Yeah, the guns don't even feel great to shoot. No real feedback to them.

Borderlands gunplay is nowhere near the best in the genre, Halo, Rainbow 6, Destiny and Cod are miles ahead. Given you missed Doom off, there's not a lot to say about that list. I'm playing and enjoying Halo at the minute but the guns themselves don't feel as good as Borderlands in my opinion. Borderlands has far more heft to it. It's subjective anyway so silly statement

I like how Borderlands guns feel. I like the silly 32x Zoom and acid/fire/ice/electric elemental effects of the various guns too.
But yeah, Doom probably has the best feeling guns IMO from a purely shoot and make demons explode perspective.

The battle rifle and mangler are considerably better than anything in borderlands.
Didn't mention doom as I haven't played it since launch and I hated eternal so it's not in recent enough memory.

Tried plenty enough across all of them to know that they aren't anything special.

Well it doesn't really matter does it. I just like Borderlands. It's a shame there aren't more people here who do as it'd be nice to have people to talk to about it but it's fine. Just play what you like, even if it's boring Call of Duty

Call of Duty feels a lot better than bum ass Battlefield, to be fair.

I honestly wouldn't know about Borderlands as I couldn't take it tone-wise for very long. Characters weren't always annoying, but that's the best I can say about them. The environments were extremely bland and the character system seemed quite simple. Guns seemed relatively interesting, based off of the little I got to see in three hours or so.
Claptrap in the main menu was one of the most annoying, braindead ideas I ever had to deal with in any game.

I think part of the problem for me is that I don't really truck with lolrandom humour anymore. Borderlands hasn't always been *entirely* about that, but it feels like it's been doubling down on it. I guess Tiny Tina was so popular that they decided to make most other characters like her?

Daymare 1998 (free from, GOG). Well that was the fastest abandonment ever. Game's tutorial: "Now you shoot this helpless wounded person, lying on the floor, in the head". Me:'"F*ck off, game!". /uninstalled and forgotten

Although I’d have to say that Destiny has it absolutely nailed with gunplay.

Marathon Infinity
Ok, I think I'm actually dropping this for good. I did abandon Marathon before, but eventually felt more willing to attempt a difficult section again, and finished it. Marathon 2 was much more laid back. But this one? Oh boy. I bet someone complained the previous two games were too easy, and so Bungie said "be careful what you wish for".
Enemies are souped up, and tight corridors with little room to maneuver are more frequent, but the most annoying thing by far is the number of levels where you can run out of oxygen. It was only one level in M1, happened more often in M2 but you also had a lot of oxygen refill stations so it hardly mattered. In Infinity, I'm scrambling to find an oxygen tank almost all the time. Died to asphyxiation way too often already. Oh and guess what, the good old not-autosaving-between-levels is back yet again.
And now I'm stuck in an early level (it's merely level 10 out of 30 or so) with pretty much no oxygen left, no tank in sight, and a bunch of water passageways in front of me. Only thing I could do is reload an older save and try to clear the level faster, but I can't be bothered with that. And I read it gets worse. So... dropped.
Shame because it started so well. The first level reminded me of a survival horror more than a shooter.

Wanted to try out Destiny but it's online only and sounds a bit like hard work from what I've read in passing

Necrovision + Lost Company (Steam)
I really tried with this as a First World War shooter with zombies should be good but this is horrible to play.
From the off: as someone who suffers from headaches the screen seeming to constantly be shaking (whether from artillery or getting hit) is an immediate red flag. There is a rudimentary combo/finishing system (that refills your bullet time) but it's far easier to shoot things as the melee system is awful and the actual animations leave you open to attack. Getting in close to enemies also shows how awful and plastic looking the models look. This is rounded off with the awful voice acting and by God does the main character not shut the fuck up.
I got part of the way through the second level before I'd had enough as it's just an unpleasant game to play.
I did briefly play the sequel to see if there had been any improvement but most of the same issues still seem to be there.

Ghost of Tsushima PS5
Started out very well and I've done the first island. Seems too easy though as I'm nearly maxed out. Looks and sounds amazing. Combat is enjoyable but really bored with the open world tasks.
I've Horizon FW and Half Life Alyx on the go at the moment so it's gonna be shelved for a good while.

It's a pretty weird concoction I admit, but I never had those kinds of problems thankfully. I thought the atmosphere was fairly good throughout, the gunplay ok and the mechanics weird. I never quite understood how some things worked.
And yeah, the choice of main character and his voice lines are just one of many oddly implemented story elements.

FIST (PS5) Bland levels, not great combat and and an absolutely dire stealthy part where they take your gear away from you. Also has an annoying thing where you need to press a button to skip dialogue, but unless you wait long enough it usually skips animations too so its often a confusing mess. Bland voice acting too. I also won a boss fight and then it skipped to a flashback and then threw me in prison for the aforementioned shit section. Clearly didn't trigger a cutscene or something as it made no sense at all.

I swear people on the PS2 subreddit are trolling by recommending this. Absolute shite.

Yeah, I tried it ages ago too. I don’t understand its hype, and I’m a bit of a Mikami fanboy. Maybe the movelist gets more intricate as you continue playing, but it’s so rough and clunky at the start, with some bad early Resident Evil weight and tank controls, and incredibly narrow reach for your attacks, so enemies need to be like RIGHT in your face for your attacks to connect. The world is silly and over the top, but the game itself just doesn’t feel fun to play, IMO.
Madworld on the Wii was a better execution of a very similar game concept, by a lot of the same developers. (Clover did Godhand, Platinum did Madworld.)

I liked God Hand but it was probably one for the hardcore.
Then again, I wouldn't call myself a hardcore beat'em up player, and I never even learned how to actually dodge with the right stick (backflipping was all I could reliably do), and yet I still managed to finish the game on the standard difficulty, so it couldn't have been all *that* difficult.
Soundtrack was amazing tho.

is it worth persevering with Death Stranding if I find the gameplay interesting enough (although it does seem to amount to "hold triggers if weeble wobbles") but find the story interminable bullshit with fifteen minute cutscenes clunkily delivering a stream of exposition for every five minutes of gameplay?

The opening stretch is very story heavy, but when you get to the middle section of the map it opens up a bit and lets you pootle about until you're ready to crack on with the story.
