Wonderful news! Another playthrough of 1 & 2 is on the cards, I think. As good as the remasters were, I think I'll be firing up the Amiga for some authentic nostalgia

I'm all for impressive ports on inferior hardware, but given the choice I'd definitely not play the Amiga version of MI2. It's missing too many of the music tracks, and there's no iMuse for the remaining ones.

This is very exciting. Adored the Monkey Island games. I do have a soft spot for the third one, as it was the first I played and going back to the pixelated earlier ones after the gorgeous cartoon artwork was tough for young me, but they are all fantastic.
Should really play the older games again; don't think I have done for 15 years or so.

This is incredible! I hope they all come out on Switch, as to me that is the perfect way to play adventure games these days.

Amazing news, I recently replayed 1 & 2 at Christmas (god knows how many times I've played them!). I liked Curse, but it was missing something that 1 & 2 had and I was always disappointed that they ignored the ending of 2. I can't wait, although it has a lot to live up to and part of the allure was wondering what might have been. The amount of fan theories and speculation surely means it's almost impossible to give everyone a satisfactory payoff. Either way, this is something I never expected and I actually feel really excited at the thought of playing as old Bogbrush again! Curse still happened apparently Very curious to see how that plays out.

I like all the games, even Escape. I think Escape gets a bad rep because it went to 3D and the monkey fighting was a complete ball ache, aside from that the humour was all there.

Maybe most of the third game happened, but Guybrush never married Elaine at the end, and we start after having escaped the Carnival of the Damned (again). I'm working on the assumption that they are not ignoring Curse, but will probably ignore Escape, as things would be... very difficult otherwise. Besides, it's not like Escape has many fans around.

As described elsewhere, I never completed this one as we didn’t realise you only had to “draw” the fights rather than winning. We kept restarting, and eventually gave up, only learning the truth years later when we no longer owned the game.

Super excited by this, the first two games remain my favourite games of all time. This has potentially pipped Lego Star Wars as my most exciting game of the year.
As for where it stands in continuity, Devolver have said it's a sequel to Monkey 2 and Gilbert has implied it's not removing Monkey 3 from canon, so I guess it's an "interquel" between those two games.

Yeah, this was a pleasant surprise. Think I might replay the full series now, actually. Been a long time since I've booted any of them up.

I'm sure I read somewhere years ago that Gilbert had said if he was to make another Monkey Island he would call it 3a or something and it would pick up directly after part 2 in the carnival and that the true secret would be revealed as he had a rough idea of what the game would be. I guess an interquel would work in that scenario with a few tweaks.

He did indeed, and I always assumed that any new Gilbert-approved Monkey game would retcon everything he wasn't involved with, like a modern sequel to a 40-year-old horror movie. However he said on Twitter something about how MI3 wasn't being retconned and that Murray was a character in the game, not just a gag in the trailer. So maybe he's softened his stance somewhat. I'm going to be very controversial here and say that none of the sequels have felt sufficiently Monkey-ish to me (apart from the first sequel, obviously; I mean the later, non-Gilbert ones). Monkey 1 & 2 have more of an edge to them, a bit more bite; they don't strike me as being particularly cartoonish, whereas the later games really leaned into the colourful cartoon overtones. The first two games are also more surreal and weird, like Terry Gilliam interpretations of pirate tropes. So - a bit like how I felt about the Star Wars expanded universe - a wholescale slicing of the two "timelines", so to speak, appealed to me. But none of that matters; I just want more Monkey Island.

Even back then, he said that he was "not above stealing ideas that worked". I always assumed that even a proper MI3 (not that I ever expected one) would still take a few elements from CMI, since it was well received by fans overall. Anyway, if Murray is just a head, then it can't be an interquel, since he gets blown up in the intro by your cannon. I guess it's posible that the game will use a similar intro to CMI, before going its own way.

What are people's thoughts on the TellTale games? I can't remember a thing about them and not sure if I even played through more than 1 or 2 of them.
Think a replay of the series is definitely in order, although not sure whether it will bother including 4 or Tales.

I got bored and stopped playing at the start of the third or fourth one. The Trial of Guybrush I think.

I wouldn't bother, it's like the difference between watching Monty Python and having someone quote Monty Python at you. The actual puzzles are a bit dull and the only "humour" involves "do you remember this funny moment from the previous games"

Try playing the Steam version of "Escape From..." on Windows 10 at anything approaching a decent resolution. Hint: Good fucking luck.

I tried playing Escape again (after twenty years) just a few months back. The thing that bothered me most was the production value. How did they go from this to this? That and the humor really wasn't any good. Felt more like bad Saturday morning cartoon. Mind, I had to stop pretty early because of a game-breaking bug in Lucre Island. No big loss, I guess. The interface seemed worse than in Grim Fandango somehow.

Is Tales worth playing? I’ve never tried it, partly because it’s so fucking ugly.

Tales is okay. It has a sluggish start and the first episode in particular feels a bit 'bargain bin'. But... it definitely picks up, has a pretty decent story, and some good characters. I'd say its worth it as a fan.

I genuinely think this might be the game I'm most excited about. It's basically this, Starfield and then hypothetical big budget unannounced stuff like a new Elder Scrolls and GTA.
It's bloody brilliant news and yet can't possibly meet 25 years of expectations.

13 years since the monkey island special editions came out. 25% of the bundle on steam right now. Christ that makes me feel old I loved the original so much, although I got stuck on the ship with the lazy crew and never progressed. The SE, where I could cheat, allowed me to quickly progress past that but then I got bored shortly after. I’m still really hyped for this game as I actually completed Talesand this seems to be a continuation, but I worry my patience for these sort of games is long gone

I never finished Tales.
The controls didn't help and it didn't feel like a real Monkey Island game other than a few bits here and there that were callbacks. There were a few things I really didn't like and things like mermaids and big whales felt out of place.
I think I left it around chapter 3. Perhaps I should go back to it but I wasn't having any fun, it felt like a chore to play for me.
