FF XVI would be better if after each mission it didn't keep forcing you back to base. No spoilers.....There is even a moment in the story when you spend time crossing the sea only to reach the beach, then the game sends you back to base, for......reasons. After a bit more pace breaking dialogue, you then head back out to the beach across the ocean.
It makes no sense at all and it just pads the game out UN-necessarily.

I realised the past few days that some of my favourite games have all been ones where you travel with an interesting party of characters.
Mass Effect, Boulders Gate 3, Final Fantasy VII, Like a Dragon, Tales of Arise etc.
Traveling with an interesting party of characters really makes the journey much more rewarding. This is what FFXVI lacks the most I feel and why I won't be picking up the next mainline entry unless they re-introduce this.

I'm about halfway through I think. Setting sail for Mt. Drustanus and Drake’s Breath. I'm still enjoying my time, but I can sense a lot of padding is about to hit me. The story is intriguing me, but if they throw too much padding, then I'm going to lose interest.

The main story doesn't really get bogged down with padding. The padding comes from the side quests

Worth pointing out though - as padded as they are, the side quests are still rewarding both materially and in terms of lore. It's just that they are very numerous and drag on a bit

Well that’s Hugo down for the last time.. I hope. That battle was a bit of a slog with Ifrit. I’m not a major fan of these big boss fights.. it’s a lot of just button mashing. Anyway the story has got me hooked. I’m really hoping I can get this done for Rebirth.

Speaking of those battles, did anyone else find Ifrit's design a little iffy? He's just got that same "craggy" texture all over with not much else to it. It reminded me of a fan made texture pack that might have been done for an older game

I know it’s not unique to FF, but I’m sick of defeating a boss, then it’s not finished.. you have to beat it again. It’s that anime trope. Got to heighten everything constantly. Just please no more.

Phew that was an ending. Overall I really enjoyed it, perhaps my favourite FF story in quite some time. There's just way too much padding, and some of the boss fights dragged for me. I'll probably mop up some side quests if I ever fancy dipping back.

Regarding the ending... ... there seems to be some debate as to whether Clive and/or Joshua survive. My thinking is that Clive dies, and either Joshua lives to write the book shown in the post-credits scene, or someone else (Jill? Gav?) writes it in his name - what sayeth thou, my fellow Font Geeks?

I've veered between tolerance and contempt for the series since XII (which I loved). CEX were flogging it for £30 or so a few weeks back, which I was sort of tempted by, but they had about 18 copies in a town that only plays Fifa and CoD, barely 4 months after release

I have to confess that I didn't play XVI myself - having decided that I'm all RPG'd out, and will remain so until Dragon's Dogma II comes along in three weeks' time, I watched a Let's Play series instead. The demo was fantastic, but people here and elsewhere said that it doesn't really showcase the game's weaknesses; judging by what I watched on YouTube, I'm inclined to agree. The game has an awesome combat system that seems to have been poorly served by the 'AAA open-world fantasy RPG' formula to which it was applied.
Also an interesting story that, for my money, didn't stick the landing; a wet blanket of a protagonist, but a handful of great supporting characters; and some truly epic boss encounters, as long as you don't mind a smattering of QTEs.

I was set on it being Joshua, that somehow he still retained some of Phoenix or just didnt die there. But think the game gives enough clues it can be Clive still. He alludes that hes looking forward to writing his story after the fighting. And he narrates the first and last lines of the story, its his story. Prob writing it under Joshuas name in memory of him, we know he can pick up different names easily enough. Now how he survives the end of the game is not clear, but certainly seems thats the intention. Perhaps the Rising Tide DLC will add more detail. Playing VII Rebirth and it's cool, team attacks, different playable party members, the music...but it doesn't feel immediately great like XVI did. It's more button mashy. It's fine, great even, but there's aspects to XVI's combat that always felt so amazing to me.

Also free updates for setting eikon ability sets, 40 orchestrion rolls and a new end game mode which judging from the last shot of the trailer, might hint they're gonna give some expanded ending stuff for those who can beat the secret boss

The DLC comes out this week, takes about 10 hrs for story alone apparently. It also came with news that Square consider that FFXVI is a success in reaching out to younger audiences go the series In addition, a free update comes out this week with new songs, buffs to Ramuh and Bahamut abilities and additional cutscenes for some side quests including showing how Clive loses the bearer mark

Taking my time with the DLC, gorgeous area of the game. Leviathan moveset is pretty fun, basically Clive gets a gun.
Could be more dlc coming?

Kind of funny trying this on my laptop. Started immediately on 720p and minimum settings, and it was actually running at 30fps in the prologue area. I was almost impressed. Then it got to the the city and that was like 10fps... which actually slowed down the gameplay too. That was an easy tutorial.
I'll try on the desktop soon enough.

Still some work to do on the PC port. No ultrawide, 30fps locked cutscenes with even more than the game's already very visually soft presentation, and plenty of stutter. I'd forgotten how dull the colour palette is when the game's not blasting out max brightness HDR in the big fights too.

Played the PC demo, I really enjoyed it. Can't say the port "issues" bother me as I don't really care too much about technical shit, can't say I even noticed the cut scene was at 30 and I don't have an ultrawide monitor so whatevs.
Will definitely be getting this.

In enjoying this so far. About 12 hours in and I'm finding it genuinely interesting. I like the world building and how the Final Fantasy tropes are incorporated.

I keep getting distracted from playing this. Had it about a year and played maybe 15-20 hours (think I was going into some mines or something when I last played).
It is good and I've enjoyed quite a lot of it. I do think it would be a much, much better game if it trimmed a lot of the fat though. Make it a 20-25 hour long game and it would have been fantastic, as the story beats are really good and the boss fights are sensational. Everything in-between is a bit meh though and is where you spend most of the time. It isn't helped that all the game play outside of the boss fights you really can just switch off and push buttons with zero effort.
