I've told this story before, but I love Golden Axe so much I owned a Golden Axe arcade cab for a while. Even so, I'm extremely skeptical they can pull of a new game well - especially after the absolute travesty that was Beastrider. Some things are best left to the past.
Hyped to see how they handle JSR and Crazy Taxi, but based on the clips we've seen I'm already less enthusiastic about SoR and GA.

"For a while" suggests you're some sort of fool who only used to own a Golden Axe arcade machine

Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio don't seem to be straying far from the originals, I hope they don't make the same mistake that a lot of the PS2 Sega Ages 2500 made and include original versions alongside their updated/rebooted versions. Having the original versions at least eases the pain somewhat. Golden Axe just looks ugly and weird, maybe lean away from realism next time and go back to the source for something that looks more like anime and illustrations from the late 80s. I just don't think fur underpants fantasy can work with those character designs rendered and lit realistically. I'd love a game that looks like 80's fantasy. I don't think I've ever seen one in modern times. I wonder how it should be done like in 3D. In the context of some sort of new Golden Axe title like beast riders they'd have to pad it somehow, light Metroidvania and action RPG elements would get it somewhere into the 8-15 hour mark, it depends on how much money they've got to spend, I don't think a full open World is necessary but you need to include a bit of spectacle, it would be nice to see the village on the turtle's back for instance, as a 2D 16-Bit belt scroller that could never be done justice visually but in an update we can actually have the turtle moving, even incorporate that into gameplay.
Visually more of a flat shaded illustrative style would work, it's no accident that you could swap enemies between Fist of the North Star and Golden Axe very easily without anybody noticing. The trailer looks like a complete abomination because even if you're not aware of it you can feel that it doesn't fit with the original style. Grab all the surviving production sketches and art, a stack of 70s and 80s Conan comics and any similar manga and anime, that's where your art style and inspiration will be coming from.

Yeah, I'm a bit skeptical of Golden Axe and SOR but it looks very early days on those. SOR will have some trouble topping SOR4. Honestly I'm absolutely chuffed at this announcement - I really miss the 'old' SEGA and anything that's even a close proximation to their heyday is welcome by me. It's made my day. I loved Sega back in the day, but I think their games were so firmly rooted in the arcade tradition and the mechanics that went with that, that it is very difficult for them to make relevant games today. Of course SoR4 leaned into that, and there is a little moment for things like that right now. But they’re kind of Indie+ type things. I’m not sure they will ever get back to AAA proper games again.

The one Im most excited about is Shinobi. Those games evolved from the arcade into something really cool and it looks like it might have made a leap even further into being a proper metroidvania which would be awesome.

I really liked a couple of the MD ones but I’m not sure what they evolved into beyond that.

Just happy they are trying, even happier if they do some blue sky arcade racers next.

I'm happy to see something coming for these franchises, after spending a few years of my working career at SEGA and having worked on a joint US/UK project to try and reboot some of these about 8/9 years ago.
Wish I still had some of the pitch documents for what was going through the greenlight process at the time. There was a Streets of Rage vertical slice which was very violent, and lots of destructible environments, then a vertical slice of Golden Axe where the defeated enemies didn't disappear so there were piles of corpses littered about the level. There were plans for other titles too, all in a shared universe together with a proof of concept worked on by a pretty well known comic writer.
Gutted we never managed to get it greenlit.
So, I'm really stoked to see these announcement, fingers crossed for some quality releases!

I really liked a couple of the MD ones but I’m not sure what they evolved into beyond that. Shinobi 3 is still amazing tbf, one of the best games on the Megadrive imo, with nearly unparalleded graphics on the platform and a cracking soundtrack to boot. As for the later games, while I know it's marmite, I very much enjoyed the PS2 Shinobi game. It feels kinda unwieldy at first, and it trades the straight platforming for fast combat-based movement. But if you can get into the flow, it's very satisfying to power up your sword until you can one-shot bosses (which was in fact necessary for the highest rank). And the 3DS entry, which I'm pretty sure is the last game in the series so far, is an overlooked gem if you ask me. It's a pretty different kind of game, it keeps the platforming of the Megadrive games but the combat is almost entirely based on parry and reposte. It works very well. An impressive effort from a developer that mostly worked on licensed superhero games for handhelds.

I don’t really understand why they are spending time and resources to do an inferior streets of rage to SoR4, a game which only came out a few years ago!
But yeah, Shinobi is one of my favourite franchises and I’ll be looking forward to the version show here.

"For a while" suggests you're some sort of fool who only used to own a Golden Axe arcade machine It's actually even worse than you think. During a house move I came to the realisation that I had nowhere to put the cabinet in the new place, so made the last-minute decision to leave it behind. Yes, I gave a Golden Axe arcade cabinet away - for free - to the new owners of our old house. What an absolute fool. It probably went in the bargain papers the day they moved in. I have regretted this rash decision every day for nearly 20 years. Sometimes I still lie awake at night cursing my casual stupidity.

Booting those potion guys was basically the hardest and most important bit of the game. With your very lackluster looking little boot animation. They should just make that the new game. Booting very small potion guys.

Everyone looking forward to Shinobi should try out Shadow Gangs. A brilliant modern take on the formula.

I can’t believe I trawled through the steam games that had the word shadow in them to find it for the joke. I actually searched Freddie Mercury first.

That trailer mentions other games planned, anyone got any preference what that might be?
Wouldn't mind some sort of daytona/sega rally compilation.

I think they announced everything that was rumoured, unfortunately. I can image the ‘more’ part being other games if some of these announced titles are a success.

Just get M2 to remake Outrun 2006 with really robust online multiplayer options.
I'd buy a copy for a every single format. Twice over.

The only sad thing about being excited for this is that on a fairly regular schedule Sega would just pump out brand new games that would become franchises. And they just don’t really do that any more. And I think I miss that.
It’s almost certainly the death of the arcade that did it, as there’s no breeding ground for those instantly satisfying game experiments. But man alive it’s gutting, and I’m not even a Sega fanboi (DC4Lyf), that it’s just echoes of that era that excite.

Good point. I think it was. These are definitely games they can keep pumping out every 6 months if they are all in development at the same time. Not one of them looks like it’s trying to be a cinematic blockbuster high budget title. As long as they get the same love and care that Streets of Rage 4 did, they should be able to stagger the releases of these games quite nicely.
Nintendo tends to sit on finished games for months before release, in order to stagger their own software release schedules. Sega could easily do the same with these.

Arcade racers have never really gone away so some sort of Outrun game is a certainty if you wait long enough.
Sega should gather up all the stuff that's been done by M2 into some sort of ultimate arcade collection, the Megadrive collections have been done to death and nobody wants Megadrive Space Harrier, Galaxy Force and Afterburner.
