I ended up cleaning the enemies out until they stopped respawning in a few of them (Blue Smleter, Sir Alonne, Lud and Zallen). Tedious, but it worked Yeah, I'm aware you can do that but just not worth the time. Apart from Sir Alonne, they're kind of refights anyway, aren't they?
Enemies no longer spawning in DS2 is the 'You seem to be doing a bit shit' moment like the power up you get offered in Mario when you're doing a bit shit. Fuck off game, it's A DIFFICULT BIT

Blue Smelter/Lud and Zallen are, yes.
I don't think Graverobber, Varg, and Cerah are, and I tend to lump them in with Blue Smelter and the cat twins (hard to get back to, ostensible co-op focus, etc.).

Talking of Metroid. Was actually tempted to put metroid fusion in my top 5. My first metroid game, and I bloody loved it. It's definitely in my top 5 Metroid games. |

Oh I've done the three human enemy ones. Didn't find them too bad Yeah you just Benny Hill their nonsense. As for the others I just wanted to say I'd killed them. Except Alonne, because his Katana is amazing and I ended up getting good enough for the seppuku outcome as a bonus, which was very satisfying |

The Legend of Zelda - The first game I played when I got my own NES. It was a magical childhood experience.
TIE Fighter - The first game I played so much it was actually starting to become a problem as I skipped all homework for months to tinker with editors and make custom missions.
Fallout - Lots of old 2D CRPGs could go on a greatest list, but Fallout is the one I have the most affection for and the least to complain about.
Homeworld - Was properly mindblowing at the time and there's still no space RTS that's topped it.
STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl - Probably the most immersed I've ever been in a game. Don't think I'll ever be able to play it again after what's happened this year though.
Portal - It's just a joy.
Dark Souls - I had no interest in it for a very long time as everything I heard about it made it sound like just an excuse for tryhard to brag about their skillz while shitting on all other games on the internet. Then I tried it and it ate my life.
Dishonored - Love the world building, the visual design, level design and the freedom to explore and figure things out for yourself. And I don't usually even like stealth games.
Rimworld - A Dwarf Fortress I can actually play without going insane.
Anno 1800 - The best comfort food gaming. It's not perfect but it's just so nice and relaxing and pretty to look at.

Fuck off game, it's A DIFFICULT BIT I've never been able to work out whether that design choice was the devs saying "ah, poor little player can't even get through this section and we have to give a hand" or "hahaha, you're so shit and we are now going to remove your means of leveling up so you can't just out-level the area". I'm pretty certain that removing enemies actually ends up inversely making the game harder. Much like the way it lowers your health when you die, it ends up being a punishment for failing, which is normally pretty poor design (I say normally because the curse effect in DS1 could be seen similarly, but that actually just creates a whole new quest of you having to reverse the effect and adds to the player's story). |

Alpha Centauri - The best Civ ever
Slay the Spire - I’ve only beaten it properly a handful of times with each character but I can’t stop having another go
Fez - Just wow. And that soundtrack.
Star Wars Galaxies - lacking in content but my god did we roleplay the fuck out of that game
Destiny/Destiny 2 - I’m off that hamster wheel now and been clean for a couple of years but it created friendships that shot aliens in the face every day for a long time

I'm curious. Are there any games on anyone's list that perhaps they didn't love at first, but had a reversal on over time?
Because If I was to go into a top ten, I would be tempted to pop Doom Eternal on there. I really wasn't keen on it first time I went through it, however the second time, when I then went on to do all the DLC, I absolutely LOVED it.

The DLC is fantastic, honestly. What put me off was all the talk of the new enemies and how shit they are, but they work. All of them. They're also not just thrown at you constantly and there's real consideration as to how they are integrated into the flow of combat.

Very unforgiving dungeon crawler where if you delved too deep too you'd die instantly. Once I sussed that out, I was addicted, but until then, it was not fun. I never got strong enough to get to the lowest levels though. |

It still is, even with patches and mods, but it ran so badly for me, it crashed a lot, it was really obtuse and I had no idea how anything worked for the first few hours. But all the weirdness was also compelling me to keep going and eventually even the bugs kind of melted into the weird experience of this world where the fabric of reality was breaking up and glitching out. |

I only played it years after it came out and I played it modded right away. I thought it was brilliant. Janky as fuck but brilliant. I think I'm bit of an anomaly because I genuinely liked the second game the most, with the faction warfare mod it felt like my actions had a real effect on the world. |

That's exactly what I ended up doing - leading the dual-wield guy and Cosplay Havel on a merry chase while damaging the archer as much as possible; taking out the dual-wield guy (while still running around like a lunatic); then putting on my big-boy pants and parrying the Havel wannabe into oblivion.
Back on topic, re Wunty's 'games you love now but didn't right away' question, that's exactly how I felt about The Last of Us during my first playthrough.
I got the game free with my PS4, knowing nothing about it except that it was supposedly a masterpiece, and found it to be a real slog at first - I didn't understand the concepts of stealth and ammo conservation, so I kept dying while trying to play aggressively (as I would in GTA!), and the world was just *so* dark and depressing to me.
I ended up shelving it until I'd beaten all the other games I'd picked up in late 2015, then went back for another try.
By the time you play as Ellie for a bit, I was starting to enjoy it; by the end, I was having a *lot* of fun; when I did a second playthrough, including the DLC, I loved everything about it.
I'm one of the people who really didn't like the sequel much at all, but the original is an all-time great in my eyes.

Cyberpunk and No Man's Sky would probably qualify for that if someone played them both pre- and post-patches. Of course I've played neither, but No Man's Sky especially is touted as a different game, almost. |
