It did 'encourage' me to get better to kill the tiger and then the monkey thing. Build bar with light attacks and cash your meter out with a heavy attack to end the combo, martial arts or magic. In the demo I was just waiting to be attacked but got on the front foot a bit more last night. Yeah I think agression is really the key here. You have no stamina for a reason and they really want you to build that blue meter with the light attacks.

This is proper fucking heresy but with this and now two Nioh games, I genuinely think that there is a true challenger to FROMs games for me. I may be going mad but I'm getting much more of a thrill with the combat here than I did with Elden Ring last year. It is kind of its own sub-genre now. Did you try the stranger of/in/whatever paradise demo? That was Final Fantasy Nioh and seemed pretty good. Never got around to picking it up, though.

Yeah certainly as far as combat goes but their world building and enemy variety pales in comparison.

My biggest problem with this, for sure, is the setting. For a big country, China has like four stories, Monkey king, some bullshit about imperial concubines, Ip Man and three kingdoms and I have had enough of each one to last a lifetime.

Yeah certainly as far as combat goes but their world building and enemy variety pales in comparison. Yeah but I could counter argue that a large portion of enemies in ER are actually bullshit, and by the end of Nioh 2 after it's expansions there were bloody dozens of different Yokai and they were all enjoyable to fight. World building is a tough one, as one dev's games have their roots in reality and established myth and the other is fantastical.

Oh yeah nioh 2 combat way better than er but FROM games have miles better world building and atmosphere etc. I find most team ninja levels very average, it's the fun fast combat that makes it great.

The combat, level design and build systems encourage replay for me more than any FROM game. Different strokes, really. FROM games are better 'one and done', end to end experiences but I have spent longer in Nioh 2 than pretty much all the Dark/Demons souls put together.
Only Elden Ring really allowed/encouraged that sheer amount of fannying about.

Played a few hours last night (continuing from the demo), and I finished one main and one side level, and started another main level.
It's great fun, but I am a bit worried about combat/weapon variety. Every weapon basically has two standard attacks and the martial arts moves, but - so far - there aren't any skilltrees, no combos, no stances. It feels very toned down from Nioh in that regard. I haven't really looked much into the spells though, mind.

Played about one hour. It's okay so far. It has some similar issues for me like nioh games where there too much jazz going on mid combat to actually appreciate what's going on. Loads of flashes and pops like the old batman TV show. Can't see what's going on half the time. Not sure about parry and dodge on the same button either. The parry window is nice and huge though so on the first boss you could pretty much just parry then X X X y, parry X,X,X,y your way to the W.

I think the parry being tied to the dodge is genius for fucking idiots like me who don't know when to parry and don't know when to dodge.

Hmm, slightly mixed feelings so far to be honest, which is a bit disappointing. I'm certainly enjoying it but I'm not really mastering the bosses (I've only done a couple mind); I get hammered, I come back, I sometimes do a bit better, sometimes not, and then get through them, but without always quite knowing what I'm doing...apart from missing the parry half the time, doing all manner of dodging and spamming strong / special attacks. I suppose this is okay, but it doesn't feel that satisfying so far. It just feels a bit frantic at times, and I'd prefer something more measured. I didn't feel this so much in Nioh, even if they were tough as nails. I felt there were more varied and interesting tactical options (cough, sloth, cough).
I hope later I come to regret this and proclaim it my GOTY. We'll see.

Buffing your allies makes an absolutely massive difference in boss fights. In fact if you are stuck, play it cautious and keep allies buffed. Parry red attacks and win.

On that note the aoye fight is really shit, the boss is massive and it's really hard to tell what it's going to do because of the camera.
Game is definitely better when you are fighting things tiger sized and smaller. All of the massive bosses haven't been any fun.

Minor tip: there is a regain-health-when-dealing-damage spell which is almost a free potion if you pop it before a grapple. It’s giving me so much health back.

I've got that but didn't seem to get much health back from it. I'm not heavily invested in that tree though so it could be that.

How you finding the combat? I keep going back to the demo and I'm not sure I'm sold on it. Feels a bit mindless and button mashy. Just attack attack attack parry repeat until dead. Doesn't feel anywhere near as measured as Nioh.
And is it right that there's no skill trees for moves?

No skill tree for moves, just magic. Combat is great against anything other than large enemies. However I think bosses are a bit flawed as they take bugger all damage other than when you break their posture.

I'm currently stuck so I've been invading other people which is quite a bit of fun. Can't get a co-op going for love nor money so I'm guessing most people are behind me a bit as the ones I can join are all for earlier levels.

Am enjoying wandering through the levels and taking out mobs. Bosses not so much. It's all about the posture break and that isn't that exciting for me tbh.

Just seen on Reddit that we could be wrong there Mr Feline. They reckon that once you have charged the spirit bar up with light attacks your heavy attack should be almost as hard as a posture grapple. Just need to stop mine being red all of the time now.

Huh, good to know. I'm here criticising the game but I have to be honest - I'm not yet paying nearly enough attention to my spirit bar!

Yeah I just went on an hour of murdering other players just to cheer myself up. Not quite sure how I'm going to beat him at the moment but will be very happy when I do.
The AI helpers just get ruined by him instantly as well.

Yeah, if you cash out your bar with a heavy attack when it’s all the way right, you flash and it hits a lot harder. If you use a heavy attack in neutral or with your bar on the left, it doesn’t flash and does less damage. The trick seems to be finding the right combo ender to spend your bar on. Like when you fight those mermaids, you should cash out with a fire spell but if someone is near a ki break I’m going for a martial art. I dunno. It’s how I’m reading it at the moment anyway.

So far all this is doing is pissing me off. Think I'll just have to co op the whole thing as the bosses are too fucking annoying.

Ooof. The first boss isn’t fucking about is he?
I also couldn’t beat the wild animal I found off the beaten track a little earlier in the level. Not sure if it’s my skillz or these are things I have to level around.

Tiger? If you sneak up behind him and start with a backstab he will be much easier.

Think I‘ve unlocked all mechanics/functions now, made quite a bit of progress, but now I am stuck on a boss who is deep in bullshit territory (Zhang Rang) - that said, I’ve only found 2/6 flags in that level, and that seems to make a *massive* difference.

Okay think that's enough for today. Beaten maybe six bosses or something and in the flow of it now. I've looked at nothing in the menus so far at all or read anything telling me about the various stats. All I know is I've upgraded a 3 star sword to +3 and I use parry all the time and nothing else.
