Yeah I'm just starting to feel my way around that level and it does pack a punch. A bit worried about this Lu Bu chap. Will see how it goes, hopefully won't hold me up for a week like some of the bosses on Sekiro:/ Other than that, loving this game. Yeah, took me a while just to do the first bit, then when I got to the next Battle Flag I'd found my rhythm a bit more...and boosted my morale by searching fro Marking Flags, something that feels even more essential in this level. Some are tucked away so have a good look around.

There is a water build that absolutely ruins him. He doesn't even get off his horse, you need to get your friendship up to rank 10 with one of the allies and use his armour set. Should be able to find the video on YouTube fairly easily if you have a look. There is also a quick way to get unlimited cups of cordiality if you need to get a rank up quickly. youtu.be/NeCkl70j-cMMight be a good idea to point out that the linked dude is like level 90-100 (double edit: some comments saying 140+ but also on NG+), this is not the kind of fight you should expect heading in fresh-faced and barely in the 40s Even putting everything into water probably won't get you there and you'll be lacking in everything else. That's insane. I'm guessing he's pretty high level there but even so. Is there some description of the spells, stats and armour somewhere? I couldn't see any

Although to be fair water does counter his fire so it's not a bad idea to have a spell just to douse him. Just don't expect a walk in the park like in the video

I couldn't see any Video maker left a comment that they'd post the build but far as I could see they haven't yet. At a guess, plenty of levels in water, the armour set that boosts water phase spells (not sure which one it is), probably also the relevant Divine Beast and whatever spell it is that drops icicles. And probably Water Attack mods embedded on his equipment.

I'm just looking into oath levels and rewards now. Down another rabbit hole I go.

Ah crud. I thought that was a more generic build rather than the one on Lu Bu. My bad 😅
At least it confirms we're looking at high levels for that kind of performance though.

Is the ice spell even available at that point? That's the Water 40 one so I'm not even sure if you can unlock it as there are two spells on each tree which need a later mission for access.

Actually yeah, that needs a side mission doesn't it? I didn't mention it because I couldn't remember for sure, but if it's at such high levels...

You can deflect Lu Bu's fire toss and the other fire attack is a red counter one which - once you get the timing down - becomes a piece of piss. Think he has some fire melees as well but a deflect or block will negate any fire build up. I had fuck all fire defense and think I only took fire damage once.

'get everything to high levels and cast high level spells'

His throw was the hardest for me to counter as the timing's later than most.
One thing worth remembering as this is unusual compared to Nioh: you can return to the village during a level and when you return you'll be back at the point you were rather than the start, so you can respec or upgrade your equipment and return without losing any progress.

Unrelated thereto: I was stuck for a while on another boss fight (after beating the last handful the first time), 20 attempts or so, not a chance. Respecced to water (the boss likes fire), and I absolutely melted (or rather: extinguished?) him in my first attempt after the respec. The game *really* expects you to respec, what with the travel option to the village at any time, and the respec being free. Yeah, I've just arrived at Lu Bu (bloody hell the level leading up to himi was a lot tougher than any other!). I'm doing some research before going in again and one guide suggests respecing either as earth (using imposing slab) or water (using frost lance and water spike). Of course my build is the opposite (wood / fire) so it's very nice that I can do a consequence-free respec. Now I've just got to pluck up the courage to take him on. I didn't mean this ...encounter... , but water probably helps here, too.

Easy for me to say now but Lu bu is easy after just practicing him. Took me probably 15 goes and since I've got my son and brother past him and that last go for my bro he was so straight forward for me. It took maybe four tries for my bro to not keep dying until the game wouldn't let me pick him up but each attempt I used maybe one heal.

Im sure there are easier ways to fight him when you have power levelled but the hardest thing is being patient and keeping your concentration. You cant really fight him 1v1 at the level you arrive at if youre playing normally, so its just ends up being an endurance test, waiting for him to do a red parry move and avoiding everything else.
Its just a really boring way to set up a boss fight, imho.

Yeah, it's a one note fight for that exact reason. It doesn't lend itself to different playstyles or reward getting stuck in. It's just a case of deflecting and blocking / dodging until you can get a crit hit on him. Saying that though, I still weirdly enjoyed it.

Its when the life turns red and the finish line is in sight that it gets exciting. And, yeah, fair play it is very satisfying when you kill him although it is as much of a relief as anything else.
Tbf, it is a different encounter than most of the others and the subsequent ones are more actual 'fights' so I suppose it does add variety.

Well it's like sekiro and especially like lady butterfly. It's actually easier and quicker if you can stay aggressive as you will actually get the critical. If you stay passive it's very hard to get the critical attack to trigger and the fight take 10 mins or something crazy. Obviously my first success was taking it that slow way but now I've done it four times it's definitely more like butterfly and you get him down pretty quickly by staying on him.

It also depends on the weapon (speed). With the cavalry lance or whatever it is I could barely get a hit in, as opposed to a quicker weapon.
I always used slow weapons in Nioh 2 and it never put me at a disadvantage, so I found that a bit disappointing. Like I said earlier in this thread, bosses seem to be able to override pretty much everything the player can do, which makes using magic, slower weapons or - God forbid - martial arts against many bosses difficult. Not sure I find this a particularly clever design decision.

Very true! I use the short sabre thing and it's one of the fastest weapons in the game..god knows how I'd beat him with a terrible slow bad deflect weapon.

Well, I had one pop, got him off his horse fairly easily and then just thought....I can't be arsed.
Not very inspiring. I'll come back to it when I'm in the mood.

It feels like Im missing something but having the majority of the enemies and bosses be able to poise through every multi-hitting martial arts move in a combat system focussed around martial arts seems a bit weird.

Yeah, absolutely, it just doesn't make sense. During normal combat, you can barely afford to get locked into a long martial arts combo, and when the enemy is stunned, you do that "fatal" move, anyway. Martial arts in particular seem to be a bit of awasted opportunity. I have one spell in the earth tree now (near or at the very top) that explicitly says it "goes through" an enemy attack, but that's the only skill/spell that mentions this at all (that I am aware of).

I find the martial arts more situational. Like one that includes a lot of wide sweeps being good for when you're beset by multiple enemies etc

The dodge/single hit moves are decent. The ones like meteor shower only ever work on low level mooks.

Nioh had the same issue with its story. Lots of historical characters introduced, with the assumption you know who they are and why they're a big deal.
