Whelp I can reliably get to phase 2 of the first boss, but for some reason I can’t read the attacks there. Just too much going on and I can’t seem to get my head around it. Will come back later and see if I can bang my head against it for a bit more.

I love it in these games when you find a spell, technique or buff that's really valuable, in this case Inner Breath, which supercharges your Divine Beast gauge. Recommended if like me you value any edge you can get in battle.

What! I just beat the first boss for my son and I didn't know when I did it what the buttons were for use your spirit beast. Turns out you best the first boss at half health! I struggled for ages on that boss as after half health he goes mental with aggressive combos. Ergh such rage yesterday for no reason.

At mid range he will often go for his red grab attack..parry that for huge damage and when he gets to around half your spirit beast is ready and press b and y to instantly finish the battle, which I only just learnt.

Is anyone playing this on PC? Seems that it is a broken mess, but not sure if that is a universal problem or if it is just a vocal minority. I think they have acknowledged it’s a bit fucked on the PC and are working on a patch. Might be worth holding off a bit.

Getting beyond frustrated with Lu Bu, even perfectly countering a dozen times barely scratches him. Can’t upgrade my weapons anymore than they are, I’ve even respecced to water, but I can barely get him down to half his health. He just has a ridiculous health pool.

Yeah I’m so so close to charging up the easy win but I make a hash of it every time. On the plus side I can do phase one without healing now.

Your sidekick does tell you to unleash the spirit beast, but the game doesn't tell you the actual buttons, I think. Unless you played the tutorial mission earlier. You'd think they would have an on-screen prompt since it's pretty important.

Yeah I didn't do the tutorial and I could hear the npc saying it and even see the icon. (The icon that looks like the move would be RB and b as it's the same wheel is the martial arts move)

To be fair, if there's one character you should expect to be a goddamn bitch to fight in any Three Kingdoms-referencing game, it's Lu Bu...

I beat the boss after on my first proper try but I honestly have no idea how. Felt like she was flying around kicking the shit out of me.

Oh also, upgrade your armour at the blacksmith, you can get medium armour up to heavy armour defence with a couple of levels of upgrade. Makes a massive difference

The ninjas and spear dudes in the second section of the prison don’t fuck about. That’s a bit of a step up.

Haven't gone in there yet, stopped just as I killed the boss.

Basically, if you see a soldier, there is a ninja hiding nearby to give you one up the bracket. It’s very annoying.

Is this harder than Sekiro? I really liked Sekiro but couldn’t get passed that roof cunt so bounced off it hard

Lu Bu's the first boss since the first boss (which I did the hard way as I didn't spot the prompt to do the talisman attack) where I feel like I've actually had to learn his attacks rather than just winging it. I'm using light armour, which means he two-shots me. Since including knocking him off his horse means I have to stun him six times to win, I can make one mistake per loop. It's easy enough on the horse, unless you're too close and his two red attacks look too similar on the initial wind-up, but the execution when he's off (and making those heavy attacks actually hit rather than whiffing and wasting my stamina gauge) is a sterner challenge. I'm sure I'll do it in a couple of attempts next time I sit down with it as I'm very close to memorising his whole move set. I can't really see cheesing it with summoned allies working since they get worked by his horse phase, as well as starving you of some very easy parries and free spirit gauge.

Bit weird it doesn’t have the automatic arrow restocking they had in nioh 2. I keep buying them at flags despite having over 300.
I say weird. I mean stupid.

Lu Bu is down. FU LU BU.
I am glad that’s done. Easily took me 100+ attempts, even if I abandoned most of them when I felt I wouldn’t make it through.

Am I not looking forward to Lu Bu. I'm so rubbish at bosses; none have been as hard as Zhang Liang so far but even Zhang Bao took me about ten tries (after getting him down to a sliver of health first time, typical...).
Roughly how many missions in is Lu Bu? I'm only on about the 4th or 5th. I might even do some research to optimise my build, spells, armour before I get to him.

Feels like the type of game that I'd enjoy more with a (vague, non-spoiler) walkthrough tbh. Obviously the blind experience is better in some aspects and I'll stick to it for the most part (especially bosses), but it'd be very annoying to be a third through the game and find out there's a helmet that detects flags found in an alcove in the second mission, for example

It’s hard to spoiler, tbh. The story has somehow been absolutely done to death but at the same time completely non-sensical and all the bosses are either a powerful human or cthulhu

When you do the boss that clones himself just let your follower die or dismiss him, he is a complete liability and makes the fight much harder than it needs to be. You are already fighting the camera and quite a dodgy framerate in that bit so don't make it harder for yourself.

It is quite funny seeing these fabled warriors of old repeatedly getting their heads kicked in. Its like they saw mimic tear and intentionally made them absolutely fucking useless.
And not only do they get absolutely kerb stomped by low level mobs, their AI is just woeful, so they wont get out of the way of anything.

Apparently when you max out their bond level they give you their armour, so that might be nice.
...wait, when you bond with them they give you their clothes? Seems legit

I love this, truly, yet I can't help feel that this game feels like the one they made BEFORE the Niohs and not the other way around. There seems to be some strange backward steps and things that are just a bit irritating. The lack of automatically restocking projectiles, the map and mission selection just being a bit counter intuitive compared to Nioh, the level design which so far seems to be focused on cliffs and caves and not much spectacle, the music not being as good, a few other things.
Also, one personal thing that has nothing to do with gameplay, but there's no model viewer this time. I love the enemy designs these guys come up with and being able to look at all the Yokai and the bosses in detail was something I loved about Nioh. You just get a still image and an annoying bit of auto scrolling text this time.
Plus it just seems to be missing something. Can't figure out what. Something about the atmosphere is just a bit off.
Niggles though.
