I guess maybe they didn't have time to make a bunch of unique high quality assets, considering their first attempt was scrapped and they had to restart from scratch. Reminds me of what happened with Halo Infinite too, which looks very generic in comparison to the previous games and only had one biome, again because of time constraints.
Still, reviews seem decent, and a lot of people are saying (surprisingly) that the gameplay loop is quite fun. Might have to grab it myself eventually.

Yeah the hub world definitely has a mod feel to it at times but I'm definitely enjoying it so far.

Wow, they were late with that one. ElAnalistaDeBits hadn't covered it either, so I thought it might just get overlooked like Star Ocean The Divine Force was, but at least that one had a pre-release demo.
Cliff notes: PS5, Series X and PC versions are identical. Series S lacks 60fps option at the moment. Switch game looks like a Switch game.

Moved to the 2nd map and it feels better designed than the first map.
Played about 6hrs and really enjoying it. Sonics leveled up to the point that most enemies only take a couple seconds to destroy.

Really crappy that there is no 60fps on Series S. As a general rule, anything the One can run at 30fps, the S can run at 60fps. But I guess they wanted to focus on the next-gen details.
Hopefully they will change their mind later?

Doesn't seem like it. Of course, doesn't mean Sonic Team couldn't work on it regardless.

This game is all over the fucking place. It’s like they took every popular game of the last 5 years, threw them all at the wall and scraped off what’s left and haphazardly glistened out a Sonic shaped poo into the remains.
I’ve only been playing for about ten minutes and I’ve already lost track of what collectibles mean what. I’ve got spiky hearts and also pink hearts and cogs and keys and there’s sparks and also weird little bugs and red rings and purple coins and seeds and tokens and some other stuff.

Is the pop in really as bad as reported?

I just got the little trail move where you hold Y and make a circle that unveils rings and hearts and things. I'll admit I don't know what everything does either. I tried to S rank the first stage you're dropped into, but I was down by like 3 second even while boosting the whole way, so I gave up. Grinding and bouncing around the open zone feels nice though.
I was fine playing the first stage at the default 4K30 mode, but as soon as I got to the open island, flipped it to 60 and that feels how a Sonic game should be played.

Oh and to quickly comment on the pop in, like gremmi, I just started so I've not seen any yet. The opening area, while open, is sort of funneling you through at the moment so it's pretty much showing you what it wants you to see so far.
I've also watched the reviews and such though, so I'm sure it's there, but maybe as I progress and the game fully opens up. ATM it's fine though.

I just watched that DF video and the pop-in looks unforgivable. I had assumed that on PC there'd be a setting to expand out the draw distance at least, but no. Same issue. Without the pop-in I think I'd drop the £40 odd on the Steam version, but instead I think I'll wait for a modder to sort it.

Just got past the tutorial to the opening up of map. They did a camera pan through and you could see the grass and leaves on a tree fill up as the camera passed, so I guess this is where the pop in begins. Gonna make some coffee then continue later.

Took a break for breakfast and shower. Might take one now for lunch too, but I'm enjoying it. Running around the island and grinding all the rails feels like a Sonic theme park. Combat could be a bit better I suppose, but it leans into the whole Sonic was inspired by Dragon Ball aspect. It feels like a wacky anime fight.

I'm on the second island and I think this could be my game of the year. I think it's probably the closest thing to Breath of the Wild in the sense that it's just really fun to traverse the field and explore. Also some Mirror's Edge there, where it's satisfying to do a great run of just boosting, wall jumping, grinding, homing onto balloons and bumpers, all of that. It's a blast. The comparisons seem to come up in every review, but this really is the best 3D Sonic has been since the first Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast.

I mean, Sonic games are always divisive, so I can't speak to another person's enjoyment or experience. Even the positive reviews seem to be in the 7-8 range. But I don't know, it's really doing it for me, in a way that other 3D Sonics like Unleashed and Colors didn't. It is a bit of a collect-a-thon, although the collectibles come in abundance so it doesn't seem that bad IMO. The cyberspace zones are at least on par with Generations. I don't know, I'm having fun.

Yeah I've 100% the first island and about 90% the 2nd.
Not sure it will hold up 3 more maps unless they start mixing up missions more.
I suck at parrying when playing as Super Sonic.
I've leveled sonic up and unlocked all the moves so combat is quick and easy now and all flows really smoothly.

I was having trouble with parrying the Kronos Island boss as well. He kept betting that big smack away on me, and it was pissing me off that the camera was facing against me with no ability to move it around to avoid the subsequent swats... until I noticed, when I had him down to about 25% life with only 100-ish or so rings left, that you don't need to time your parries. Just hold LB and RB when you see him telegraph the big swing, and Sonic will parry it and trigger his special move, which takes off a big chunk of the boss' life bar. Much more than just mashing X did.
Haven't faced the second boss yet so I'm not sure what its attack patterns are like, but I imagine the "just hold down the parry buttons" technique still applies.
Although to be clear, I'm playing on High Speed mode rather than Action mode, so I'm not sure if the combat is effected by that early choice.

On the 3rd island.
Got used to Super Sonic and destroyed the 2nd boss. Enjoyed the whole battle more than the first.

I've gotten stuck on one of the cyberspace stages. Don't remember if it was 2-1 or 2-7. But there's a bit where you're supposed to go up a spiraled tower and the floor falls out from under you. I can't seem to run fast enough before it collapses, even while holding boost the entire time. So that's kind of stopped my playthrough dead.

Couple of Cyberspace levels I'm going to come back to later but remember you don't need to complete them to finish the main story as you can get the keys for emeralds in the open world

Make sure you aren't pressing boost when jumping. You need to press it as you start running.

I've tried both ways and I'm still not fast enough. Maybe I need to level up my speed stat more or something.

Stats don't count in Cyberspace. Just tried again and it's much easier to boost jump over the 2 platforms and then hold boost again after you land then on the 2nd part you have that little area to boost from.. imgur.com/a/y5a29UM

That little jump boost on the first bit makes a big difference.
