I appreciate that the latest digital foundry video uses science to explain that Starfield doesn’t look as shit as Fallout 4 or Skyrim. youtu.be/jHlYqI8QasU

I downloaded Skyrim to the PS5, to see how it looks on my first 4K Shiny TV, and it does look pretty great, actually. Hopefully they’ll do a similar upgrade patch to Fallout 4, which looks terrible.
Pretty weird when a PS3 game looks better, has better textures than a PS4 game.

Desperate for a Fallout 4 PS5 upgrade. One of my favourite PS4 games that.

Is it likely to get a current gen upgrade? The Skyrim remaster happened yonks ago and is presumably where most of the visual improvement comes from. Didn't think Fallout 4 was that popular. Fallout 3/New Vegas never got any attention from Bethesda beyond the FPS bump on Series X

They probably don't want a remastered Fallout 4 to compete with FO76.

Who knows? Maybe they put the team doing Skyrim Anniversary onto Fallout 4 as soon as that was out, and will bump it up to make up for the fact that they won’t have a new Fallout game out until 2077. They also have a chance to sell the game again with the fan-made bits and bobs.

Just get Obsidian to make another one damnit. They're both owned by Microsoft now, it could happen!

I could see them doing it if revenue from FO76 crumbles completely and they have literally nothing else to push out the door, but I wouldn't be surprised if FO76 has made them more money over time than FO4 despite the horrid reception it had on launch. They may not have a new one in the pipes for a long while, but they still have an actively supported Fallout product on the market.

I can't see FO4 getting an upgrade, there's a reason why Skyrim has because it's so goddamn popular, FO4 never really achieved that kind of pop culture popularity that Skyrim did.

What’s the state of play with FO76 these days?
Haven’t played since it launched, where I quite enjoyed it to a point, but content was sparse.

It’s fine tbh. Not anything spectacular but there’s a fairly decent storyline running through that you can quite happily solo. To all intents and purposes you can treat it like a regular FO game and never touch any of the building/MMO stuff.

Did they ditch the survival stuff or is that still shoe-horned in?
Might download it tonight and have a potter about.

I bought Dust with a friend to tick the survival base building itch we have.
Could Fallout 76 be better? I did love F4 and all it’s base building stuff too.

Tried Fallout 76 with a couple of friends during some free week it did. It really is garbage. Some environments are nicely made, but it is filled with absolutely bugger all. If you thought the previous Fallouts were barren, wait until you see these communities with literally 2 or 3 people inhabiting them. Then the quests you do are the most bog standard "go over there, kill some thing/press some button/collect some items". There is very little context and any that is there is the most perfunctory it could be.
I can only imagine that they thought other people would create the fun, because they some how managed to make the most boring Bethesda game they have ever made. In some ways, it is quite an achievement.

What I found with their previous Elder Scrolls and Fallout games was that, after a certain amount of play, whatever keys they jangled in front of you was just a thin veneer over extremely shallow writing, gameplay systems, and balancing. An attempt at a second play through always just highlighted how hollow the experience was, but it was quite something else that you could get a hundred hours out of it before succumbing to that.
With 76, though, they didn’t even bother with the veneer, it’s only the hollowness. The combat is all dead easy and uninteresting, even compared to their past efforts. At least when Fallout 4 launched there were tons of enemies, and I found it a lot of fun as a shooter / challenge, but they ultimately patched 80% of the enemies out of the game or had them spawn already dead. (I suspect this was all because someone complained about the frame rate in Corvega, so their solution was to remove the best part of the gameplay).
I’ve never really been invested in Elder Scrolls, but I played the original Fallout RPGs, and just the fact that Bethesda dumbed it down to some nothingburger circle of hell… at least we got New Vegas. It’s such a waste of a perfect IP though, stuff like The Outer Worlds just doesn’t have the same perfect mix of tone that Fallout has within it.

Don't know how trustworthy this is, given that the source is some guy on YouTube, but:

It's probably quite a safe claim as that footage is likely to be a year old by the time the game releases.

Don't know how trustworthy this is, given that the source is some guy on YouTube, but: Taking a cynical view of that (but one based on nearly 20 years of experience with Bethesda games): This is exactly the same thing we heard about going from Gamebryo to the "Creation Engine". Creation wasn't a major rewrite or improvement on the Gamebryo variant they used before it, it was the same engine with some updates to rendering and some other bits bolted on. All their iterations of Gamebryo/Creation have used Havok and the same kind of animation system. They've been polished up over time and I expect this one to be largely the same, but this doesn't sound like a big change. Radiant AI has been around since Oblivion and has been hyped before every game since then. This sounds like at best they've tinkered with it and maybe made some improvements. Nothing specific that's new here. Radiant Story has been around since Skyrim. It's the system that gives you a map marker somewhere and spawns an object to retrieve or an enemy to kill. It's nothing special or unique and Fallout 4 used it *horribly*. What does this mean? Okay but what the fuck does that actually mean, Todd? I expect there to be some improvement. Rendering in general looks pretty nice in the trailers, things like LOD for distant objects seems okay. Maybe they've tinkered with the animation system and come up with some better ways of doing Radiant quests or made the AI react in more ways. That's all good obviously. But I see nothing new here and no specifics about improvements that can be interpreted as more than incremental upgrades to the engine.
And I wouldn't be the least surprised to see the same Gamebryo/Netimmerse engine bugs that have been in all their games since Morrowind.

Maybe get some people to write some quests instead of generating them all with an AI.

It isn't particularly clear if the article is actually referencing what is on the video or if it is just giving the bullet point features of the engine. If it is actually referencing what the video is saying (can't be arsed to watch the 13 minutes to find out) then we can safely assume this leak is arse. Nothing said there is new to Starfield.
