So open about it being a musical there's no songs sung in any of the trailers. With the exceptions of Blues Brothers, Phantom of the Paradise and Bugsy Malone I really don't get on with musicals. If I was tricked into paying to see one due to false suspect advertising in a trailer I would be more than a tad annoyed. I recall the trailers for Sweeney Todd were similarly devoid of musical numbers. Not a good sign if you don't have conviction and have to try and get people into theatres under false pretences, and it doesn't matter what was said when announced, most people don't follow movie news to that extent and the trailer is all they see.

Are the songs any good? Gaga can write an earworm if they’ve let her work on the soundtrack.
Although the last film’s big moment was all about Gary Glitter so I’m not sure if I trust them to make the write choices musically speaking.

The idea of "disguising" a musical in trailers is so common nowadays that it's effectively a trope. I've seen interviews with directors where they're slightly incredulous, but have been told explicitly by the marketing teams that putting songs in a trailer will damage their movie. It's so ridiculous that the trailer for Wicked - Wicked! - doesn't actually show anyone singing.
Off the top of my head, the only recent musical I can remember where you saw someone sing in the trailer was The Little Mermaid, and I imagine that it's impossible to hide the fact that one's got songs in it.

Yeah Sweeney Todd was infamously trailered without even a sniff of any songs, so that a good chunk of the first weekend audience were furious to have been tricked into seeing a musical.

I'm still amazed that most cinemagoers research into a movie begins and ends at the trailer they see in the cinema. If that.

I guess, if I'm to be generous, that it's quite tricky to cut a trailer with singing and songs in? I can't remember but I would guess that the Little Mermaid one probably ends with Part of Your World, which would make sense and work.
We watched Mean Girls (2024) this weekend, and I watched the trailer for that before sticking it on and had no idea we were about to watch a version of the Broadway show, rather than a straight up remake of the 2004 movie. Was a nice surprise.

I'm still amazed that most cinemagoers research into a movie begins and ends at the trailer they see in the cinema. If that. I like to know as little as possible about a film before going into it, and will avoid trailers where possible too. If it's a new film by a director I like, I'm likely to see it either at the cinema or home knowing as little as possible. I'll likely know (some of) the cast list and the basic premise, but that will be it. If it's a sequel to a film I enjoyed, I will generally go in blind. I often check RT or Letterboxd, or general discussion just to check if something is a dud or not (though will still watch something that intrigues but has low approval) but I like to find out what a film is all about by watching it, not reading about it in advance.

I’m sure you could cut a trailer for this that hides the fact its a musical and just sells it based on the horror tropes and the name of the director but its clear they know what people really want

I watched Sweeney Todd just because so had no idea it was a musical. Nothing against them but every song in that film was shit.

Yeah, also the Avengers 4k was the uncensored american version. Full Coulson stab. He got a nice visit to Tahiti at least. If the Blu-ray of Avengers replicated my cinema experience of seeing it, the film would crash about 15 minutes from the end, taking about ten minutes to get going again.

On the subject of musicals, Shannon Matthews: The Musical is coming to Prime in November. That is not a thing I was ever expecting to write.

Pretty inevitable after the success of Minus One on a tiny budget, the Oscar didn't hurt either.

More the same director/writer/VFX supervisor is getting the gig again being the news, not Toho making another Godzilla movie.
