It think it was unclelou said he couldn't drop it even though he has completed it. I'm totally the same. Two days straight now I'm still playing this after finishing it even though I have other games to be playing. The combat is too satisfying to stop.

Oh my. Hong Jing in The Scarlet Crystal is a bit challenging. Going to have to think about a strategy here. I don't know what anyone thinks but I suspect build is less important than just finding ways to get close and wail on her before she casts spells? I think dual swords and martial arts were the key for me here. I just battered her and interrupted a lot of her spells. Just look out for red attacks when youre close. Like I said a few pages ago, it is pretty funny how she is in this fight compared to how fucking useless she is when shes trudging around a level after you.

She was though very good at falling in the water in the flooded level.

So far, every companion I faced in a sub mission is generally stronger than when they fought alongside me...

And done. Just a couple of sides to clear up. Last four bosses all went down first try which was a bit anticlimactic. Overall as much as I had gripes, I really did love it. It’s no Nioh but it’s so damn fun to play. Team Ninja nail the combat, that’s for sure.
Talking of Team Ninja, I just discovered they did a FF game last year that actually doesn't look too dissimilar to this and Nioh. Hmmmm.

I'd urge you to do some research on that FF game wunty, it's rather bad I think...

In regards to the story at least wunty . If you're only in it for the combat and don't care about much else you might enjoy it AFAIK.

Oh I’m not going to buy it. Well. Yet. It’s one that when it’s dirt cheap I might. If there’s any combat similarities then it might be fun.

My son finished it earlier and now believes it's this order for the ones he has played.
1) wo long 2) sekiro 3) elden ring 4) demons souls

See weirdly my boy won't touch these ones. He's done all the Fromsoft jobbies but despite my best attempts shows no interest in Nioh or this. I am disappoint.

Perhaps it's a presentation thing? Team ninja games definitely aren't as beautiful and atmospheric. They definitely have the gameplay down but lack in other areas.

Yeah maybe. Not sure. I think maybe it could be that, but perhaps the loot aspect as well and maybe just the sheer amount of things to consider put him off. I honestly thought he would be in there. Then again, he doesn't like Demon's Souls either. Odd boy. Sekiro is his favourite, followed by Bloodborne, then Dark Souls 3 then I think ER, and bottom is DS 1 then 2. Tell you, I might ask the postman what his least favourite fromsoft game is. I'm getting suspicious.

Piss off, eunuch. I had the rat bastard on a sliver then got hit by like five electric balls at once (he respawned his clones at some point even though I hadn't taken them all out, but he was low enough that I tried to rush him anyway - and it would have worked, but...)
Dead on the second go, though. Which of course brings me to...
Ah, shit.

Oh, but wait a second! A certain spell-unlocking side mission is actually available already!
Now the question is, do I go for the (frozen) cheese...?
Nah. I'll probably fight him fairly for a few rounds. It's Lu Bu, he deserves it.

Every clone killed chips away at his overall Qi meter, so it is worth killing them all. By the time youve popped them all, it doesnt take much extra to stagger him.
Its also worth equipping a long lasting AOE spell as everyone will wander into it at some point.

Thanks for the advice, but he's kinda dead already, so... 😅
(I did know how the fight worked from watching DadFE, I just didn't bother the second time because he was already almost dead... To my detriment, of course.)

Don't get me wrong, he was brutal! One and a half hours by my count, and while I did use the forbidden spell, it wasn't nearly as game breaking as you might think as you'll see in the video in a few hours (in the sense that it wasn't just "spam it and win", at least).
Very satisfying fight. A straight up dance if I may be so bold, with plenty of stumbles on my part but beautiful overall. Much easier while he was on the horse too, more openings for the spell to actually hit.
Edit: a dance of which you'll only see half... *grumble*stupid 3 minute limit...*grumble*

Video as promised: www.xbox.com/en-GB/play/media/MMZXPDWA3ZOnly caught the back half, but you get the gist: tango with him as best as I could until he goes for a bow attack, then make it rain. That random +5HP on deflect put in a lot of work. Also note how I wasn't adding extra attacks after deflecting his horse attacks to keep him on it because it was easier Would probably have gone better if I'd bothered to swap equipment effects around to ice attack boosts, but I'm certainly not about to complain! (I came far too close to losing it when I risked an Art just as he was going for a second critical of his own though... Good thing it worked out 😅)

Well this topic fell off hard 😅 Anyway, DadFE and I have been kind of blitzing through this in our respective files. Both on Part 6 now! He'll probably finish it first in terms of real time (he's been going to sleep at some ungodly -for him- hours ) but I've got him beat on game time, so hey.

The real thing I need to know is who is the best player out of you both?

Results inconclusive, although I think I've first-tried more bosses than he has, at this point. And I'm lower-levelled with a less focused build, FWIW If the benchmark is Lu Bu, I think it took me less tries, but I also had access to Ominous Chill... And we both beat Lu Bu 2: Demonic Boogaloo first go

The real thing I need to know is who is the best player out of you both? Unconditionally, he is! I'm still struggling to remember which button combination performs magic and which martial arts!!!
Edit: Even if I finish it first, lap time still exists and he's been much quicker to reach the end; not to mention that blindfold boy is kicking my arse royally at the moment!

Skill vs persistence innit It's kind of funny how much it's absorbed you though JonFE I don't even remember Elden Ring pushing you to the kinds of bedtimes you've pulled lately

Finished - all missions, all achievements. I really enjoyed it though it hasn't dislodged Nioh (2) in my affections; the systems (loot, levelling) don't feel quite as deep or engrossing even if the combat is pretty enjoyable.
I'm not sure about NG+ but the DLC could bring me back in.

... and the final boss is down! Enjoyed it enormously, the first non-From SoulsBorne game I actually played to the end and rather quickly I may add Story-wise can't say I understood much, locations were small and kind of uninspired, their only saving grace were the clever shortcuts, enemies could be more varied, but kudos to Team Ninja, they nailed to combat to the T. Still have a couple of part 6 sub-missions and some achievements to clear and will definitely get the DLC once released.

What would folk like to see in the DLC? Apart from a few substantial levels I'd be happy to see - more varied enemies, more types of enemy
- a wider range of weapons, with more meaningful differences within categories
- an overhaul of the loot system - I'd say more loot, but I'm not sure that's right. I want better loot, really, as well as...
- ...more flexibility when tinkering. Embedding could be a bit cheaper but above all I want to be able to do more with accessories. Some customisation options here would be great - perhaps keep this expensive or have some other currency for it (stacking / merging accessories to gain new combinations?)
- oh, the ability to swap in and out Marital Arts!
- Some simple QOL stuff like indicating which collectibles remain in a given level, like Nioh does with Kodama. Finding the last few Shitieshou and golden cicada shells was a bit of chore (but the completionist in me will not rest, so not doing it is not an option).

We'll definitely get more weapons and enemies going by the Nioh DLC. I don't see them changing the loot system tbh.
