Its definitely harder than GoW 1. I've hardly used that frost/fire charge thing you can do with triangle as I keep forgetting about it. Feels like you get a lot less time to decide on an action than the first one.
Probably doesn't help that the shield I've decided to invest into seems to be a high risk/high reward parry focused one. I think the window is smaller with a greater stun, but I'm wank at timing these things.

So after all the hype in here I downloaded GOW 2018 on ps5, it’s rather good isn’t it, just had the battle with who I presume is Loki at the beginning, great stuff. It’s also probably the best looking ps4 game I’ve seen. Does the new one look even better or is it more of the same?

Can anyone tell me what the big yellow circles are on an enemy attack? Red is dodge but what does the other mean? Missed the tutorial bit.

In the original that was a block breaking attack.

Red is block breaking. I think yellow is difficult to dodge so you should block.

It's an iterative approach, I'd describe it as an exceptionally polished game, it looks similar but there is just far more detail. For me it supports my argument as to why I choose an artist driven linear semi open world as opposed to the procedural open works games of today. I'm still amazed that they got the sequel running on a PS4 at a full 1080p with a solid frame rate.

Oh, there we go. Red is unblockable, yellow is block breaking, blue is you need to break their block.

Well I really thought I'd play on the HFR + VRR quality mode, but having flicked to high performance mode to have a test I can't go back. Like GoW 2018 the game is completely transformed by a higher frame rate IMO. And I simply cannot tell the difference in terms of resolution. Actually, either due to my TV (C1), the motion blur or the temporal upscaling/anti-aliasing system, as soon as there was any amount of camera movement the quality mode looked noticeably blurrier than the performance mode This is true for all games that offer performance modes. Temporal resolution is king. I find it baffling when Digital Foundry recommend the 30/40fps modes for games. I've never heard anyone suggest they prefer resolution and graphical detail over a higher frame rate. Ragnorok is an exception though, as Digital Foundry conceded the extremely minor gains in graphical detail in the 30fps mode aren't worth the frame rate trade off.

I think in the case of Horizon 2 the performance mode legitimately had compromised visuals so they leaned towards the quality mode. 40fps has a surprising amount of fluidity so I can see why that's heavily recommended especially as you get all the bells and whistles.

It depends on the disparity between graphics settings in Graphics and Performance modes for me. If the resolution is full 4K, with added detail, like Horizon Forbidden West as an example, I'll go Graphics mode. Also if performance is 1440p or below, I might go graphics mode.
If detail is the same, resolution targets are the same with dynamic resolution being the differentiator, I'll go framerate. If ray-tracing is the differentiator, I'll go framerate.
I don't mind a steady 30 if the difference is substantial.

I agree, something like Forza Horizon 5 has exceptional quality mode despite running at 30fps on the series S. Guardians of the Galaxy performance mode that wasn't worth the resolution drop plus I'm still puzzled that the game had no object motion blur in quality mode, made it feel quite choppy.

Red is block breaking. I think yellow is difficult to dodge so you should block. Yellow should be parried, if you block it, you don‘t get hurt immediately, but stumble for a moment, which makes you vulnerable.

It's all installed. I have tomorrow and all of next week off and I loved the last god of war. Just need some snacks and drinks and this could be the best random week off I've booked

I've been working so much this week into the evenings (work from home, so it's easy to do) that my manager is forcing me to stop working at lunch tomorrow and finish for the day! Ragnarok has been installed all week, calling to me, so at least if I don't get to start tonight, I have all afternoon and evening tomorrow - woohoo!

C'mon, dude. Give it to us straight. You're basically the kid in the 90s high school movie who throws a party while his parents are out of town, and suddenly he's BFFs with the captain of the football team and dating the head cheerleader. We, on the other hand, are the band nerds and theatre geeks with whom you used to be friends; now we're trying to convince ourselves that it's fine, 'cause we're all going away to college soon anyway, and keeping up friendships after graduation is hard, and sometimes people grow apart over time, and FUCK YOU DANNO WE NEVER LIKED YOU ANYWAY. I may be projecting somewhat.

Downloading just now. Cook some food early tonight as the missus is working later. Then a couple of cold meads and Ragnarok begins!

Well, I've gone and caved in. Probably not the wisest purchase ever, as I've been enjoying my time with the last one so much that I'm eyeing up the platinum.

I don't think it's a spoiler to suggest that Svartalfheim is absolutely gorgeous.

Okay, game is officially opening up a fair bit now. I've got a shit load of stuff to do in this one area I'm in.
Just when you think you've got the measure of the game, it throws something else at you to almost mock how limited you thought it was going to be. The attitude of "Fuck making this a trilogy, we're just throwing everything we've got into the next one" is really starting to show.

As great as this game looks on the PS5, I can't help but wonder if it's being held back by their decision to also have a PS4 version as well.

I've put several hours into it now and as gorgeous as it looks and enjoyable as it is (it's really damn enjoyable) I'm noticing much more "loading" bits than I remembered from first one. Pretty obvious they are limitations on PS4 that they can't really remove for PS5 version. The slow climbing bits, slow door openings that close behind you, tiny cracks you squeeze through blocking sight of either side etc. It feels like every 30 seconds of going to a new section there's some slow movement cutoff masking loading of some sort.

Definitely a lot more noticeable in this one with the loading bits. The game is so good it doesn't really niggle me like it could have though.

I caved. I'm slightly ashamed of myself. Then again I played two hours tonight and I fucking LOVE it already.

Getting myself back on topic - if only to take my mind off Danno's stunning betrayal! - I'm enjoying the hell out of this. Always a good sign when I spend a fair chunk of time post-launch thinking about a new game, and dying to play more.
I'm actually finding it a bit easier than GoW 2018, on the default difficulty setting, but I've barely scratched the surface thus far. No doubt I'll be getting my ass handed to me on an Asgardian platter before long.
In fact, I'm wondering whether Ragnarok has rendered current-gen Witcher 3 surplus to requirements for the immediate future, assuming the latter ever sees the light of day - if I take my time with Dad of Boy, my thirst for third-person action games will be quenched for some time to come.
Anyway, I digress.
P.S. If I had one minor gripe, it'd be that I wish Atreus would pipe down every now and then (mainly when I'm trying to solve a puzzle).

No Ragnarok or PS5 over here, but this thread makes me want to dust off my PS4 and finally try out GOW 2018 this weekend.
