It is also ridiculous that no one seems entirely clear as to whether we've had two formation laps, or whether we've had one formation lap and one race lap behind the safety car. Which is it lads?

Onboard from Seb looks fairly similar to yesterday, when it was totally okay for Norris to go steaming up to Eau Rogue.

Well this makes no sense. So Perez can start from the pitlane because the race didn't start, but also the race has to be completed within 3hrs from the original start time (so 6pm local) because the race did start.
They should get rid of the 3hr rule in circumstances like these. How is it fair for the fans to stand around in the rain and then (if) it dries out tell them sorry you're only get a 15min sprint, because reasons.

I'd rather they abandoned it entirely than had a silly sprint race lottery that could mess up the Championship.

How can a rain delayed/possibly cancelled race be such a clusterfuck of confusion? It's a pretty fundamental thing.

The FIA have screwed this up by not ensuring the timing screens accurately communicated what was happening. Its so stupid, there shouldn't be room for confusion on something this fundamental. Also if it's dry for two hours between 6-8pm and bright enough to be safe, they should be able to run a full race distance, as they charged people to come and watch. If they can't then the regs are wrong.

Yeah, they keep saying a race finished yesterday just before sunset so it's a bit mad that some arbitrary rule is going to stop it from getting going if it can. Especially when they can't grab their arse with both hands on other simple regulations around it.
It's as good as done now anyway. Don't see us getting any cars on the track today. Stupid.

Even more baffling is that this has been very probable from as far back as Friday, and there's seemingly been nothing thought of in the way of contingency.

They've now applied force majeure to stop the clock! The right decision but not exactly any less farcical.
When they've got a weather window to start the race, they should just decide the race time/distance based on sunset.

Jesus wept. Stop it with an hour to go then!
That race in Canada was a decade ago and somehow they've managed to make it worse in every possible way.

Apparently the radar suggests the rain is easing at 1730 local and it's light enough until 2000. They should add that hour back on if there's any chance of a full race.

Still…we get an hour of Sky Bantz to get us through to the race.

Jesus wept. Stop it with an hour to go then! That race in Canada was a decade ago and somehow they've managed to make it worse in every possible way. That race was also an absolute classic. As if any fan watched that and wanted the FIA to avoid a repeat. I can see some sense in having a time limit for when they've already gone over 75% race distance before a red flag. At least then everyone's had a decent bit of action and there's been enough laps to be a valid contest. Anything short of that and they should keep waiting till it's too dark.

Would also make sense after this to introduce a rule that championship points are only awarded if there are a minimum number of actual racing laps.
If all laps are behind a safety car then you're basically awarding them for qualifying not racing.

If all laps are behind a safety car then you're basically awarding them for qualifying not racing. Which in this particular case was an achievement all by itself, so not too unfair.

I mean sort of, but it's pretty unsatisfactory if you don't know it'll count for points until after the fact. Teams compromise qualifying setup for the race precisely because 'there are no points for Saturday'.
Half points, same as if they'd actually raced 32 laps is unjustifiable in a sporting sense. It skews things too unfairly.
Williams will suddenly have an almost unassailable Championship advantage over Alfa Romeo as one example.

Well slap me silly I think we might get some laps in. Just to get some points sorted. How very odd it’s been today.

It's a pity they can't just migrate from an SC to a VSC as a halfway house. Then just keep going quicker and quicker to clear the track.

This is shit. Farcical points are going to be awarded and (probably) no real running.

If I'm in thee top ten, I'm going for fastest lap behind the safety car for the extra half point.

Well they've done the most stupid thing possible from a sporting perspective. Idiots.
Now they've started the only sensible option was to keep going. I really hope these points don't end up deciding either title.

Thing is now, there isn't enough time to even hit the threshold for full points so there's really no incentive to carry on anyway. This has been a farce.

Yup. They may as well have spent at least 45mins just lapping and clearing water after they elected to do 2 laps and restart the clock.
They've not done all they can to get actual racing in, they've literally just done enough to be able to say the race wasn't abandoned. Seems very cynical.

Is there any precedent for a 2 lap non competitive race getting championship points?

This one, lol.
We have to be heading towards a fixed set of stewards and more uniform regulations and race direction. It's been really unprofessional all season.

How can anyone win a race if there hasn't actually been a single second of racing? Total farce. This is up there with Indianapolis 2005, arguably worse because at least then 6 cars ran competitively.

Russell's first podium. Wonder how he feels about that. Probably not as he should be, deep down.
