Istrolid: Constructing space ships and commanding fleets in top-down. Seems like a simplified version of Reassembly, so I'd rather recommend the latter, but of course, that one is not free.

Murder by Numbers and The Elder Scrolls Online are free on Epic this week.
I have no idea if The Elder Scrolls online is usually free or paid. If you do grab it, note that there are loads of different 'dlc's of coins that you can also grab for free. Again, I have no idea if those are useful.
Homeworld Collection Remastered is next week, which is nice!! (and something else that I've forgotten)

Epic just kindly refunded me for my Elder Scrolls Coins purchases. Which I think is a nice way of saying that they took back all the coins that they gave me for free. So I assume that was a cock up on their part.

I had a look yesterday and all the coin packs had different monetary values. I didn't see any free packs, so probably a boo-boo at their end.

Homeworld Remastered Collection is now free on Epic, which seems like one worth grabbing.
Also free is Severed Steel, which is a repeat and looks decent as a single player bullet time wall running stylish FPS.
Next week is Blons (repeat I think) and Loop Hero

I doubt I will get to it, but really should try Homeworld Remastered. Loved the original, even if I never got very far with it. Remember getting screwed a bit by the way resources and units carried through the campaign (plus generally not being very good at it).

Never played 2, but I loved 1. It is one of the few RTS I actually got into. Usually I just bounce off them.
I heard remastered makes it harder to screw yourself in the campaign, as it auto-collects any remaining resources at the end of a level.
If you do play it again, you need to (a) make sure it is collecting all the remaining resources at the end of levels, and (b) use the ships that can capture enemy ships as much as possible, so you can build up a big fleet of captured ships.
I think. It has been a long while.

Yeah same, never liked RTSs but Homeworld just clicked for me. I snapped it up a few days ago, looking forward to replying it.

It's weird that the RTS for non-RTS people is the one with full 3-dimensional movement.

Well, this is... definitely a game that exists. I suggest giving it a go. Just because.

Quake 4 is free for Prime subscribers (as a GOG key). Very convenient, what with the Quake 2 remaster just coming out. I wonder if someday they will get to this too.

Black Book is now free on Epic. I think I heard good things about it. Dodo Peak too, which I know nothing about but it looks like a relatively simple fun retro arcade game.
Homeworld - Deserts of Kharak is free next week! which is great, as I've been on the fence about that one for ages. (as mentioned above, i tend to bounce off RTSes, but homeworld is an exception)

Definitely, great sense of style, nice atmosphere and music, good story presentation specifically. The RTS mechanics, unit movement and the AI just work as they are supposed to. Really not much to complain about.

I watched the trailer on EGS before bagging this and it reminded me of a game I played years ago called ground control

Erinsborough High, Interior:
"Hey Toady do you want to come round and play 'Hero of the Kingdom II' on my Sinta MegaDo after school?"
I have no idea if it's any good but that's the most generic video game title I've ever heard.

Kings Bounty may be a bit old now, though it won't matter too much for this kind of game, but it's a good lite strategy timewaster. It's a bit grindy after a while, but it was a great low energy game to play when I had no sleep and was holding a sleeping baby in one hand. Though it was never quite as great as it sounded in Alec's writing about the game. www.rockpapershotgun.com/kings-bounty-retrospectiveHelium Rain has also gone permanently free on GOG (and steam I think). Looks like a decent space sim. Cave Story+ is also free on Epic, though I think that's a repeat.

Helium rain seems like a really good game but didn't sell much. The author says he only sold total of 15k copies for this and astra shipwright, unfinished game. He is closing his business as he moved on. It's great that he releases the games for free and making them open source. It is sad cause it seems it was his dream but couldn't pay the bills with it.

I wonder what is a reasonable expectation for that kind of game. 15k seems pretty good to me. Though of course a fair few of those might be from bundles or deeply discounted sales.

Depends on how long it took to make, how many people worked on it and the average cost of those 15k copies sold. If you are a solo dev, only spent a year making it and you averaged £10 a copy, that would be £150k. Deduct the 30% the store takes and that would be £105k. There would be a few other costs involved, for purchased assets and tools, but that still seems like a very health wage and could spend a year or two making your next game off the back of that.
Looking at screenshots of Helium Rain though (which I don't know anything about), it looks a lot more complicated than something that was made in a year by one person. I can't imagine only 15k copies sold would be sustainable for something like that.

Yeah, I don't know how sustainable it would be, but it seems like a reasonable amount of sales for a small game. So I feel like maybe expectations were unrealistic.
Best of luck to him anyway.

which sounds like mainly a 2 man team.
