You mentioned gaming being secondary, but if you do plan on gaming from time to time, the extra VRAM and support for DLSS3 could give you much better in-game performance. Thanks again spookster. I figure that it was $400 more, but on offer for only $200 more and may be worth it. |

The GF63 Thin is out, I think. Watched a review very critical of the build quality that put me off. Considering weather spending a few hundred more might be worth it.

Ahh damn. I don’t know much about Acer’s build quality. Can you find something similarly priced from Asus or Lenovo? Their laptops usually get high marks.
I don’t want to recommend anything specific because the better the device gets the more the price rises.

Yeah, I'm doing what I always do now and creeping up the price brackets: 'oh this one is only $100.more and has DDR5, and this one is only $100 more that that and has an 13th gen...' If you can get that same Lenovo for $1899, that does sound like a great deal. I was gonna say the 4060 in the MSI you just linked is a noticeable upgrade in power, but then you’d be gambling with their quality control again. Lenovo’s a safe bet.

Lenovo have quoted me $2059 (inc delivery) for that laptop with a RTX 4060 and one of those leet multicoloured keyboard lights.
And the same configuration with a brighter fancy 1440p screen for $2109. Seems worth it...

Hahaha, thanks for your help man. TBF I've had my last one for about six years, so I get my money's worth from them. It sounds like a helicopter taking off when watching YouTube these days so it's time for retirement.
And that seems like a good price. $3300 RRP with the fancy screen, so over a third off. And although I have no idea about modern PC specs I guess I might be able to play some more modern games on it? Maybe Cyberpunk?

Cyberpunk should be doable as long as you utilize DLSS and don’t go crazy with the ray-tracing. Modern day nvidia cards are like witchcraft.

Obviously the LOQ is the same as before, but now with a 1TB SSD, which I figure is probably worth the extra $269 as a 512TB will be full before I even know it.
The Legion has a better screen, larger battery, faster RAM and an AMD CPU. And I'm led to believe the build quality will be a bit better. The only thing I'm not sure about is the CPU, how do AMD laptop CPUs stack up against intel? The 7840HS is very new and I can't find any real benchmarking.
If the AMD CPU is all good then I figure an extra $400 is worthwhile for what I get with the Legion.
Anyway spooky, I promise this is my last time pestering you about this. I really appreciate the help. If you ever come to NZ I'll buy you a beer, a mince and cheese pie, and I'll let you play Minesweeper with maxed out RT on whatever laptop I end up with.

Make it a round of Dead or Alive 2 on a Dreamcast emulator and you’re on. AMD Ryzen CPUs are very good these days, and they have excellent battery life to boot. It does go down while gaming, naturally, but for less intensive work like file editing or watching youtube, you get a good amount of juice on a charge. Mine has a 6800S, and I’ve no complaints on the performance side. I’d go with the Ryzen laptop for all the other hardware upgrades it entails. Also what have I done? I’m so sorry! |

This heat is really making a number on my laptop. I guess as a thin and light, it probably can't dissipate as well as a bigger laptop, but it's annoying that the GPU starts creeping up to 65-70 degrees even if I keep it a fair amount below TDP. In the last couple months, in the same conditions, it usually stayed below 60 degrees.
Also, it makes the room even hotter... I feel like I'm living in an oven. Damn attics.

Right, I've done it, I spent $3300 on a laptop. Forgive me spooky but I went with an even more expensive machine: Lenovo Legion Slim 5i, i7-13700H, 32GB RAM, RTX 4070, 1TB SSD. They knocked over $1000 off, and I figured it would be future-proof for a good few years, maybe not for gaming, but at least for recording and GIS shizz.
Credit card looks a bit dishevelled now though.

Yeah, I made a similar leap a couple of years ago. Once I made my peace with relative power vs. cost outlay, it was all fine. Occasionally have to sacrifice some detail to get the framerate I want, but I don't regret the move.

I gamed on laptop for 5 years and then still decided to go desktop for gaming when upgrading in 2017.
small screen, it useless as portable gaming device as need power from the wall so pretty much stayed glued to the desk 24/7 just like desktop would, loud and produced heat like crazy (good for Australian winter. home insulation is terribad here so nice way to warm fingers with 10 degrees in your room)
and took more space than my desktop.
as in i can move my keyboard away to watch movies and eat dinner or stuff. couldnt really do that with big laptop as it took most of my desk space.
of course no update option for laptop so when something broke in my gaming laptop it is trash as and it really is not worth sending it to technician. with desktop each part can be replaced so my 5 year desktop got second wind when i gutted it and put new mother, gpu, ram and cpu while selling old for few bucks.

Give me an ultrabook instead any day of the week and I can always just stream stuff to it if I want to play a game.

Speaking of streaming, has anyone tried Geforce Now at all and can they talk about the general experience? Yes, I tried the RTX 4080 tier and in all honesty, it was brilliant. I streamed on to my MacBook and must point out I do have full fibre broadband (500Mbs up and down) so my internet is decent but I was blown away by the experience. The only reason I cancelled is that I don't like playing on my MacBook and when I use my TV I am mostly playing on my consoles. I am no expert but it felt very responsive and the graphics were far better than I am used to with the consoles. Full RTX on Cyberpunk at 4k for example. Honestly would very highly recommend it and am always considering myself whether to just buy a Shield Pro and sign up to GeForce Now again! |

Well I just tried the free version at work which isn't the best connection and holy hell it's kind of amazing, so I've just convinced myself to try ultimate just for a month. My home has a much better connection though so it should feel even better.

I never really bothered doing that with my desktop but I do it a lot with my laptop |

Yeah, I have a thin and light 15” gaming laptop with an RTX 3070. Doesn’t get too warm on my lap when I play it away from the desk. There are other options than the big rainbow LED Alienware types these days.
