This is probably going to sound like overkill, but when I do take a set apart I use those sealable freezer bags then go backwards through the manual putting all the pieces back into the correct bag, which I number with a sharpie. Makes sense. But do you ever use the pieces to build other stuff, freestyle?

We don’t, my kids prefer building with the basic boxes of standard blocks for messing about, too many esoteric parts in the kits for them

We've basically got 75% of the lego mario sets in our house on display and I woke up this morning with 5 year old mixing and matching them.
My heart sunk but as long as he's happy I guess.
Glad I've stuck the sets that I really like in a display though.

If you wanted to just build random stuff then I'd say have a look on marketplace/eBay for a job lot of random bits. Will probably cost less than a small set for a lot more options. It's what I'd do if I had kids, anyway. Mixing recent sets sounds like a nightmare if you ever want to sell them.
Our sets get dismantled and put into large freezer bags and stored in the loft along with the boxes/manuals. Would love to have all of the sets on display, but our house is too small.

Good shout on ebay for random pieces. Slightly regretting now that we didn't go down the freezer bag route but realistically we were never going to sell them on. It's more the hassle involved in finding every last bit of that god damn pterodactyl every time he wants to build it again.

Pretty much all the sets I buy are Collector's Series sets, so they're too pricey to break down into bits for free building. I do buy used pieces on eBay and Bricklink for other projects though, like this little dude:

It's a picture hosted by Imgbb.com. Are you behind a work filter that prevents access to some sites?
I'm afraid I'm not really the best person to ask about this sort of thing.

(it's ace btw!)

I've just spent a bit of time going through my Bricklink emails to get a pretty good idea of the total cost (bear in mind that this was nearly 7 years ago): total build was just shy of 55 quid. I bought almost all of the parts used to keep the cost down and most of the parts were literally just a penny or two each (just soaked them overnight in a bowl of soapy water and scrubbed them with a nylon brush to get them clean), with just a few of the rarer pieces bumping the price up. That circular 8x8 Dark Red tile for example cost me £26! Just checked eBay (Bricklink is down at the moment) and the only one I could find is going for £34, so it looks like it's still rare, unfortunately. Not particularly essential for the build, at least. If you fancy giving it a go - or at least pricing it up for yourself - the build instructions and part list are available here: arvobrothers.com/pdf/chestburster/

I went through a phase of building various stuff, sometimes with plans of the web eg this cute fella:
Built al-sorts back in the day looking through my old photos, don't seem to have the energy/will these days, also a fair bit of my Studio Lego has yellowed. Some on here might recall on the old forum I had a display in a window for quite a while and all of it got yellowed, I did manage to get it back to white but it's generally gone yellow again now.

Undeniably impressive in scale but space for sets of that size for so many (not mentioning the price) you think would limit the market but then so many families love marvel superheroes so I can see it doing well!

I'm not that impressed to be honest. Its massive and looks great, but the interior is massively lacking. For the price I'd expect a lot more details and play space.
I know that would increase the size (and price tag) beyond their practical limits, but a few tiny rooms just ain't cutting it. Even the ch'tauri flying whale/shark looks terrible.
Perhaps I'm just being cranky

No idea what I've done here, it's supposed to be an image of the pac man set but it's not displaying. You'd think by 40 years of age I'd know how to share an image on a message board. Might as well stick me in a home.

Right click on the image and open in new tab so you can see the .jpg extension. Then use that as the link.

The question mark was a fun build.
I've spent a fair few quid on the Marvel mini figures, so I could just get Wolverine, Storm and Beast. So far I've had none of them.. this is where you give up and go on ebay. I tried to use the codes that have been supplied by a few sites, but I can never match them up.

I don't want them that much to be weighting blind boxes in the shop

At least with the plastic/foil bags, you could attempt to feel something.

The new packaging means I won't bother with any more, and just order minifigures from a knock off site

Millennium Falcon surely?!
Or failing that Rivendell!
Either @ 40% off and you’ll make money selling them 2nd hand!

Also I think Lego stores sell them separately.. just remembered that, but it’s a major trek for me.
