The only thing I remember about THPSU was the douchebag rival.

Even THPS4 was a little bit sandboxy. The 'getting off the board'feature in Underground was a helpful thing, but I think 4 is just better balanced and has the better levels. Not too big or weird.

THUG is worthwhile, but annoying. The DS port is pretty cool, if somewhat unplayable.
An open world THPS game is genius on paper.

I'm going to have to do a top 10 I think. Too many other games to consider:
In no particular order:
Dark Souls 2 Bloodborne Thief Gold System Shock 2 Shadow of the Beast 2 Death Stranding FEAR 2 C&C: Red Alert Quake 2 Control

Skate 2 > Any THPS game after 2
Better sandbox, better & more realistic controls and tricks (no infinite grind, for example), better lineup of skaters.

I pefer the original to Gold. I think it flows better and the opera house is the only really good new level. The gambling den level is awful

See I like the fact that the four talismans are over 4 missions. I love the mage guild as well. Plus the fact The Sword mission is even more batshit.

Oh wait, is it the secret area where you're tiny?

The massive world isn’t there in the original. Or are you suddenly tiny? I’m not sure.
Bonehoard is a fucking excellent level. I do like the haunted cathedral as well.
Such a scary fucking game. The audio is superb.

I do like the controls and how satisfying it can be to do some pretty down to earth moves, but I am a sucker for arcade or 'gamey' games. I can't imagine how many hours I put into those Tony Hawk games growing up.

They are stupidly good fun. But the Skate games (and 2 in particular) are an elevation. Like Rodney Mullen to Tony Hawk, if you like. (also, Skate has Marc Johnson and Chris Haslam, which is made of win)

When you put it like that, Rodney Mullen is the real king of skateboarding.

The THPS games would be great, if they didn't have all the annoying NPCs in them. I don't think there's a single one I don't want to punch.

Okay, here is my brain splurge. Organised by the machine they are on:
BBC Micro - err none. All games here have been very much surpassed many times over.
Gameboy - Final Fantasy Legend 2, FF Mystic Quest and of course Zelda: Link's Awakening were equally fantastic at the time. Gradius Interstellar Assault sealed my love of shmups forever.
SNES - Chrontrigger and Final Fantasy VI were my top games for obvious reasons
Megadrive - Thunder Force III & IV are so good I happily return to them still today. Nod to Streets of Rage 2 of course.
90s PC - Doom/Doom II, Hexen, Baldur's Gate 1&2, No One Lives For Ever, Half Life 1 & 2 Those 90s shooters hold a special place in my heart, unfortunately then the likes of Call of Duty took over.
Playstation - Final Fantasy VII, Vagrant Story Most of the SquareSoft games of this era were superb to be fair.
PS2 - Final Fantasy X & XII, God of War 2, Resident Evil 4. Possibly my least favourite console generation (not counting the first three which I missed). The games I played certainly were enjoyable, but they have all been surpassed by PS3 & PS4 games in my opinion (other than the four mentioned).
PS3 - Ketsui, Portal 2, Demon's Souls, Dark Souls and Dark Souls 2 (although I played the PS4 version) and Uncharted 2
PS4 - Battle Garegga, Bloodborne, Alien Isolation, Uncharted 4, Witcher 3 and maybe even Final Fantasy XV
I've yet to play the following likely contenders: Dark Souls 3, Sekiro & Elden Ring. Nier Automata, God of War and many others...bit behind the curve here
Also I have a massive load of shmups yet to properly play, especially a ton of the most highly regarded ones.

My choices are so vanilla as a console only scrub but I like what I like
Double Dragon OutRun Resident Evil and all the sequels / remakes with the exception of #6 Demon’s Souls Dark Souls Everybody’s Golf Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004 Grand Theft Auto Vice City Metal Gear Solid Bioshock SSX Tricky GoldenEye 007 Gran Turismo Gitaroo Man WipeOut 2097 Dead Space Horizon Zero Dawn Ridge Racer R-Type Elite Beat Agents / Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan Time Crisis Phoenix Wright : Ace Attorney The House of the Dead 2
Loads more I’ve loved and somehow forgotten but these are ones I remember the most. Also didn’t include the Spectrum days as there would be too many to list

Apart from apparently hating anything post 2011 that looks like a solid enough list to me

Everybody’s Golf Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004 Grand Theft Auto Vice City Metal Gear Solid I've started and stopped working my list a few times now, but these are all definitely on it (well, maybe not Everybody's Golf but Everybody's Golf 2 on the PSP at least - had great fun playing this with EGers back in the day). Good list!

I couldn't pick my fave GTA. Love them all for different reasons and it would be hard to pick my outright one.
Can't even pick between my fave soundtrack out of VC & SA.

I think VC is probably my favourite soundtrack, because there's so little I actively avoid. There's no country, I was incarcerated in a carseat and therefore had to listen to the pop stations when those songs were playing and hair metal was a nice throwback when the game released
SA I basically switch between the hiphop and grunge stations

Zelda - Links Awakening Zelda - BOTW Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney Super Mario 64 Unirally Final Fantasy 7 Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow Portal 2 Half Life 2 No more Hero's Super Mario Galaxy Tony Hawk 1 & 2 Rocket League Pro evo Soccer Street Fighter 4 Wonderful 101 Mario Kart 8 Fantasy World Dizzy Hades Sayonara Wild Hearts Broken Sword 1 & 2 Pikmin 3 Resident evil 4 Earthbound Mass Effect Trilogy Animal crossing Stardew Valley Flower
I'm sure I've missed something huge from this list but those are the ones that spring to mind as having had a huge impact on me. The single player games in this list are also the only ones I've completed more than once

Forgot one on my list
Silent Hunter - Probably played 4 the most, but have very fond memories of the original. 12 years since 5 came out, it's probably a dead series now, but could look stunning on modern machines.

There's just so much good shit in the VC soundtrack. With SA I was never entirely satisfied and was always changing the channel but then as I was playing on pc I just used my own era specific playlist. I even quite liked the GTA 4 soundtrack especially when it got updated with the TBoGT.

Good list! I won't lie but playing Mario Kart Double Dash and Tiger Woods 2004 at a mate's house at uni convinced me to get a GameCube after being PC only for so long. They really don't make golf games like that anymore and Ready, Steady, Go by William Orbit is burned into my memory.

Missed Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver off my list. Doubt it plays very well now but it's always at the top of my list for a remake.

I fired up my Switch this morning for the first time in a year as I’ve ordered Star Wars Pinball and it should be here tomorrow
The last game I played was Flashback, which along with Dark Souls must be the game I’ve completed more than anything else
Still plays incredibly well now, I’m adding it to my list
