Tough one. GoT I really like but I stopped playing it and haven't been back since and Horizon FW is another. Got bored of both long before the end.
Favourite is probably GTA5 followed by FarCry3.

Not really a fan of open world but OG Wind Waker gets a nod

GTAV is one of the best open worlds in general, the attention to detail and sense of place is pretty perfect. Probably my pick. Insane to think that it came out 10 years and 2 console generations ago. still holds up now, I'm playing through it again and it's had quite a few updates from MP that have come over to SP.

GTA3, just because it was on a different scale to anything before. Totally blew me away.

Yeah it was epic. It used to be a wild fantasy to be playing GTA in full 3D, and suddenly it was real and it was even better than you imagined. A dream come true.

I want to give Mad Max a mention, as a game I enjoyed more than it probably deserved. Just thought it nailed the atmosphere of a mad max wasteland and then let you tool about in it at high speed, causing explosions.

Spiderman on PS4 leaps out as the one I’ve had most fun with in recent years. Its the only one I’ve ever 100%ed and it was a brilliant fit for the character.
Skyrim for richness and how much time I spent with it on 360.
Vice City on PC is probably the first I spent hours in as a sandbox as well as just playing the game. I’d enjoyed gta3 but it wasn’t alive like Vice City was.
After that I’m thinking of ones where I either enjoyed the game or the open world but not necessarily that the two together made a great open world game.

The ones that come to mind easily are mostly these three:
- Far Cry 2 for its strong atmosphere and how well the systems function. It may be a bit thin, but what is there is mostly great. Also, I think it would be better to call it lean rather than thin. No menus, no pop-ups, only a few animals and the possibility to just disappear into the wilderness when I feel like it.
- Subnautica for the exploration, discovery, atmosphere and base-building. Aside from the fact that there isn't really much competition in the area of underwater open worlds. Soma is great in terms of underwater atmosphere, but it's obviously not an open world.
- STALKER - Shadow of Chernobyl; again, for the atmosphere, but also for the AI systems and the detailed and differing behaviour of the various mutants. Though I'm slightly cheating as most of my time with it has been with Complete-mod and my own little balance-mod. It has been quite a while that I have played Vanilla.

ToomuchFluffyHave you tried Stalker:GAMMA? I got into it a few months back and it's very good. I'm really itching for stalker 2.

I don’t like them. Obviously Elden Ring yeah but I like it in spite of the open world, not because of it
Not played a GTA since IV, which I did finish, although Vice City is by far the best GTA ever and the one I spent the longest time playing. Never been a massive Zelda fan - only finished Link to the Past, Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass

Found it really hard to get on with GTA V. I mean it’s not supposed to be good taste but the standard of writing was fucking bollocks.

Probably Kamurocho in Yakuza 0. Maybe it doesn't really count as an open world? But I love it, it's a small space but so, sooooo rich with detail. You feel like you really know every nook and alley of that place.

Far Cry 2, GTA Vice City, GTA V, Skyrim, Elden Ring. In no particular order.
Loathed BotW, it felt so sparse and the weapon thing annoyed the everliving fuck out of me.
Edit: does an MMO fit in here? If so, Aion takes the cake.

From what I have seen of it it seems like too much fiddling around with the equipment. That kind of realism just doesn't interest me. And I still haven't even tried Lost Alpha.

Rimworld Factorio Transport fever 2 American Truck Simulator
Mario 64 Terraria Civilisations 2 Outcast Vampire Survivors Burnout Paradise

Vice City for me, very little has come close to that in terms of open world games imo.
I'd give honourable mentions to The Saboteur and the recent Spider-Man game.

I loved vice city at the time but I imagine it's pretty rubbish to play now. Hopefully gta6 captures what it did at the time.

Same goes for a lot of games. Elden Ring broke the genre for me and Ubi map spam feels archaic now. Spider-Man already felt a bit long in the tooth but I played GoT after Elden Ring and it felt pretty tortuous at times.

That said, Fenyx Rising was pretty fun thanks to the map spam being mini-games and not ‘follow the trail to the evidence’ and ‘clear out the base’ 800 times.

I don't think I've played any GTA games since Vice City, so I'm wondering why lots of people like it more than the newer ones? I loved it, but I can't compare it to later ones.
As I mentioned, I haven't played many newer OpPen World games, but the thing I loved about Morrowind, other than the unique setting, was that there was always something interesting to find, mess with, put on someone's head, etc.. You never quite knew what you were going to encounter next, but there'd definitely be something. Or you could make your own fun with whatever you found.
The worlds of Assassin's Creed and Mirror's Edge Catalyst felt very dull and empty by comparison. There were key points like merchants, stables, etc.. but they just served gameplay functions. The map is full of icons, but they're basically all the same 5 things repeated.

Spider-Man already felt a bit long in the tooth but I played GoT after Elden Ring and it felt pretty tortuous at times. Yeah. Basically this. Elden Ring showed that players will explore your world if you give them reason to, and not because they are chasing icons. That's why all my list were realtively icon free games. You're not exploring Ubi's worlds, you're checklist clearing. Same for GoT. I ended up getting really stressed out towards the end as I still had fox dens to find, haikus to get, a few sub missions to do etc. I wasn't exploring (which is a shame, as Tsushima island is legit gorgeous), I was just ticking things off.

I'm still very fond of Pirates! Does that count? I loved being able to sail around and land on so many different coasts (which were not different at all to be honest). A GTA Caribbean if you will. Nothing by today's standards but amazing at the time. One of my top 10 games of all times.

You should play BOTW - sounds right up your street and did the things you love about open worlds five years before Elden Ring. Probably won't have the same impact after playing Elden Ring and combat is nowhere near the same quality but the exploring/systems are unmatched imo. Edit - wunty

My boy has BotW on his Switch and he loves it but it really doesn't appeal if I'm being honest. I don't go for that graphical style of game and I'm not a Zelda fan either.

Fired up Valheim again last night with friends. Now that's an incredible open world, albeit slightly different spirit to ones OP listed.

I find it has the opposite effect for me. If Im faced with '3/184 fart jars found', I will find as many as the story needs me to and never look for another one. Big numbers for mundane tasks is an instant 'nope'.
