preferably.

MAD hasn't been shown to be horseshit...has anyone attacked a nuclear armed state? Apart from China and India randomly throwing bullets at each other over in mountains.

I think as far as direct warfare between Russia and NATO goes I don’t think we’ll see open conventional or nuclear war.
It’ll be infrastructure sabotage, cyber warfare and maybe assassinations. If Putin can be resisted by Ukraine for this long then surely he knows there’s no chance against a fully equipped NATO force. Unless the plan is to draw China out into a full on third world war.
Of course, if Russia can implode a major western bank, cut undersea communication lines or drastically restrict global flows of oil and gas then that will majorly fuck millions of people.

We've been at the hybrid war stage with Russia for years now but no one in power publicly says so.
It may get warmer but open conflict is still unlikely just yet.

Well, Ukraine has indeed attacked a nuclear armed state in its limited ways, but I suspect you mean ‘invaded’ so maybe a partial concession on my part. My point really is that Russia would have been rolled up by NATO by now if it wasn’t for those pesky nukes I guess. Doubtless at great cost, but I’d have been confident. That’s why I think the nuclear threat is not quite working. It’s actually allowing a bully state to operate in this case. The point was to prevent further wars in Europe.
