Game fans talking about the merits of a recently abandoned game on a games forum under the thread 'recently abandoned games'. What should we talk about instead? I mean there's talking about the merits and cons and there's complaining because one version of the game had the main character be exploded out of a ship from a different location than the remake. I'm always up for discussion but some of the stuff on here does border on the ridiculous. I do enjoy it though. Personally I don't think anyone should act the arbiter of what constitutes 'meaningful' discussion. As long as it stays on topic it's valid imo.

Unpopular opinion - I think I don't get on with the DS remake because the original game is actually just average to good, not spectacular. Characters are uninteresting, story is a bit bobbins, the 'lore' is some student-level sci-fi and the enemies get old fast (as does the 'take off their limbs' gimmick). I think we were just starved of a great survival horror game after RE4 and lauded the first decent game to come along. /runs
Ok, I couldn't read this without crying into my hands. I know its just an opinion and I get some of the points, but not others.....
I agree about the characters, they aren't anything special.
When Dead Space came along, it was innovative for the time. Games like RE4 were stuck with terrible control schemes, you couldn't even walk and shoot at the same time. Dead Space changed all that and perfected it. The control scheme for the DS Remake is essentially the same as nothing needed to be changed.
Then there was the lack of HUD and how everything was integrated into the game world. It works amazingly well and is totally immersive. It also makes sense the health bar is on his back, so others around him know the status of his health. He will already know his health status, he doesn't need a green bar to tell him.
The shooting off the limbs doesnt really get old fast. Most games you just shoot things in the head, so it was nice that a game tried something different. The fact you can also shoot off enemy limbs and use them as weapons with telekinesis also added some variety in the combat.
Dead Space deserves a lot more credit than it gets.
The original game WAS spectacular. It redefined our expectations of horror games.
I appreciate other peoples views though and its interesting to hear what others think, even if I disagree with them.

And there was a little bit more to it than it simply being a change

Anyway Dead Space and its remake is great even though it does shit the bed near the end, Dead Space 2 is great too, somewhat too long and does suffer from the same flaw as the original where it shits the bed near the end and Dead Space 3 abandons a lot of what made the previous games special but that is very much down to publisher interference.

How does that trajectory make any sense? He flies out of the cockpit sideways due to an explosion from the back of the ship. Watching it back, it's because they added a new character (pilot) and didn't want him to leg it out of the door and abandon her. Like I said, they made an unnecessary change and didn't resolve it in a way that isn't fucking weird

Disagree a fair bit - Dead Space wasn't innovative, it was just an incredibly polished experience that stood on the shoulders of games that came before it. It didn't "change all that" from RE4 - it took most of its' stuff from that game and refined it. Visceral are even on record saying they borrowed ideas/mechanics from RE4 and it was their biggest inspiration.
There's numerous examples of games where you could move and shoot at the same time, had no HUD etc. It didn't innovate anything unless you're talking about doing it within the narrow setting of survival horror.
Regarding the limbs - you said it didn't get old fast, I said it did. Matter of taste really - don't think there's a right answer.
It really didn't redefine anything. It's a very well executed homage of RE4 in an Alien/Event Horizon/Solaris setting.

I don't know what to say I wasn't looking at it that deeply enough. It was just an addition to make a scene a bit more cinematic. I don't know what else to say.

In saying that certain things being discussed are ridiculous I'd argue you (indirectly) are. But yeah, semantics and all that. I'd rather not stretch this out anyway as I need to prep for richyroo's next post as he's about to blow a gasket regarding my Dead Space criticisms!

Disagree but sure, I'm not going to fall out over it.
Also you're the guy who gave Dead Space 7/10 aren't you?!

Yeah, I'm not trying to ruin anyone's enjoyment or appreciation of the remake, unlike Reg with the original. These are simply my opinions. I'm happy for anyone to enjoy whatever they like
And I did genuinely appreciate richy pointing out that they were unmanned vehicles during that scene in DS3 because it's something that bothered me that doesn't now
That's the beauty of discussion

I liked the original! I just don't think it stands with other greats of the genre like RE1, RE4 or Silent Hill 2.

Would it make further difference if I said the vehicles were manned? By cats?

I wouldn't say it's even competing with RE1 or SH2. Neither is RE4. Both that and DS are firmly in the action horror genre. I don't think DS is on a level with those games, but I love the setting and everything

Fucking loads of them for various reasons, here are 2 for very different reasons.
Saints row, got it free from epic ages ago, was still too expensive. Possibly the worst audio on a game I've ever played too.
Baltaro, absolutely wonderful game, completed on the hardest difficulty which is the target I set for myself and won with every deck. One of my favourite games for a while.

Frog It sounds as though you completed Balatro, as opposed to abandoning it! Nice work, either way - I'm looking forward to picking up the physical edition in September.

I'm not sure, there is a lot more to do there but I set myself a goal and reached it. There are still loads of challenges and the likes to work through.
It's so good though, you will have a great time with it.

Yeah, it's not a game I could ever see myself completing 100%. Just get as much enjoyment out of it as you can and then walk away.

That's pretty much how I've approached all the roguelikes I've played so far - completed runs with all four characters in Slay the Spire, escaped 11 times in Hades, and so on. I'm not the type to 100% the vast majority of games, and you have to draw a line somewhere!
