There are so many great open world games now and whilst I played through breath of the wild again I was wondering which is my favourite of all time. I feel in terms of gameplay then it's got to be breath of the wild. I feel most of the great open world games actually have pretty janky gameplay but are elevated by a great map, story, graphics etc. One of my favourites is rdr2 but I can't deny it's often a bit of a battle to get the character to do what I want. There's just something about Zelda. Even the visuals, although very sparse, have more beauty to it than most other open worlds. I mean just off the top of my head we have Breath of the wild The Witcher 3 Red dead 2 (I didn't enjoy 1 all that much) Elden ring Cyberpunk GTA 3,4,5 etc Skyrim Ghost of t. (Can't remember how it's spelt)
Fallout 3, new Vegas & 4 Kingdom come That's maybe my favourites roughly in that order. I'm sure there's a few I'd like to mention that I've forgotten but I don't feel any Unisoft one I'd even consider great let alone put it in consideration like any of the above. Looking through my list most of them have pretty janky combat and player movement.

Aside from several of the ones you've mentioned, Death Stranding would be up there for me.

I'm not sure. Sure there have been open world games I've enjoyed very much, but I think I enjoyed them in spite of the open world, not because of it.
That said, I do love me a good Elder Scrolls, especially Morrowind... but even that is probably a thing of the past.

I don't think I've played an open world game in ages. I tried Mirror's Edge Catalyst and Assassin's Creed 2 and wasn't that impressed. MEC in particular I felt like the open world was actually a detriment.
So I guess Morrowind wins by default. (and also since I spent a year playing it. even with its shitty combat)
I also have a big soft spot for GTA Vice City.
Breath of the Wild, Witcher 3 and Horizon ZD are the ones that I'd like to try though.

Hmmmm. Not sure. Open world games are statistically games that I never finish and I don't think I'm a huge fan of them. Elden Ring would be all too obvious, and I loved RDR2 as well. Those two possibly. Then again Death Stranding and Days Gone were another two I finished and loved. Actually there's loads more when I think about it.
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. My ideal Open World games aren't ones filled with clutter, but that prompt you to organically explore because the world itself is just so damn intruiging and so well realised. It's a world that you want to push on and see what's around the corner. Not because an icon marker tells you to, but because you want to.
Right. Top 5 in no particular order:
Death Stranding Elden Ring Red Dead Redemption 2 Ghostwire Tokyo DayZ
All five had worlds that I just wanted to explore for the sake of exploring and was so happy to spend time in.

That's another reason why I love botw so much. There's no clutter and you just naturally explore the world. Elden ring was also good at this and it's one of the many reasons I can't play a Unisoft open world game anymore as they are so dull and made as if they were designed using a guide book on things you need to put in a game for them to sell well and end up being meh.

There's a case for arguing some games have better 'open worlds', but are less enjoyable games. Red Dead 2, for example has a stunning map, and yet its one of the slowest and clunkiest games I've ever played.

Probably Skyrim for me. Said it before but it got right the sweet spot between quick accessibility and depth of systems - at least for my own tastes.
Close contenders include:
Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 had some great storytelling in and a solid sense of world.
MGSV had amazing gameplay, and was a true sandbox in that most of the time there was no "correct" way to approach enemy camps.
GTAV is one of the best open worlds in general, the attention to detail and sense of place is pretty perfect.

Breath of the Wild by a considerable distance.
Elden Ring, Witcher 3 and Dragon's Dogma are some way behind but better than the rest.

Easy: Dragon’s Dogma
I’ve completed it 3 times, twice on PS3 (including the Dark Arisen stuff) and once on Switch.
It is objectively janky in many respects, but just seems to hit a perfect balance of fun combat (with each of melee, ranged and magic builds feeling distinctive and equally fun - with hybrids even better), lots of loot to gather and hats to wear and a delightfully bonkers story and cast of characters. I know the open world pretty well after all those runs, but it still has the capacity to surprise me and every fight feels tense and satisfying to win.
But most of all, I just love the Pawn system - building, upgrading and kitting out my own companion and sending her (it’s always a her) off to fight battles in other players’ worlds. And of course using other Pawns in return to form my party of four.
Oh, and a special nod to the song that played over the opening credits of the original release. Brilliant.

The Long Dark - just love how the world is rendered graphically/stylistically
Elden Ring - so many Whoah! moments. This may have been the first game to make me do that after reading about it ever since we emerged from the sewers in Oblivion.
Far Cry 2 - dunno if this is for the world itself or more for the gameplay
Fallout 3 - I loved this when it came out but I don't know if I'd like it today as my tastes have changed a lot
Oblivion - this was the first major* RPG I played after 20 years of not gaming, so it was huge.
*so I hadn't gamed for 20 or 25 years, and I'd remembered reading about these amazing RPG games in the old magazines - the Ultima games and that. Got my shiny new Xbox360 and the first RPG I bought to try out happened to be.. Two Worlds.....which with my 20-year gap I thought was absolutely amazing! Like, the best thing ever. So Two Worlds could go on this list, maybe

Another vote for Breath of the Wild as favourite.
2nd place would likely got to Ghost of Tsushima which I adored. Stunning to look at, great progression and spot on combat.
Rockstar normally deliver, and Vice City is probably my favourite, with V a close second. RDR2 was a great world, but like others, at times it was just too clunky which let the game side down.
Honourable mention for Crackdown.

Yeah, Breath of the Wild is still the reigning champion for me. Then you've got Elden Ring and Ghost of Tsushima battling it out for second and third.
Honourable mentions to the Xenoblades and Legends Arceus (which technically aren't seamlessly open-world but would certainly earn a place in the above fracas in terms of enjoyment) as well as AssCreed IV and the Origins/Odyssey/Valhalla trio, that are enjoying the show from somewhere further below.

As I have no access to BotW, I’m trying Immortals Fenyx Rising on the Xbox, which, I’m told, is similar.
Only done a few minutes so far; not sure if it’s going to grab me or not.
Anyway, Fallout 3, Oblivion and Skyrim are among my favourites. Dragon’s Dogma is brilliant. I really enjoyed Kingdoms of Amalur too.

Immortals has some similarities to BotW, but the world itself isn't on a par with it imo.
BotW is probably the most memorable for me. I loved my time with Black Flag and AC Odyssey, but preferred the seamlessness of the latter. Nothing breaks the immersion of an open world game like a loading screen when you enter a new area.
Just Cause 2 was a hoot. For some reason I never bothered with the sequels.

Breath of the Wild is the champ, obvs. Elden Ring as well, although BotW edges in as it has they joy of exploration and discovery, but whatever you discover won’t immediately rip you to shreds.
My other shout out are for GTA: Vice City (still the best GTA), Vice City Stories just because they managed to get a playable version of GTA on a PSP somehow, and Gravity Rush because weeeeeeee!
I’ve got a soft spot for the Infamous games too.
Edit: Forgot Witcher 3. In terms of story that probably wins out.

Just Cause 3 was already a great improvement on the 2nd, but the addition of the jetpack/wingsuit DLC just made the whole world so much more easily traversible and fun.

I came in here to post Just Cause 3. Equipped with a CPU that can actually handle the "goings on" and and SSD to squash the long loads times it's very very good. It gets even better with the DLC packs as well.
Ghost Recon Breakpoint and Wildlands. I prefer breakpoint probably because this was my jumping in point but Wildlands is very good too. The thing that Wildlands got right that breakpoint completely fucked was the mission development. Having some odd dossier board that can be scrolled in all directions was very unintuitive.
BotW was great at the time but it's elevated when you run the wiiu version emulated on pc. I had issues with the weapon burn rate but it was a very cool open world and it looks great in uktrawide

Cheers. Might have to give that another look. I think performance was a bit rubbish back when I briefly tried it, but it'll barely tickle my current machine.

I really wanted to enjoy BOTW but there were a couple of mechanics and things that really irked me, to that point where where it did sour things for me.
The weapon durability was too restrictive. I don't mind the concept of weapons breaking but personally I find the frequency at which they were spent not to my liking.
Climbing in wet weather was also frequently annoying.
And I really missed having the diverse dungeons found in traditional Zelda games. The Trials are good but I got bored of them pretty quickly.
But I know I'm in the minority here, and as I can't really fault it the world it created.

It's very hard to go back to now, but Morrowind. It just completely blew my mind at the time (I hadn't tried Arena or Daggerfall), the scope, the freedom, the pure immersion. It helped that Vvardenfell wasn't a totally generic fantasy setting but had its own weird ecology and fascinating history.

I like the concept but they should last about twice what they do. Also yes the slipping in the rain is so annoying. You can be half way up something and if it starts raining you need somewhere to just wait it out if you can no longer make it to the top.

GTAV is one of the best open worlds in general, the attention to detail and sense of place is pretty perfect. Probably my pick. Insane to think that it came out 10 years and 2 console generations ago.

BOTW didn't do it for me either. Prefer the template of the other Zelda games.
GTA San Andreas is probably my choice.

As an addendum, Xenoblade X is actually fully open-world, unlike the rest of them. It's not quite as good as my top 3, but it's up there.
