How do I know if it has 8GB of VRAM - whatever that is (I know nothing, clearly) Mate if you want a laptop with a GPU with 8gb of VRAM then you're not looking a for a cheap laptop, you'll be paying a fair whack for that, you're looking at something like a RTX3080 laptop. Not cheap. Yeah. I am beginning to think it's perhaps a bit of a pointless endevour for something that is essentially a whim!

Bloody hell it's confusing. For under a grand you can get probably a laptop with a RTX3050 which is 4gb vram, it won't run the latest games super fast but medium will be possible. You won't be getting 2TB of SSD either more like 256-512gb for that kind of price. 16gb ram is a maybe too, more like 8gb.

Okay. Cool. Yeah it's really for these indies that are grabbing my interest as opposed to the big AAA or AA bois. I'll maybe scour the small ads and see if I can hook a bargain. Folk seem to be selling gaming laptops fairly regularly.

You should probably think about why that is...

I think it's because people can't afford to pay for basic necessities these days.

Nah there have always been a steady stream of these things in the small ads. To be fair I've never known how people can afford to buy them in the first place. I couldn't dream of spunking that much money on something just to play games on it. Couple of hundred is my limit.

Quite probably.
Ah well. Like I say. It was a whim and I know nothing about PC specs so was just curious. Happy to leave it.

No, no you've enquired about a new laptop so you better fucking buy one now.

Anyone use a laptop for technical drawing, particularly REVIT use?
Trying to get our IT manager to get us some laptops instead of desktops so we can work remotely now and again - just wondered if anyone has any experience of technical drawing using laptops and if there's a decent brand/model you currently use.

Temperamental I think more than shit. They run hot and I think people are often disappointed in what they can run unless they've gone all out for one. A mid range one will be fine for indie stuff though I'm sure.

Don't think you get many corporate laptops with discrete GPUs and less likely to have gaming GPUs. They tend to be integrated unless it's for a specific task and require the extra grunt. Integrated can be ok for some indie stuff unless you want all singing and dancing 3d then, no! IIRC, an iGPU will carve off a chunk of the system ram as vram so 16gb will probably be best.
As an example, I use an old corpo laptop for a bit of indie gaming, an old HP zbook 17 g3. It came with a quadro and 2gb vram alongside a core i7, 16gb system ram and M.2 drive. Not exactly stellar but its running Tarkov on low 1080p when I don't fancy going on the main pc.
Just had a look on fleabay and it's around £400 so if you want better you already have a baseline budget

Got my laptop today. Really impressed with it (as i should be for the price) Bonkers that it outperforms my desktop with a 3090 which only a few years ago was a beast of a card

Well, that's a bit surprising. Especially because laptop performance is often held back by the CPU too. What's the TDP of the graphics?

Just checked and it's 175W.

Seems like the lowest model would be 80W. I wonder how slow that is. Though I'm not sure any laptop maker would bother with something like that.

What's the TDP of the graphics? 175w It's all completely stock at the moment but I think tomorrow I'm going to have a go at undervolting the system to try and get a bit more out of it. I was getting 110 average FPS at 4K in Modern Warfare 2 with DLSS set to performance. Will download a bunch of games tonight to play with tomorrow but overall, I'm happy and impressed with what this relatively small laptop can achieve.

So I applied a little undervolt to the CPU and a boost to the GPU Core/Memory clocks....
Running the same TimeSpy test the laptop scores 20,991 (22,321 for GPU and 15,696 for CPU) and the desktop scored 15,088 (18,511 GPU. 7368 CPU)

I guess the CPU in the desktop is a bit old? My Ryzen 3600 gets roughly 7000 in the test. It's more than enough for 60fps in modern games, but I figure any 13th gen Intel or Ryzen 7k would kick my ass easy.

Yeah it's an 9700k so if It really is coming towards the point where an upgrade would be due. Still chugging along nicely though

Moving again, so I'll be using the Ryzen 5500U and GTX 1650 laptop for a few months, at least until I find a permanent home and transfer my desktop there.
This thing can barely run Destiny 2 at 60fps, dropping to 40-50fps in busier activities, on 1080p and minimum settings... just to give an idea of what I'll be dealing with. Don't think I'll be playing PS5 ports anytime soon. Really wish I had bought a 16GB model, too.
Guess it's time to fish in the backlog pond. Relatively weak as it is, last gen ports tend to work pretty well on it, often at 60fps.

That's exceptionally good for a laptop. I honestly would've expected the 9700k to piss all over a mobile chip, which surely must be getting throttled.
I suppose it is going on for 5 years old, but still that's pretty mind-blowing.

I think modern laptops CPUs are getting much better. The 13950HX can boost up to 155W as needed, which is much higher than any Coffee Lake, even the top end ones. Of course, desktop Raptor Lake can go up to 275W so it's all relative.
Anyway, add in triple the cores and triple the L3 compared to the 9700K, and there is no way it doesn't severely outperforms it, even when throttled.
My Ryzen 5500U is very close in specs to the desktop Ryzen 3600, it can even get up to a decent 55W as needed, but it only has one fourth of the L3 and it really shows in actual games performance (not so much in benchmarks, but even the Timespy CPU score is 30% lower).

I suppose it is going on for 5 years old, but still that's pretty mind-blowing. I had a feeling the laptop would be a bit better but not to the point it is performing. Granted, it was flipping expensive but I'm really, really impressed with this laptop. Been playing Spider-Man and in silent mode it can easily handle it in 4K (3840x2400 so actually a bit more than 4K) with all the settings set to maximum and with DLSS (no frame gen) it's getting a decent 50-60fps and relatively quietly too. If I put it in my profile named 'beast mode' it gets quite loud but plays in actual 4K (using a TV) really well and sits around 110-120FPS Of course I could've built a desktop with a 4090 and still had a lot of change left over but a desktop doesn't currently work for my lifestyle at the moment so I'm really happy with the performance I'm getting out of this laptop considering the size.

Right, I need a new laptop. I want to use it for home recording and my future GIS side hustle, so RAM and a graphics card are a must. To that end I'm looking at gaming laptops, and I've whittled it down to a few likely candidates. I'm completely clueless as to specs these days, so any help on deciding between these is much appreciated. Other suggestions also welcome. Budget: $1500-$2000 (£750-£1000). Apologies for the eye-punishing webstore: www.pbtech.co.nz/product/NBKACN7157651BS/Acer-Aspire-A715-76G-51CN-GTX-1650-Gaming-Laptop-1www.pbtech.co.nz/product/NBKMSI87972/MSI-Katana-15-B12UD-156-FHD-144Hz-Gaming-Laptopwww.pbtech.co.nz/product/NBKACN5155854/Acer-Nitro-5-AN515-58-54XN-RTX-3050-Gaming-LaptopGaming is a secondary concern, although I would like to finally play GTA V, as well as my Steam library which was last added to in about 2014. Please feel free to mock me for my ignorance and stupid questions - if that's the price to pay for advice then so be it. Also, my weird caveat: whatever I get must be black, or dark in colour. I cannot abide light-coloured tech, so no white, silver etc. Please feel free to mock me about that too. Thanks in advance folks.

The MSI one is probably the best option, with the faster CPU. Probably ignore the first option and decide between the latter two, but yeah, I’d go MSI out of those.

You mentioned gaming being secondary, but if you do plan on gaming from time to time, the extra VRAM and support for DLSS3 could give you much better in-game performance.
