"This could be a hidden gem of a game..."
Thank god IGN is here to fish it out of obscurity for us.

I can’t wait for the day when standing still being talked at by characters with such dead eyes is interesting and fun.

All I care about is that it has an assassin's guild story line.

Can't wait to open a door and find the physics is still attached to the framerate as shit explodes all over the place.

If it has an equivalent to the Scrolls of Icarian Flight in the first 10 minutes I'll forgive it any other flaws.

At least the characters faces don't look like their poo pincher is grappling with a length of rebar anymore.

I was really hoping the opposite would happen. With MS claiming they wouldn’t be joining Sony in raising game prices, I was hoping they’d instead make Activision lower their prices to $60. I’m so naive.

I guess if you're on Gamepass it makes no difference. Although I imagine that will experience a price increase soon.

But still, wait a couple of months and most games are available for less.

It's interesting watching what's happening in the industry, which feels increasingly like AAA games are a rarity. Maybe it's rose-tinted spectacles but it sure felt like, back in the day, there was a much more steady flow of "big" games from Sony and MS, as well as multi-platform titles like FIFA and COD.
The only new game I've paid for outright this year is Elden Ring; Game Pass has sustained me but I don't feel like I really get invested in games in quite the same way. Could be that I'm just getting old and that I don't enjoy it quite as much as I used to, and that time pressures mean I can't sink as much into games, but I feel like I tend to dabble in games that often feel quite superficial.
There are some very rare exceptions over the past 18 months - Control had me hooked, I thoroughly enjoyed Gears 5, Borderlands 3 was a hoot, Halo Infinite was an absolute blast while it lasted, and of course Elden Ring.
Maybe fewer - higher quality - AAA is the way forward. I don't mind paying a bit extra because, in the round, I'm probably paying significantly less than I was even 5 years ago.

But still, wait a couple of months and most games are available for less. I know these companies are all so big that actual game sales don’t make difference to their profitability but I am curious about who is buying AAA titles at full price now £60-70 is the norm. I guess something like COD or FIFA will always move units but the more gamey titles? We all know that most of them will end up in a sale about 3 months later. Although I suppose with consoles locking in as digital only the ability to shop around is being erased so anyone who can’t wait has no option but to pay full whack. We must be close to the point where people are going to largely stop buying full price titles though, especially with fuel bills and the recession coming.

There really is a dearth of new games. Considering it is Christmas, there are hardly any games. There used to be so many games coming out at Christmas, something for everyone, kids, family, shooters, space games, rts. I'm not saying that all the games were great but there was a choice. It could be a case of rose tinted glasses but there is a shockingly poor output these days.

There has been loads of AAA games out recently. All the usuals with their sequels plus a few others.

With the global cost of living crisis especially, can't help but think bumping game prices up to £70 will backfire or kill off alot of AAA releases.
Despite loving videogames for 30+ years I just refuse to pay. Gamepass has given me a new love for the likes of FIFA.. but in the same breath there's zero chance I'm paying £70 for the latest installment. Especially for the likes of FIFA knowing how much FUT makes EA and how they were floating the idea of even making it FTP through making so much bloody money.
When my bills and mortgage are through the roof, £70 is a decent meal out with the Mrs.
So when the makers of Callisto Protocol, a game I've followed since its announcement make a cheaper launch edition of the game to buy day one before the reviews kick in, then bump up the price afterwards they just make me wait for its inevitable drop onto Gamepass.

There is peer pressure to have the newest shit, so that you can talk about it and be a cool kid. If you buy the hot game 3 months later, everybody has already moved on to the next big thing, and you are outdated and uncool.
That is about the only kind of buyer I can imagine, besides just hardcore fans of an IP that don't really care about the price anyway.

Anyone paying £60 for a game for their kids because they can’t wait a few weeks or so for a sale isn’t likely to be put off by it being £70 instead.

Feels like a consequence of having so much more power to work with and the demand for everything to be shinier and better than ever. Like, I imagine making so many 4k textures and massive poly-count models, as well as the music, requires a massive investment of time and cash. Sure, dev tools have advanced massively too but it feels like the cycle has become significantly elongated, and that devs and publishers take fewer risks as a consequence.

TBF that doesn't really apply anymore with games that are popular with kids, sure you have your FIFAs and CoDs but the majority of games that kids are going to play are free to play so they are really the people buying this stuff at this price point.

They take fewer risks and they seem to care even less these days of putting out a polished product which is very hard to take when they do charge 70 quid. That's the thing about the £70 price tag. I have bought a few games at this price (with some discount credit to help) but at least they have been very polished. GoW:R, Returnal, GT7 and R&C were all very well put together with barely any glitches. If I spent £70 on Fallout 4 when it was released I would have spat the dummy out. With Starfield, I would expect to be a bit of a jankfest to start with so I would definitely be waiting a week or two to see how bad the fallout is. Also £50 in 1998 is the equivalent of £100 today. If you can't understand why game prices are going up, well, there you have it. Edit: This is why Elden Ring deserves all the praise it gets. £50 and a ridiculous amount of content. It was certainly a bit iffy on PC though to begin with.

I think it's more difficult to optimize a low poly model than it is to model a high poly model. Textures are also easier to make than ever with lots of useful algorithmic generators for them.

The mission structures sound interesting. I like the idea of being given a whistle stop tour of the factions via the main story, so you can make an informed decision when deciding your allegiances.
More than anything, I'm massively looking forward to playing an original western RPG. I don't know the last time I could even say that! Even games like Elden Ring don't really offer a full fat RPG experience.
That said, I'm starting to get a bit worried that Bethesda are still releasing these heavily curated "chats", rather than new gameplay footage.
I also wish there was a VATS-like system in the game, to make combat more strategic, but it looks like combat is unfortunately standard FPS shooting... An odd choice, considering Bethesda's most high-tech, futuristic setting so far, which would naturally lend itself to all sorts of combat tech.
I suppose there's still potentially 6 months development left, and Bethesda do tend to keep their cards close to their chest, so there may still be a lot of unannounced gameplay systems and mechanics.

I'm hoping for a better The Outer Worlds. I quite enjoyed that, but it was a bit middling. Space exploring is fun, so the fallout(ish) in space was great. Sadly all the character animations etc were very much fallout3/NV-esque.

Despite some concerns that plague their games I'm still really looking forward to it. The one thing I'm most disappointed about is that it seems to be only humans, I was really hoping for a diverse alien world ala Mass Effect. Or at least like Skyrim.

The one thing I'm most disappointed about is that it seems to be only humans, I was really hoping for a diverse alien world ala Mass Effect. Or at least like Skyrim. As much as I adore things like Star Trek TNG and Mass Effect, I've always found the concept of humanoid English-speaking aliens a bit silly. As tempting as it would have been to make a bombastic space opera, it's something we've all seen before. I like that Bethesda have opted for a more realistic, gritty, and grounded take on human space exploration.
