I don’t really know where to write this but I need to get it out somewhere. Someone from a parenting group I’m part of on facebook has been murdered and I’m not at all sure how to grieve someone I didn’t know beyond his daily memes and contributions to questions about car seats etc. There’s a gofundme and seeing people making two and three hundred pound donations has set me off a bit. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-gloucestershire-58811821

Yeah that's terrible, was it somebody he knew or just a random? I always think about the kids in these situations, how do they ever process it and get over it..

That's bloody awful. I've started writing a few things about the senselessness of it and the family, but it all just seems like words.

Just a random really. It was a spin off from a larger group to separate out the kid chat but really I wouldn’t know him anymore than any of you other than facebook putting a face and name to him.
He was only just asking about best brands of kinetic sand the other day. Totally mundane shit to entertain the kids.

The BBC is reporting it wasn't him that was stabbed.
Edit : They have changed it now to him getting stabbed multiple times.

In a church too. Double hell it’s not much of a church tbh, more of a function hall. It is very close to a pub nicknamed “throat cutters” though lol

So grim, no idea what he was like as an MP but none of them deserve this. At least the attacker has been caught and can’t hurt anyone else for what little that is worth.

Isn't it funny how even nonreligious people find churches sacred I find most of them creepy, particularly the gothic cathedrals. (Some Catholic Churches in Rome were certainly pretty though but I still did not find them in anyway inviting). Only religious buildings I have found peaceful are Hindu temples.

(Some Catholic Churches in Rome were certainly pretty though but I still did not find them in anyway inviting). Only religious buildings I have found peaceful are Hindu temples. My point really was how conditioned we all are to respect religious values even if we're not religious. If you're not religious, a church is just a building but see Danno's comment earlier, as if the stabbing was worse because it was done in a church. I have no idea if Danno is religious, but I can imagine a lot of people feeling that way
If you read a story about a random person being killed and one about a priest, which would you find most shocking?
I've heard people say that they'd make religion disappear if they could and it'd make the world a better place, but it's so ingrained into society at such a deep level that everyone is affected by it whether they believe it in it or not. The world would be unrecognisable without it

I like and respect old buildings. A lot of churches tend to be old buildings. That's probably why they have a somewhat grudging sense of respect even from atheists.
But some modern church that's basically a converted village hall built after 1900? That's just a building, it didn't become sacred because someone wrote church on it.

+1 I love the architecture of old buildings. The attention to detail and the history.

Main thing I've learned is - black cab taxi drivers can lock people *in*? Surely that's prone to abuse Yep. Red light indicates doors are secured. Arctic Monkeys did a whole song about it.
