Played a bit more this morning. Wish I’d not tried the ‘speed’ resolution because I can’t go back now, but it doesn’t look as good.
My early impressions is that for a fan this an easy 11/10 theme park experience of 40K. Anybody that spends any time or money on The Hobby I’d think would really enjoy it, unless they’re on the anti-Ultramarine bandwagon or something.
As a game to play, it’s a bit 7/10 maybe. It feels like a bit of a throwback to the Xbox 360 days. I’ve recently been playing Armored Core and before that Doom 2016 and there’s a notable lack of tightness in controls and experience next to things like that.
An easy buy for me right now but for somebody that isn’t emotionally invested but thinks it looks alright, buy at the 30 quid mark.

Dodging is a sign of the heretic. I only use it to dodge toward a larger group of xenos, obviously.

As a huge fan of the setting since it got its hooks into me in '87, I still very much think it's a 7 (maybe even a 6.5). The game itself isn't really much more advanced than the first one and plays like a 360/PS3 title. There are plenty of "oh, it's an X" and spectacular visuals moments for the fans, but I've decided I'll enjoy it more if I play it in small chunks spread out a bit, rather than trying to binge the whole thing, as the nature of the gameplay wears a bit thin after a couple of hours. For me, it's not the best 40K game - those honours would have to still go to Dawn of War 1 (and probably 2 as well) and Battlefleet Gothic - but it's going to attract a huge number of people to the setting and maybe even the hobby itself, so it should definitely be applauded for that. Also, I have no animosity towards the Ultramarines. One of my armies is Silver Templars, after all. I just think Space Marines are one of the least interesting aspects of the Imperium - let alone 40K as a whole

I anyone here hasn’t played it, I highly recommend Rogue Trader. It is an excellent 40k game.

I need to go back to Rogue Trader. I started playing it at release when it was an absolute buggy mess. Decided to give it time for a patch or two and promptly got distracted by other shinies.
Really enjoyed what I played though.

Is there a decent tactics 40k game?
Necromunda, Battlefleet gothic (1+2), Mordhiem (not 40k but) keep popping up ridiculously cheap in sales on PC, and they all look kinda interesting, but all have very mixed reviews.

The combat in Rogue Trader is like 40k Xcom.

It depends what you're after, really. Please tell me you've played Dawn of War 1 & 2 (and their expansions!) - if not, just stop here!
DO NOT play Dawn of War 3. It's shite. For some reason they decided everyone who loved the first two would much prefer a MOBA style game than an RTS. They were wrong and the backlash absolutely killed the series (and Relic) stone dead.
That Necromunda game is actually a half decent stab at bringing the tabletop to the screen. But then it's also a bit flaky and sort of has a 'budget X-Com' vibe to it. Sadly, the studio is also defunct, so whatever's broke now ain't getting fixed.
Battlesector is turn based and about the closest thing you'll find to actual 40K tabletop on the screen. Except it's also not all that much like it, either. It's not bad though, and they keep adding new factions every so often. For a fee, of course.
Gladius is a Civ-like 4X game with no other victory conditions other than kill everyone else or complete your faction's missions before you lose. It's surprisingly good fun if you like this kind of game, but again, they sting you for a shit-tonne of DLCs if you want the complete experience.
Battlefleet Gothic does a good job of capturing fleet combat. It's real time (though you can slow time to not get overwhelmed giving orders to your ships). The biggest hurdle is the campaign *will* get harder if you fail missions early on, as you need to upgrade your fleet. For this reason, it's probably best to either reload missions or restart the campaign once you've got the hang of it. The first game is set just before Abaddon's 13th Black Crusade and the second game is set just after (once Cadia goes boom). First game is a bit more linear than the second and you can only play the Imperial Fleet, whereas you get multiple Imperium factions in the campaign in the second (and can even play it through in co-op!), but I'd definitely recommend playing them in order as there's an actual story to them that follows a fairly major lore event.
That Mordheim game is pretty good but it's also a bit janky and it's really, really HARD. If you don't get a good few wins and XP in the first games you're as good as fucked. It's a good attempt at recreating Mordheim digitally, though!
I think there's more than this, but I can't recall right now. I'll pop back in if I remember any more worth playing.

Oh, I forgot Mechanicus! Pretty fun 'budget X-Com' with Ad Mech delving into Necron tombs. I actually really like this one and I'm glad it's getting a sequel. The music is amazing.

Chaos Gate is aces. Not sure about the replay value.
Gladius is fun enough but gets boring due to the single win condition so isn't as replayable as civ. Just buy the DLC for the 1 faction you want and it's good.
BFG 1 + 2. The battles are fun. The campaigns are quite thin & repetitive, the 2nd one is better. But also the campaign is really only playing as the Imperials so there's no campaign for playing as the Eldar or what not. I'd say it's above average. Though it crashes on 12th Gen Intel CPUs and above. The fix of which is to set an OpenSSL environment variable, which I basically decided was a fucking stupid thing to do. But make sure that if you do, set it ONLY for that process. As lots of morons basically go around saying to change your OpenSSL implementation system wide.

All you early birds. I’m going to bring that bde on Monday night. Curious to see if the pvp is long term solid although I’m buying it for the co op stuff.

Rainy Saturday night and perfect weather to be ripping the anuses out of some Xeno scum but £60 is a hard ask.
I give myself a couple of hours before I cave.

Feels very ‘10th edition’ in some of the design choices - like wargear. Literally do incentive to take anything but the power sword now I’ve got it.
They missed a trick not having a power fist in this.
If they play their cards right they could definitely do Terminator based DLC. Here’s hoping.
It certainly keeps pulling me back, anyway.

Mordheim is very hard to recommend. It is a very obtuse and unforgiving game. And some of the story missions are beyond frustrating. So it's objectively bad, but I still put 230h into it, mostly because I found the Skaven and Chaos teams charming somehow and wanted them to succeed. Would probably also have played an Undead team, but it's DLC which I don't have, and couldn't be arsed to put even more into the game.
Mechanicus is very good.
Space Wolf is pretty meh.
Gladius is decent, but after 10h I felt like I've seen it all.
Sanctus Reach is supposedly good, but haven't played yet. 60% off atm on GOG.
Chaos Gate I only know the old one, which is very good, but old.

I haven't actually gotten that far in it yet, but one of the Twitch drops was a powerfist skin. Is that only for MP perhaps?

As we know I don’t own it yet but from the preview videos I watched there is 100% a power fist.

Maybe. In the armoury it shows what I think are all the loadout weapons are shown with some showing as locked. But maybe I’m wrong. I need to be more wary of spoilers don’t I sorry.

You can pick a power fist for the assault class in the co-op and pvp modes.

Just watched digital foundry vid and for once the series x comfortably out performances the ps5 with consistent 10fps more in the performance/speed mode. Sounds like both consoles the 30 fps mode is the way to go though.

I did a good hour and a bit in Quality mode, then when I tried ‘Speed’ the camera jack was just too much. Can’t go back now.

Played the half hour or so ‘prequel’ level last night. Finding it quite hard so far! Managed to die once and almost right at the end firing the thing. Can’t get the timings on blocks on the big guys at all.

I’m enjoying it. Quite refreshing to play something that reminds me of the 360/PS3 days and isn’t overly complex soulsbourne etc. I just want to smack things.

If anybody gets frustrated by the Neurothrope then the trick is to pin it’s arm against its chest using your bread bin lid as a shield and then bring your power fist over and drop him. Only joking. The trick is actually to dodge constantly until it does the expanding green wave/forcefield, which ignores cover but for some reason you can forward dodge through. Then wail on it with your melee weapon and make like a Guardsman and retreat before it does a scream attack. You can only beat that attack with distance. Get that distance and THEN use your bolter. But the best way is to focus on melee. Watch out for the horde waves that will try to spoil this for you. Just discovered a new weapon too, the Las Fusil which I was not expecting, and fighting Combat Patrol: Thousand Sons which I was half expecting. I have to say carving through the traitor guardsman with a sword or combat blade really brought home what a brutal horrible thing the crusade must have been. They really have got the scale stuff right.
