That spineless, cretinous cunt Ted Cruz - senator for Texas, lest we forget - couldn't *wait* to come out against gun control laws yesterday, while lunatics like Marjorie Taylor Greene blame anything *but* guns and babble on about the need to return to medieval superstitions as a way of solving 21st century problems.
Nineteen kids and two adults dead.
Business as usual, I guess!
Fucking horrifying.

27 school shootings in the US so far this year. We're in week 21.

Quick maths says we have 1 gun death per 1.8 million people. If we low ball that an average mass shooting kills 2 people in the US, based on those numbers, that's between 20-22 per week. That's over 1,000 people per year. Or, simply, a 9/11 every 3 years. I believe well over a million people have died to COVID in America due to inaction. I think life, well BORN life, means fuck all to America.

Maybe if they rename mass shootings as 'late term abortions' they would do something about it.

I've actually seen someone on FB seriously suggest the solution is to sue school officials for failing to prevent the shooting. Mind you, our government wanted to make teachers criminally liable for failing to spot radicalisation so I guess we're not that different.

Well you can sue an absolute stranger for having an abortion so it checks out.

Seriously must be getting to the point where schools are locked down like maternity Wards. Locked doors and "sterile" areas.
The sad fact is guns won't go away so more needs to be done to safeguard the kids. If I lived in America there is no way I would be sending my kids to school. No matter how small the odds.

There could be a massacre a week till the end of the year and nothing would get done.

How many people die in mass shootings per year? The Wikipedia articles on US gun deaths and mass shootings are pretty comprehensive.
The figures for Mass Shooting (Not the number of people who died in them)
US Mass Shootings
1982 - 2011 = 1 every 200 days.
2011 - 2014 = 1 every 64 days.
2019 = 417
2020 = 611 2021 = 693 (10 per week)
So far 2022 = 198 (11 per week) and counting (current death toll: 290)
The definition on what constitutes a mass shooting is not fixed though.
Remember, those are mass shootings.
By comparison there were 33 gun deaths in England and Wales in 2021
It's way over one a week already

Saw a comment somewhere saying "America would rather try to stop schools than stop school shootings" and it's sad how accurate that is...

Has there ever been any study on why gun shootings have become so much more common lately in the USA? I know they are all nuts over there, but things have got massively worse in the last ten years.
Was it just Sandy Hook making the idea popular, or the economic downturn, or social network right-wing recommendations getting all the nutjobs out of the woods? Or are there simply too many reasons to count?

The polarisation is bonkers - as with much of society these days - and then they have easy access to weapons of easy mass murder as a catalyst. I imagine it's somewhat easier, mentally, to pull and hold a trigger than use a blade, not to mention easier to keep your distance from people picking up the nearest half brick, traffic cone or fallen branch to stop you.

Trump has announced heโs still going to speak at the NRA convention, and put the word massacre in quote marks when mentioning the shooting.

The freedom to shoot children is what makes America great. Theyโre just being true patriots.

I really don't know, it feels like a bit of racism, a dash of toxic masculinity, some misogyny thrown in and a pinch of being bullied and not having the social or communication skills or emotional intelligence to address their issues in a constructive manner and when they get a gun they're the one with the power.

That's powerful and saddening, tbh.
