"For some reason the feedback from the screenings is that it's inexplicably short"

But think of how many screenings we can get through each day....

So apparently the new LOTR films will use "AI" to de-age existing cast members. Orlando Bloom and Ian McKellen have both said they've been approached to appear, and considering in the books the person who hunts Gollum is Aragorn, we've got to assume they want Aragorn actor Vigo Mortensen to appear in the film The Hunt for Gollum.
I imagine that this is some sort of Luke-in-Mando-style deep fake AI they're on about. They've certainly got a good data set with all the footage they shot making two trilogies. I'm interested to see how it plays out. I think Gandalf is slathered in prosthetics anyway so won't need it, and hopefully because Aragorn at this point is a fairly rugged looking bloke, smoothing out Mortensens's wrinkles and giving him a wig shouldn't be too arduous.
Bloom, with the best will in the world, doesn't look like he did in 2001 though. So we shall see.

It can’t be much worse than the weird plastic sheen everyone had by the end of the Hobbitses

I'm baffled by the decisions they made on the Hobbit. Not the creative ones, but the production ones; shooting in HFR and 3D. It gives the films such a different look to the original trilogy.
I think it's because Jackson didn't really have a core idea of how to handle it. He ended up making them more because fans and the studio wanted it, rather than having a fire under him.
Anyway. Need to rewatch them soon I think.

Should have just stuck with 2 movies instead of (really) dragging it out for 3.

It would have been a pretty great one film. But they wouldn't have made the nearly 3 billion that they did make.

Maybe they hunt for Gollum in one and Smeagol in the other?

Considering they announced two films initially but only named The Hunt for Gollum, maybe it was always two films?
To be fair, the actual hunt for Gollum in the books (as much as it's mentioned) takes place over decades, so - seeing as most of this film has up be made up, so to speak - so you could probably fill the running time if you wanted.
Although this is another one of those actor interview games of telephone, we don't really know what's going on. They announced two films in the first place, McKellen saying "I'm doing two films" might just mean Hunt for Gollum and something else entirely that they intend Gandalf to appear in.

I know they’re doing it because it lets them get more mileage out of established cinematic characters but its very much playing into the same trap Star Wars fell into of just colouring in around the margins of the existing stories with no real room for exploring anything new.
How could the Hunt for Gollum possibly end?! What peril and epic conclusion will we see?!
Lets check the existing 6 films that already give us the answer.

It's a bizarre choice of subject for one film, let alone two.
We know so much about Gollum and the most important parts of his life - his origin, his demise and his interactions with the ring. What else is there to tell? How do you add tension/stakes?
It's like Rogue One making an entire film about obtaining the Death Star plans - it's completely inconsequential, nobody asked for it and the stakes are minimal as we know the outcome.

Its a shame Tolkien only ever wrote about one very brief window of time in Middle Earth. It feels like a universe that could’ve had some real history and other stories given to it if he hadn’t been so half-arsed about it.

These things can be good if they’re more about the story, characters and journey. If that’s good then knowing the ending is irrelevant. If that was the important part then no one would ever rewatch a film. They stop making Shakespeare films and plays. I’d rather they made something that was a new story but gap filling is alright if it’s done very well and brings something new and a bit unexpected to it.

I agree with this to an extent - Godfather II is a prime example of a fantastic film where you know the ending of a character but it's still a great film in its own right. However, there was so much that was unknown about Vito that it was interesting to see his youth and rise to the top (not to mention the other half the film progressed the plot in the modern day). That's a far cry from building an entire film around a throwaway line from Star Wars, filling it with dull characters/plot an answering a question nobody really asked. What's left to tell of Gollum? All the important parts of his life have been fleshed out over the LOTR and Hobbit trilogy and the character is such a known quantity I struggle to think what they can do that'll be worth watching. Love Serkis and LOTR though so hope I'm wrong.

I'm very excited for it, but I agree that whilst they can do a lot of excitement and tension with the story, they can't do a lot of character development. All of Aragorn's arc is handled really well in LOTR; Gandalf more or less doesn't change till he dies. Even Smeagol doesn't really come out till Frodo encourages it. So from that point of view, it feels hard to find a story arc.
Re: only returning to the era of the movies; I believe (might be wrong) that they only have access to the Hobbit & LOTR, and the Tolkien estate doesn't want to sell any more rights. So they can't make a story about Ungoliant eating the trees of Valinor, or fall of Morgoth, of the children of Hurin, or anything like that.

Rumours of a sequel were denied earlier this week, but Sean Astin clearly wants it. Why must Hollywood do this to us.
