Currently trying Doom Eternal. It's actually a really fun. And am enjoying the ray tracing mode on the Xbox Series X. Never realised how much of a fan I would be of reflections.

Reinstalled Control on PS5 after trying it for a couple hours on PS4. Really liking it and it feels fantastic.
Pleased to have found something I’m enjoying.
Went off Doom Eternal. There’s too much verticality and stuff going on with upgrading. Just give me a simple, new Doom.

My friend imprisoned me in a wooden box because I was hoarding our silver to make a badass sword
10/10, would hoard again

Ghost of Tsushima (PS5)
I didn't play the original release on the PS4 and having seen positive feedback on the EG forum I decided to pre order the new updated version. Its been just over a week and I've played very little else.
The combat and visual presentation is excellent. I've taken a few shots in photmode to share and still not reached the end of Act 1 thanks to side quests, tales and exploring between missions.

There’s too much verticality and stuff going on with upgrading. Just give me a simple, new Doom. I really enjoyed Control for the first six hours or so. But the combat never really developed beyond shoot / chuck baddie or scenery / repeat, and being stuck in one main location made it feel tedious to navigate at times. Shame.

I'm playing Scarlet Nexus, about 8 hours in. It's one of those games that takes about 4 hours to start with all the story getting in the way and breaking up the combat/tutorials but I am now really enjoying it.
There are 2 characters involved in the same story and you can play as either seeing events from different sides I assume when I get to a second playthrough. Luckily all cutscenes/dialogue is skippable if needed.

I took Cotton Reboot on holiday with me. It's a cracking little shooter, up until the point where you activate your score multiplier, and the game tells you how much you've increased your score for EVERY enemy in MASSIVE text that covers scenery, bullets, and pretty much everything else on screen. It's absolutely inexplicable that it doesn't allow you to turn this off, as otherwise it's a remarkably friendly shmup that I'd otherwise have no hesitation on recommending.
I also played way too much Neo Turf Masters.

Despite Doom being one of my all time favourite and most played game series I’ve been stalling on Eternal for pretty much these reasons. Too many people whose taste I trust have been lukewarm on it for being too busy with elements that complicate and dilute the purity of the experience. I’m sure one day in a dirt cheap sale or a pubey copy from Cex but I’m still not rushing to it.

I also found it a bit hard and gave up on it about halfway through. I am tempted to restart it on easy mode though and see if that clicks.

I loved Doom Eternal but it spoilt me for Doom 2016 (played it first). Just found it much less engaging. Doom Eternal is pretty full on and you need to always be aware of what you're doing (going for enemy weak points, switching weapons constantly, etc). Thought the platforming was really well done as well. It really did feel like Doom 2 - Doom but bigger and better

Spelunky. Thought I'd at least try to beat this game once on Switch before buying the sequel, but so far I have failed 25 times! Its been a few years since I last played and I realise I only beat it 2 or 3 times ever. Haha

I might give Spelunky a whirl. Been playing Assassin's creed Valhalla and need something to break it up. Been browsing the Eshop and PS stores and nothing really takes my fancy at the moment Spelunky as been on my to play list for some time.

It is, as far as I've played, the best of its genre. No artificial grinding. Just pure player development that gets you closer to victory.

Finishing Spelunky via the Hell levels was one of the best feelings I've ever had gaming. Not played as much of the sequel as I'd have liked shamefully, mainly because it tore me a new one every time I booted it up. So I fired up Binding of Isaac on PS5 last night and noticed that there were now two expansions for it, which puzzled me as I was sure I had the latest version. But, I picked them up anyway. Then realised I already had the full package on Switch. It's still bloody good though. Also playing Life is Strange: Before the Storm. I suspect I'm not the target audience, but it's quietly touching all the same. Oh, and a bit more NFS: Heat. It's..... inoffensive. The rain is really pretty though.

Not played anything since Resident Evil 8 so bought copies of the two RE Revelations games for PS4
I completed the first one twice on 3DS back when it came out. Played the first few 'scenes' yesterday and quite enjoyed it, I think it was the underwater enemies that really annoyed me last time but I've not reached them yet

The Raid mode in Rev 2 is proper good too

Days Gone on ps5
Seems to include most open-world game tropes/mechanics, but something about it is still quite engaging. Not sure how far I am through it, but I get the impression it might soon become a bit of a slog. If anyone has any tips on how to deal with a horde, please let me know!

I bounced off Spelunky (on Vita!) pretty hard - didn’t really find any fun in it to make it worth persevering through a lot of frustration. My main gripes were some very iffy collision detection and too much getting killed by things just off screen. It was also very annoying to get stuck on levels due to running out of the right equipment, although I acknowledge that planning for that is probably part of the game.
Some tough games give you that “one more try” sense that helps you through a difficult section. I love a Dark Souls experience where you learn from mistakes and get gradually better until you can overcome whatever was stopping you before. This had none of that. It was just annoying and seemed to be wilfully abstruse. Definitely not for me.

Don't worry about the hordes yet. To be honest, barring a couple of story hordes, I left them til the end game, at which point I could just blast through them relatively easily.

Horizon Zero Dawn - Started it before but didn't get far. Then put it off for ages because it was 30fps, but the latest 60fps patch sorted that. Think I'm about 8-10 hours in. Really enjoying it. Love the setting and story/mystery so far. Only thing is dislike is some of the similarities with Assassin's Creed, because I am so burnt out on that series, but that is hardly the fault of Guerilla Games.
Hades - I usually hate rogue-like/lites, but this one has it's teeth in me. The fact that each run makes you just a little more powerful means I'm slowly making progress. Think I've done about 16 runs so far, and have only made it as far as the boss at the end of the 3rd level. I don't think I'm very good at it, but I'm hoping with enough perseverance and upgrades, I can brute force my way through it.

Spelunky is the absolute opposite of Dark Souls in that sense - it's not about planning per se, it's about making do with what you have and seeing how far you can go, or at least it is for the first few hours. Once you've figured out all the mechanics and items and how everything gels together, then you can start optimising your runs to try and get to the end (or take alternate paths etc.). And even then it's full of secrets and surprises. It really is close to a perfect roguelike imo.

Scourgebringer- one of the best arcade action games I have played in a long time.
Spelunkiy 2- also excellent, but I still quite notably suck at it .

I'm gonna be controversial here and say Spelunky isn't unfair at all. Every death has been my own fault. For sure, some are harsher than others, but once you're experienced enough, its all on you when things go downhill.
I don't have much nice to say about Dark Souls though (having beaten it myself), so I wont. Haha

I grabbed Yakuza 0 but something isn't quite clicking for me. I've tried the first little chunk 3 times now and I get annoyed with the weirdish camera, the slightly off cgi cutscenes and the karaoke within half an hour. Is there a point to just push on to before I consign it to the abandoned games thread?

Did you get to the Dojima family fight? It definitely seems like a slow burn game (from the little I've played), but the story also has me intrigued.

I've got to be nearly finished with bastarding Guacamelee 2. Did the bird-piloted cactus boss and a chellenge room for the third part of the golden key, which was one of the most bastardly bits of game design I've ever experienced it. You basically were not allowed to touch the floow for the most part, had to chain wall-jumps, mid-air moves, form changes and plane changes to complete it and my fingers nearly fell off.
I'm starting on the backlog in order of age (or rather, how long it's been sat unplayed on the HD), so next up will be either Assault Suit Leynoss, Lumo, Hyper Light Drifter or Yomawari: Midnight Shadows.
