All the parts for my PC are now ordered, and the first arrived today. Proper excited about getting everything and putting it all together now. Q: What do people do for virus protection now, is it still primarily Norton and McAffee or are there better options? No idea, but I'm guessing not those. Windows Defender or whatever it's called now is built in and probably ok (or at least it was a while back).

Yeah, defender is definitely preferable to Norton or McAfee home versions.

Use a good browser with an adblocker addon with whatever else.

This has probably been asked before in the thread: but where would people recommend purchasing Windows 10 keys from?
I realise that buying directly from MS is the 'correct' way, but Win 10 is not available for purchase from them anymore and even sites like Scan and the like don't sell them. So I need a trusted website that can get me a legit Win 10 Pro license.

Probably worth looking at 11 at this stage, 10 will be dead in the water in a year and a half. Rip the plaster off now, it's not that bad with a few customisations.
It's a bit sketchy, but I've never had issues with grey key resellers.

I can always upgrade later and I probably will but for now I need it to be Windows 10 atm. Which are the 'better' grey key sellers? Note that as long as they are reliable and sell genuine keys then they can be more expensive than other more dodgy sellers.

The free version of Avira is perfectly good, in the past it has gotten rid of a Trojan for me that Norton and Kaspersky couldn't do anything about, doesn't come with all manner of bloatware and is not a system resource hog.
Also, the IObit software is a good 'un to get. Advanced System Care, Uninstaller, Driver Booster and Malware Fighter will all look after your system perfectly well at the freeware level.

Two of the guys at work have decided to ditch consoles and build PCs for the first time, so I gave them the following golden rules to follow:
• Thou shalt not buy a Seagate hard drive, for those who increaseth savings increaseth sorrow when they inevitably fucking fail.
• Thou shalt make absolutely damn sure you peel the plastic off the underside of your cooler before you attach it to your CPU, and thou shalt ask our mate Lee the reason for this and groan when he tells you his story of regret.
• Thou shalt not skimp on a PSU, and check first whether GamersNexus have tested your chosen one to the point where it caught fire. • Thou shalt not take the piss when it comes to cable management, for those who have to go back into the case later to try and locate a problem will surely bemoan themselves.
• Thou shalt check, double check and triple check the direction of your fans. And then do it again.
• Thou shalt read your MOBO manual thoroughly and determine which of your SATA ports is the one that just has to be different from all the others.

Seagate make decent SSDs in fairness. Totally different kettle of fish to their HDD game.
Hell, I'd say just avoid sata completely for a new build.

Good quality M2 drives are so cheap now that I don't think anyone needs to look at anything else. £100 will get you a 2TB drive. You can even easily get a good 4TB for less than £200 now.

I feel like it’s much easier to put old ssd’s in a new pc, I never accumulated drives like this when they were bulky spinning platters. Currently have two M.2’s in there and three Sata SSD’s. They’re all hidden out of sight too, so no impeding of airflow which is another reason I never bothered before.

If it's a new build tho no reason not to just go for an M2. Or two.
Also, on cable management: my cables are all over the place and that's the way I like it. Fight me.
(In any case GPU is so fucking big doing absolutely anything would involve having to take that bastard out, so cables are barely factoring in the maintainance convenience stakes)

Made me go check prices. A little more expensive here as always, but much cheaper than I thought. I still have two old spinny ones and the single 1TB SSD demands more and more juggling as games balloon in size. Would totally be worth replacing the mechanical drives.

I have a 500GB NVMe and a 1TB SSD. No problems with space so far, but i don't play many AAA games, so there's that. You'd think the faster one would be noticeably better, but I haven't actually seen any real difference.
The laptop on the other hand, only has a 500GB NVMe, and I'm constantly running out of free space. I'm considering adding another drive like that, since I use it quite a bit and the internet here sucks... would be about 45 euro, which is not much at all. Maybe next month? I just bought a new monitor for the Series S...

I like doing cable management, just makes things easier in the long run. Well except the gpu, that has that octopus cable sticking out the side.

Have everything I need to build, except a cpu cooler. Was supposed to be delivered today, just got a message it's been moved to Monday. Fucks sake.

So, I ended up ordering an RTX 4070 Super at a (very) slight discount last night. The 4060ti looked like too much of a stopgap with very questionable legs even for the near future. A 4070 just looked like a safer buy and should still be reasonably competent even if I get a new screen and move up to 1440, which is a possibility. And then once I'd settled on getting a 4070, a Super popped up that was only ~40£ more expensive. Why not treat myself for a change?
Also a 2TB M.2 drive to have some more space that's actually usable. Will probably throw out one of my two mechanical drives as I'm nowhere close to needing 11TB in total. The other one can stay as a dumping ground for random junk.
Should arrive in a day or two and I'm actually a little excited to have some new toys to play with.

I built my very first PC today. It was waaaay easier than I expected and, other than having to reseat the RAM (because I didn’t realise the bottoms hadn’t clicked into place), it worked on first boot! I don’t know why I thought I would have more issues than there were but it was simple, just slow.

Ooh custom cabling and everything. For what it’s worth, I made the exact same mistake with my ram in my last build.

Nice bit of business Derbs, well done. Bonus points for not having rainbow unicorn lighting all over it Ta. I despise the rainbow shit that 12 year olds and streamers have. I was originally just going for a full mesh case and no RGB but I like 'em when they're clean inside, and because it was my first go at it I wanted to see if I could do something tidy. I may look into getting a mesh side panel second hand down the line, just for options. It's does have some unicorn lighting on boot but the Artic Freezer 3 is pretty subdued - it's more pastel than neon and actually doesn't look awful. I purposely avoided RGB RAM to try to keep it a bit more "understated" - as far as unnecessary lighting within a PC goes, at least.
