Christ. Is Invincible really 20 years old?! University feels like it was yesterday sometimes.

So we got:
Campaign expansion Noob Saibot, Cyrax and Sektor immediately playable with expansion release date Conan, T100 and Ghostface Animalities have returned as a free update
Haven't bought this yet but might wait for an Ultimate editon. Do not like how Noob looks tbh and a bit meh on the guest characters.

Has the internet lost its shit over the gender swapped Cyrax/Sektor yet? I kind of like them.
I reckon I'll jump back in for this. Looks good!

New Khaos Reigns launch trailer. Seems to be a hint that some form of Towers of Time will be returning too:

Not sure anything they add to the game at this point could get me interested in playing it seriously again. Been a fan of MK since it first appeared in my local arcade as a teen with the blood switched off - I had to moan at the operator to enable it which they eventually did. Bought every main game including the latest but its just not that fun anymore. Not sure if its the rushed release, the in your face microtransactions, or the dull single player content (Invasion) but this is the first one to make me wish I never bought it day one.

I don't think it's been fun since MKX, personally speaking. I can definitely see the enshittening hand of WB on it.

As much as I am loathe to admit it... I kind of feel the same. This is the least amount of time I've put into an MK ever. I don't like the invasions mode and I really don't get on with the Kameo stuff. It's a shame as it looks fucking amazing and feels so good to play but I just don't feel this one like I have all the others. Even MK4 had me playing it longer.
I'm going to buy this expansion, because Mortal Kombat, but not full price.

I too recall it from first seeing the first game in the arcade. It was the bowling alley we used to go to and I remember my brother saying something along the lines of "there's no chance you'll get that out on the amiga". I don't even think I was allowed to play it in the arcade. It did eventually come out for the amiga of course and I've loved it since then. The second one also got an amiga release and they did a much better job than the first. Then I got a SNES and got the first two for that, then MK3 when that came out. Had a game gear with MK 1 & 2 as well. Then Dreamcast for MK4 (Gold), then Gamecube for 5 & 6. Armageddon on PS2 (I think) and the 360 had me getting the DC one and the reboot. Then on to PS4 for MKX and so on. My point being... What have they done to my baby! I don't love it as much any more

Ahh man, you never got to experience MK4 on N64 that was something else. I saved up 60 quid for that as a kid, bought it from Dixons who didn't seem to give a shit that a 14yr old was buying an 18 certificate game and was so disappointed by it but kept playing it. I had more fun with that than MK11.
The influence of WB has got greater with the absolute price gouging on EVERYTHING.

Invasions really have been such a let down, sadly. Appreciate they sunk a ton into the story campaign (which was excellent, imo), so also putting out some SP content ala SF6's WT might not have been feasible, but could really do with more modes to play in other than just grinding online.
On the plus side, I surprisingly ended up playing characters I'd not really focused on before (Sindel, Mileena, etc.), so that's been cool. Sektor is also looking good. Still want Sonya back, mind.
Do find myself moving between different games a lot more at the moment: Tekken, SF6, MK1, still a bit of KI from time to time. Looking forward to FF: City of the Wolves next year too.

The last one sucked and was full of predatory monetisation which erased the last bit of goodwill I have for the series. I genuinely eyerolled when I saw the Kameo system as it was so obviously just a Pokemon cash grab. There is also the problem that we are in (another) golden age of fighting games and MK has been completely left behind.

The influence of WB has got greater with the absolute price gouging on EVERYTHING. Yeah, this is the most depressing aspect for me, pretty much across all the big fighting titles at the moment. I've no real issue with the general concept of modest MTXs for cosmetics and skin stuff (provided there's plenty of actually decent stuff to unlock via the main game too), but the prices are fucking obscene. Character passes, too, are just so expensive -- feel like I'm already in a mindset of holding off on the last one until the inevitable sale price when the subsequent one launches, etc. Expansion price for Khaos Reigns was similarly a kick in the stones. Meh.

There is also the problem that we are in (another) golden age of fighting games and MK has been completely left behind. The annoying thing is that MK is the only fighting game series that I've really got on with. Since buying MK1 I tried SF6 and the new Tekken and bounced off them both. I then tried a shit load of other fighting games and can't get on with them either. It's such a shame.
I've not given up on it completely, but I've very much cooled on it.

Meh. It's an interesting one I must say. MK gouging is one thing then I see Tekken pricing costumes that were available for free in earlier games and it feels grim. Sf6 is also massively guilty of it. Regarding character passes that's a tough one as since they were introduced by Killer Instinct it's completely changed the industry but some of the pricing has been predatory because they rely on you feeling FOMO for not having your favourite character. For example how are main series characters like Eddy Gordo, Quan Chi and Bison DLC characters?!

Yeah see, they've done it again as well as I'm like "nnnngh I want Noob so I'm going to have to buy it", like Ermac made me buy the last pass as well. Also because I hate having a character selection screen with characters I can't select. So I've got their fucking novelty characters in there, again, because I can't stand NOT having them. Fuck modern gaming

It's also cleverly priced where it ends up being cheaper to buy the pass than individual as you usually get skins chucked in too. I hate it moreso as all the streamers I watch are just given this stuff for free and they don't even comment on the predatory nature of it all. Fwiw I've only one streamer comment on all the pricing, although I think there was pushback against SF6 and the TMNT collaboration that was eye wateringly expensive.

Yeah exactly. I actually bought the first character that released and then thought "fuck it, I'll wait" as I knew it would end up being cheaper getting the pass whenever it went on sale. It did and of course I duly bought it and now have all the characters from the first pass. Only about a week later for them to announce this expansion and another set of characters. The irony of course being that I haven't even fired the fucking thing up since I bought the last one but as I own every MK game (not the spin offs, as they're shite) I know I'm going to get it eventually. Aaaargh.

Sort of ties in with the wider discourse around those recent D4 numbers from Blizzard. Genuinely eye-watering how much money they are taking in from these MTXs. Depressing, really.
It's effectively the price of a full game (on PC, at least). For one class costume? Christ. But enough people are clearly buying them, whether it's your Whales or otherwise.
The insidious and deliberately manipulative approach to premium currency price-setting is another thing that seriously needs scrutiny.

Yeah. It's really bad. Just make a good fucking game and people will buy it. Look at Elden Ring. Love it or hate it you pay one price for the game and one price for a fucking mahoosive DLC. Everything else is in the bloody game. Then I know it's a different kettle of eggs as committing to seasonal content requires more continuous funding. Then again. Is anyone else fucking sick of seasonal content? Again, just make a good fucking game, sell it, then move on and dev the next one. Why does every game have a god forsaken battle pass.

I too am guilty of buying the full deluxe version because FOMO with Omni Man (I love the Invincible saga) and the like but fuck me that was some steep pricing. That's why I regret buying, it was ludicrously high and I barely play the damn thing. I just do not get on with the Kameo system at all - probably because I'm old and my reactions aren't what they used to be so I cannot pull off these insanely long strings to do a standard combo using them. When I have played against the CPU I rarely use the Kameo and play old school. MK always had decent single player stuff since fighting games started adding more than Arcade mode (the 300 fight tower on MK9 was brilliant) and I was looking forward to Invasion as it sounded fun from the offset... how wrong I was. Proper boring grind fest.

I struggle with any fighting game adding DLC characters (happened with Guilty Gear Strive too).
I learn all the match ups and get a good idea of the characters and their strengths/weaknesses at launch before picking a couple of mains and having fun. When DLC characters come out that's out of the window as I'm too tight to pay for them (and learn them) and end up getting stomped by people picking them constantly online - I then drift from the game and go back to it less frequently.
I get why it's done but it's always the beginning of the end for me.
