I had a quick blast before bed last night. It's very good but I'm not sure if it's the kind of thing that will hold my attention. Love the art style and soundtrack though, and yes, it's incredibly satisfying to play. I'll give it a bit.

From what I hear it takes a few runs until you realise just how good it is.

From playing on PC... I'd say you should try to unlock a few of the different weapons. I made the mistake of just sticking with the sword for too long - it's probably the most boring way to play. The bow will feel rancid at first, but there are some fantastic builds with it.
Stuck around 55 hours into it on PC. Very good, though perhaps not the Jesus-game it was hyped as by some reviews.

I might give it a go. I loved it for about 15 hours on switch but got bored immediately after I beat final boss the first time as by that point I was sick to death of the first three world's. Will be nice to have it on the big screen as on the switch lite some of the beautiful art wasn't easy to make out.

Hype and expectation is a funny thing. I'm hoping I don't feel like is this it?

Played this a lot on Switch but never finished it. I absolutely fucking hated the voice acting for some reason and the irritation just drove me to playing other games, eventually.
Might pick it back up at some point, but I know the second someone starts talking I'm gonna be up for smashing shit up lol

Hype and expectation is a funny thing. I'm hoping I don't feel like is this it? You probably will for a while. It took me 10 hours or so to click with it. I then had 40 hours of really, really liking it, before feeling I'd seen the bulk of what it had to offer. The game only really starts after your first successful run.

My expectations are pretty tempered anyway given that I'm normally pretty cool on these type of games anyway. Combat feels really nice though so I can definitely see me getting a good few hours out of it.

Aye I'll give it a bit and see if it clicks. There's enough there to interest me so far anyway.

Is the combat akin to Diablo?

Is the combat akin to Diablo? Yes and no. There are some obvious similarities, with the perspective and the overall pace of combat. But there's a much, much bigger emphasis here on keeping the damage you take to an absolute minimum - replenishing it is much harder than in Diablo. It's also heavily based around a 4-button system - attack, special, magic, dodge - which feels quite different from Diablo. Plus it's far more optimised for controller play. Even on PC, I wouldn't use mouse/kb.

Decided to give if a whirl again. Played it on PC and finished it a few times before drifting away from it.
I'm utterly shit at it now and I've forgotten which rooms to go for/avoid. Ended up turning God mode on (which isn't as bad as it sounds)

Yeah, this is pretty great. Tight controls and it looks and sounds fantastic. I've never really liked roguelikes but I realise I do like a very specifc kind of roguelike. Pretty much this, Dead cells and Children of Morta.

Pretty much this, Dead cells and Children of Morta. It's generally not much more than 30 mins even for a full, successful run. That puts it for me in about the right place for a roguelike. It's also very much roguelite more than roguelike - you can carry over a hell of a lot between runs.

The gameplay is pretty tight in this, but I can see myself getting thoroughly fed up with restarting it constantly not too far down the line.

Had another go there and I'm surprised how quickly I'm smitten with it. Absolutely love the combat.
And yeah I used to feel the same about starting from the beginning again with stuff but Returnal has managed to get me to change my mindset with these things and see progress in a different way.

Random generation does nothing to keep the early areas feel 'fresh'. At least repeating fixed levels in games means you can learn/perfect them which is more fun for me. I can replay games like Mega Man, etc over and over without getting bored but burn out pretty quick with rogue likes
Still go back to Hades now and then but can't main these games like some people seem to

It's definitely getting its claws back into me... You can have very "meh" runs where you don't really give a shit if you fail, then on another run you get a couple of boons that just click and all you want to do is find the next pom of power to get them levelled up as high as you can.
In the middle of a bow run with Dionysus' special DOT boon that's making for a fun playstyle.

It's excellent, I've probably played about 3-4 hours so far, haven't made it all the way through the second area yet but can beat the first boss pretty much each time (unless I've had a shitty run with no health refills before I meet her).
Some of the upgrade decisions are tricky - do I upgrade death defiance again or earn a 100 more whatever it's called and go for stubborn defiance?
